The HIGHLIGHTS' forum is wonderful for reading some great and inspiring hunting details. Also, there are individual harvest threads on PowWow which I very much enjoy reading
Thought it would be advantageous to have a collective single thread of 2021/2022 fall/winter harvests. In addition to pics, there would
be listed the following:
-Bow and actual draw wt at archers draw length
-Arrow specs including BH
- Shot distance and approximate recovery distance
- Date and approximate time of day
Hopefully, I too, will be able to contribute to this thread.
-
Yes great stuff Scott....... We used to have a thread every year called daily hunt stories and pics...
This will do.... :campfire:
-
One expectation this season was to have my tracking pup reliable and well trained. She has performed quite well during her training session which started at 9 weeks old. She will be one year old in October. She both quickly and successfully recovered both deer on Saturday and Sunday.
She stayed amped hours after the track and had to be in the UTV with the carcass. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Good stuff scott. Trying to get my dog Leroy intrested in tracking. It's there but I lack in ability. My feeble attempts at dragging deer liver hasn't gone very well. Leroy will just run to whomever is holding the drag. If I'm doing it solo, he gets distracted and frustrated too easily. When I back up and only do a 5 foot drag, I feel like it's too boring for him. Granted hes not what some would consider a sporting breed but I have to think it's there. I just need to figure out how to encourage it

Hello Charlie….
Have been fortunate to have K9 Recovery as part of our group. They have at least two world class dogs. Hank was featured in North American Whitetail last September. Their services command hi fees and have always covered us as a gratuity. I very much dislike taking advantage of their services and wanted deer tracking dog of my own. Note: Hank is a supersized aggressive bloodhound. Following his lead is far tougher than I would believe most would have imagined. An energetic beagle seems to easily satisfy me.
The guidance I received was to train them to track injury pheromone. So I cut several hides up into 12” squares and put them in individual zip lock bags and froze them….take one hide and thaw in the fridge….use one hide for approximately two weeks and then discard it…
Drag the hide on a telescoping pole…at 7 months she had advanced to tracking over 800 yards…Note: she is oblivious to who holding on to the 50’ leash.
I didn’t seek further guidance since she was so determined and successful.
There are some great resources available that would provide competent information as I my knowledge wouldn’t feel a thimble.
***I do not know how to rotate the pic

There’s a reason dogs are bred the way they are. You say it’s not a sporting breed, even if so the blood it carries might not be sporting. The desire, brains, biddabiliy, nose, etc may not be there and you could have mediocre results at best. Just FYI, not all dogs are created equal

This is a great idea. Hopefully I'll be able to post my first Trad kill soon. Working on a new set of arrows currently and then I'll be in the woods.
-
Looking forward to it.
-
Good idea, should be informative 👍🏻. Heading west next week, hopefully have some results!
-
Scott, glad to hear Sissy is having some success. Hopefully she’ll be helping with recovering a trophy of your own soon!
-
Unfortunately if a person misses a day or two on here some of the kill posts can get lost in a long thread like this. I like to see the kills made by other members and think they deserve an attaboy for them because this is doing it the harder way.
-
This thread is in no way intended to eliminate nor discourage individual thread success stories. Those individual harvest success threads are cherished.
Its purpose is merely to bundle the success pics with hunting setups in one central thread.
Much can be gained and appreciated by having the compiled list of accomplishments of the Trad Gang members.

Here is one I shot 8/23/2021 hunting at Whitefish Lodge, Wawa, Ontario. I was using a Black Widow PLX, 47#@ 28", drawing 28". Arrows were GT traditional XT's, 600 spine, cut to 29". Broad head was 125 grn Woodsman, with 35 grn screw in adapter. I shot the bear slightly quartering away, and I thought the hit might have been a little too far back. After an autopsy I found the arrow had penetrated the bears heart. The shot was about 12 yards, and the bear went about 40 yards after the shot. It was quite warm the evening of the shot, so we gutted the bear in the field and didn't get a chance to weigh the whole bear. It was a nice, mature boar. I hunted 2 days, and saw 16 bears! It was a great hunt. I shot the bear at about7:00 P.M.

My smallest yet proudest buck. Shot him up in the mountain. 50# 7lakes longbow. Gold tip traditional 400 with 100grain insert and 200grain vpa single bevel. Shot about 15 yards, went 40 and tipped over. Its the size of the hunt and the smile on my wife and kids faces when I bring home backstraps!

Two deer in 4 days. First one I couldn’t find her that night, so I went look the next morning and found her in the creek. She went probably 175 yards.
Deer #2 ran 60 yards up a hill and started blowing at me. I thought that isn’t good :dunno: found a good blood trail and she went another 40 yards from where I last heard her.
I was using the Selfbow I just built about 3 months ago. A pretty good feeling taking deer with a bow you built from a tree you cut yourself! :bigsmyl:

Boated into an area last night to avoid having to walk through thick field edges and bean fields. Rained most of the time but the deer were moving!
Filled another antlerless tag.
This one was taken with a Bear Polar Longbow, cedar shafts and Bear Razor head broadhead.

Tim, it was my 3rd day sitting in the blind in the background. I use a full bodied doe decoy when their rutting. At about 10:15 this guy came in following a doe and fawn, He came in angling to my right and I hit him at about 15 yards. I was shooting a Toelke whip 53@29 and a Zwicky delta 2 blade, it went through the left shoulder and came out in the belly.. He went about 50 yards and went down.

Nice killin men! I love this time of year.

A couple weeks ago I was fortunate enough to get this cow moose while hunting with a close dear friend. We each had one of our kids in camp for this hunt which was the best part of the hunt. Unfortunately neither of those guys were around when we had packing to do, so the old guys had to get it done.

I was blessed to take this young doe in North Carolina last week with my faithful Black Widow MA. I found an oak ridge that was raining acorns and set up near the best sign. Soon after climbing the tree this doe showed up. I made a decent shot through the back of both lungs and she ran down to the bottom and piled up just out of sight. Three young bucks came through about 30 minutes later. Two of them stood in the exact spot that the doe had been in when I shot her. If they had been a little bigger I might have tried to double up. After dark, I got down and found a very bloody arrow and a good blood trail that I quickly followed to my prize. I need to get back to taking better field photos, but this is what I got.
-
Congrats to both Greg and Gregg!!!!!

Well, I got very lucky this evening! I sat in the blind behind my house. Had a really nice buck that I’ve had lots of pics of come in along with several other deer. Somehow, I flubbed a 12yd shot and hit him way forward and low from where I was aiming (you can see the entrance hole in the pics). I got out of the blind and found the arrow covered in blood, and what appeared to be a really easy blood trail. Because the hit was questionable, I backed out, went to the house and made/ate supper.
About an hour later I started the tracking job in the dark. The trail was very easy to follow, but to me it looked more like a muscle hit than chest cavity blood trail. I kept moving slowly. I got to a fence about 100yds out. When I turned down the fence shining my light, I could see him in the corner about 100yds away……………..still alive and walking.
I immediately shut off the light, and stood there for a few minutes trying to figure out what to do next. I decided to back out and wait longer. I also decided that he must have been hurting pretty bad, or else he would have jumped that fence and run off to who knows where!
After another hour, I went back to where I last saw him. The blood trail followed the fence and turned in the corner to keep following it. I found where it appeared he laid down a little ways after the turn, but he was not still there, and I couldn’t figure out where he went when he got up from that bed.
At this point, I was thinking I had lost him for good. I didn’t give up quite yet though. I went back to the fence before the corner I saw him turn at to the blood I had been following when I first saw him. This got pretty confusing, as I had thought he had walked all the way down the fence to the corner. That was not the case. The blood trail turned off into the brush before the corner. I followed it on out to the fence after the corner. And was totally confused at that point because it looked like 2 different trails crossing each other.
Again, I went back up to the first fence to reevaluate things. I was standing there and shined my headlamp around and BAM, there he was. Ended up being only about 30yds from that fence corner.
As I said above, I got real lucky. He was facing left when I shot. I missed left and low, hitting him in the front leg. Somehow the arrow went up into his neck. And in doing so, cut something lethal!
Anyway, I was very relieved to get my hands on him!!!! He’s a mainframe 8 with an extra point on his left G2, so 9pts total. He is a narrow, yet very tall rack buck. His 2’s and 3’s are pretty exceptional. If his brows were long like the rest, he’d be about perfect!
Here’s a few pics of him:

Nice going Bisch, and nice buck. Did you take your Sarrels out this time?
I had some elbow tendinitis issues a while back, so had to go down in draw weight some. The only lighter bow I owned was this Sarrels Blueridge longbow that Bob made for me several years ago when I hurt my neck. It is 44#@29”. I’ve about got over the tendinitis, but was shooting this bow well, so stayed with it. I’m sending in my Primal Tech recurve to have it taken down to 45@29.

Season opened last weekend but I was fortunate to go hunt a friends place with a group of great folks. I got to our place last night but skipped the evening sit and stayed at the ranch house, shot my bow and drank a couple of beers. This morning I dropped off everyone at their stands, drove back to where I park and walked the last quarter mile to the stand. I spooked a bunch of deer bedded around my stand (in a big white oak currently dropping acorns) and I was muttering under my breath and climed in about 45 minutes before sunrise. Fortunately they weren't too spooked and wandered back in, feeding all around me as day break and dawn rolled through.
Soon this guy came in and I kept passing opportunities to shoot him as it's still pretty hot here and I hate cleaning them inbthe heat. After 20bor 25 minutes though he came around to my left at 13 yards and I couldn't resist. I drew and came up the offside leg, picked a spot and released. I could see both ends of the arrow sticking out as he left and knew he'd be down quick. The blood trail however left something to be desired but he only went 60 to 70 yards. Still not a single bevel fan.
First buck I've killed on our ranch in the 5 years we've owned it.
-
Took this 10 last night with my new Northern Mist Superior and home made cedar arrows and a wicked sharp Zwickey Eskimo. Sorry for crappy pics. I was alone and it was very warm so was in a hurry to get him out.

Don't worry about the heat just gut them and take them back and put a 20# bag of ice inside the cavity and skin them laying on their side one side a time. I live in GA, and most of the deer I kill are during bow season. Hunt to 10:30 in the morning and go back at 5 after a 90-95 degree day. Bow season runs from 2nd Saturday in September thought the 1 week in October. I've been dealing with the heat since I started bow hunting at 16.

We have a chest freezer we quarter them and the freeze them. But with a three month season opportunities on doe happen fairly often. So waiting is usually okay. Mature buck on the other hand don't give us lots of opportunities.

I totally agree Bisch, it is what it was when you shot it. Waiting for it to dry and shrink is not representative of the buck on the hoof. I never understood it, it makes no sense.

Nice one Magilla!!
Good shootin!
Tim B
-
Nope, that’s a southern Ohio national forest buck
-
Guess I should add to this. This was back on September 11.
Stillwater Aberdeen, 57@29. GT Trad arrow with a 200 grain 3 blade VPA broadhead. Arrow weight around 525 grains.
I believe I've found my new favorite wild game meat. I think it has better flavor and is more tender than venison

Many many fine accomplishments shared...thank you and congrats!!!

October 5th… One Dad in a hurry to go get his deer “helpers” so pretty bad pics! Lol

I hadn’t looked at this thread in a while, lots of nice critters have been taken. Congratulations everybody, thanks for sharing.
-
Way to get the family involved John. Good job!
-
Since they were in diapers I’ve always included them when there happens to be an unlucky whitetail. I grew up this way so I always go get them to help Dad “find” his deer and then they help with what comes after. Making good memories!
-
Congrats Magilla and Trenton G!!!!! Awesome harvests to all you guys!
-
Great stuff guys!!!
-
Was able to get a small boar just before dark last night. Which works out well as my priest will be home soon and has pointed out his freezer is empty.

Excellent Gary...my priest still has 100#s of BBQ mutton and pork in the freezer...i have a reprieve right now...
-
Got a real big doe this evening! 108# live weight is BIG for around here. The shot was a little higher than I wanted, but still put a big 1.5” hole thru both lungs. She went about 80-90yds. My dog Zeke made quick work of finding her. I shot her with my Primal Tech longbow, 46@29.
Bisch
-
Good shooting Bisch.

Congrats Bisch. That's a big doe! Looks like you are getting along just fine with the new limbs.

Great work Bisch and Tim...
-
Awesome animals everybody! Congrats!
Tim, that's a good one. Figured it was just a matter of time before you knocked a buck down. I was up in your neck of the woods this past weekend at our farm, but I sure didn't find anything like that.
-
The great pics continue. Thanks, guys. Every time I look here it seems there is another picture of Bisch with a new kill. The other day, a Texan was complaining about how hard it is to find hunting land there. No problem, because at the rate Bisch is going, all the deer in Texas will soon be gone. Continued good luck to all you guys.

I had a rare opportunity Saturday. I had planned to take the whole first ten days of November off work to hunt.....but then my own work schedule started really getting busy, and my wife's company decided she needed to be in NY that week (and we have three children)......so my hand was forced a bit; I knew I was going to miss hunting during peak rut. The rutting action here has REALLY picked up this week and things were pretty hot Saturday. I had several different bucks answer my grunt calls throughout the day. About an hour before sunset, these two buck simultaneously answered my grunts and came in at the same time. Two arrows later, my season was over. It's a little bittersweet because I know I won't be hunting the peak rut, but I had a unique chance and the freezer is full now. The larger buck was the second one I arrowed, after he had gored the other buck after it died, much like a tom turkey will peck or spur a dead rival. One more grunt brought the second buck right to me. Shots were 24 yards and 7 yards. Both fell under 50 yards from my tree. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Congratulations On two great Bucks
-
Dag gum!!!! Congrats!! 2 good bucks at once!! Lol. Crazy
-
I got the taxidermist to remove the lower jaw from the buck I killed so I could get an idea of his age. I was guessing him 4 1/2 on the hoof before I shot him. Did I ever get a good surprise!!!! He was 6+, maybe 7-8. It’s hard to be real exact once the teeth get as worn as these were. I’m tickled pink to know he was so mature!

I’m only posting this here as Supreme Leader and Captain of F. R. O. G because I don’t want people to believe that Cory Bailey kills the biggest does in the woods.
Although he just might? But no one ever brags on the smallest, :dunno:

Congrats on your doe John!

Good shooting John. Everyone knows the smaller ones are harder to hit.👍

Went back to my buddies place to try to get a doe this afternoon. Didn’t see a single whitetail because the pigs have totally taken over this setup. My buddy hates the pigs and wants them all gone. I ended up shooting a big sow, a big boar, and a little pip squeak sow in about a 45 minute span. I don’t know what happened on both the big pigs???? On both, the arrow hit a little higher than I had intended, but should have still been good. Somehow (glance off bone, pig rolled hard, idk???) both arrows went thru the pigs at a pretty severe uphill angle and the exit holes were waaaaay too high. There was zero blood to folllow on either of them, and I never found either pig or either areow! :banghead:
After I shot the big ones, a couple little ones came back in. This little guy finally got right just at last light and I pegged him. Complete passthru and didn’t go 10yds!
