Title: Fur silencers?
Post by: B4NZ41 on April 29, 2008, 10:21:00 PM
I realize that cat whiskers work just fine for what they do, but making your own fur silencers is much classier.
My first attempt was to chop a couple of 1" by 3" strips off an old rabbit pelt, and tie them to the string with dental floss. They exploded the first time I dropped the string. (it was actually kind of cool).
But anyways, If I decide to try again in the future, I'd like to have an idea of what I'm doing.
Do any of you make your own fur silencers? I'd be interested in seein some pics, and learning how you attach em.
Thanks.  :D

Thin strips inserted through the string(after it has ben untwisted a few turns) and then wrapped. Insert other end, twist it up, and you should be good to go. Im not sure about measurements for home made, but Im sure someone will come along and know.

1/4" by three inches should do the trick, those are the same dimensions commerically cut fur silencers are...

the prettiest ones I've ever used came from a red fox, and they lasted a good long while too, but I think the best come from mink or beaver. the natural oils make them last a little bit longer and they withstand moisture better too

I make mine out of beaver, about the dimensions that baretraks mentions.  I tried some made out of rabbit, but they didn't last at all and shed way too much.  I thought I'd try some skunk that I have, just for kicks.

Unwind the string, insert one end, wrap it around the string, unwind the string a bit, insert the other end, scrunch the ends together.  Repeat on the other end.  Watch this video from Three Rivers Archery on youtube   Three Rivers Archery string silencer installation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5a6hzqarKk)   .

I made some of coyote fur last week.  They seem to be working well but I have not taken it out for any serious hunting purposes yet.

Soft downy fur won't cut it. It mats in the damp. Otherwise, there would be a few fewer feral cats in my neighborhood.

Good info, thanks.   :D

It looks like I was going about attaching em all wrong. No wonder they blew up.

made some outta a red fox that looked cool too.   I wife has a friend that has llama's and I've been trying to get my hads on some fur for a while  (ofcourse it would have to be sans hide...may get it a bit of trouble for that:))
