Title: Character Billet HedgeHunter
Post by: smag on August 02, 2021, 10:30:45 AM
Here's a 66" 48@28" Osage character bow. Limbs are 1" wide at fades. Wood was two pieces of left over billet split-outs left on ground after splitting a snakey osage tree awhile back. Not sure if was do-able but it worked purty well. Pretty much new going in the bow was going to want to bend in handle and pop the riser off. Took care of with a tennon on edge grain in the handle, really stiffened it up. Shoots really well with a 550-600grn arrow.
Tips came out of an old Bear Polare that my friend had that had exploded. Was an I Beam riser so I took some Rosewood out of it and it was really figured stuff. Enjoy. . .

Nice bow   Those were some nice cast offs!
Any reason you are short drawing with your bow arm bent?

Scottie!

If i remember correct? You have an old skewl HedgeHunter 50@27” Superhedge??

Camera timer took shit while i was still drawing prolly. Can tell because arrow is not even back. Dont my left arm goes straight. Take home prize from BiG OD Green.😝

Lotta stuff going on with a bow thats only 1” wide with a glue on handle. Hand carved a slot in bow and handle. Then, insert a edge grain tennon. The tennon is only about 1/16” beside sight window. Looks just like a billet bow but hecka lot more you dont see. Shoots right where you point it.

No not at all. You build selfbows much? If anything this one is stiff on outer third but thats how i prefer them.

Selfbow building not like glass bow building. Done plenty of that too. Building selfbows you really learn what and how to build bows and what makes perform. Tillering is about non existent with glass. Get yer lam stack recipe, glue it up and maybe have to sand belly glass a touch to get it to gall into the tiller you we looking for.

I thought i knew how to build bows when i built lots of glass bows. Not at all really.

Does look that way. Be interesting to see an actual full draw pic ;)

My full draw is 32. Thats 26-27”there. If it was bending in fade it would pop that glue on riser grip right off. This character bow is only 1” at fade. Dont take much Hedge to make a good shootin bow. Heard that somewhere before?!

Maybe angle of pic. Remeber wood does not tiller its self like glass.
