Title: Here's a wild story with great pics at the end
Post by: Terry Green on July 25, 2021, 11:03:40 PM
So, David Shepard, Don Wilson, Curt Cabrera and I were in David's Excursion to pic up the last man in our group Michael Langahans at the end of our morning hunt.

Michael started telling us about a big boar hog he'd shot, and he though it was a little too far back, so we all bailed including David's dog.  We found blood right away in the high broom straw field and it ran along side a down hill cedar break on the right. I was in front and I soon found out I was alone as I heard David and his dog both barking as his dog had got a whiff.  No one was in site, they had all bailed off into the break. I ran back to the ruckus and started down hill. I saw David holding his dog back standing along side of Micheal to the right of me.  I could not figure out what was going on as I couldn't see any sign of a hog anywhere down hill from where Michael and David were looking.

Now Don Wilson was straight down hill from me 5 yards, and Curt was 5 yards down from Don. Both of them were looking in the same destination as Michael and David but from a 90 degree angle, and I was the corner of that angle. Michael and Curt both had an arrow nocked, but I still saw nothing and heard nothing, except David's dog yapping profusely. I had no clue what was going on.

Next thing I know Michael is drawing his bow, at what I still don't know.  Michael comes to full draw and releases, and the next thing I hear is the sound of what sounded like an arrow burying into a telephone poll.  I mean it was loud and ringing an echo through the cedar break.  All I could figure as the echo was settling down is that Michael had shot one of the big cedars in the break. It was deathly quiet as the echo subsided, no rustle no tussle, no nothing. Just dead silence for about 4 seconds.  I see movement below me and now Curt was drawing his bow, and I am still completely clueless as to what is going on.
Well, Curt released and it sounded like he shot a big, not so ripe, pumpkin, then I heard something and then saw something..... A big boar headed straight for Curt.

At that moment Don runs pasted me pretty quick, and I felt the wind off of Curt as he flew by me as well. Curt had gathered some steam and was carrying the mail out of that break, and there I was all by me lonesome with the boar still coming.  So I stood my ground and released when he was about 4 yards away.(as usual on game, I didn't remember drawing the bow)  The Zwickey 4 blade went in between the jawbone and the shoulder.... as you hog hunters know, there isn't much of a neck on big boars, and not much of a target when they are charging you.  The Zwickey went into the spinal column and the boar instantly started this bizarre trembling and shaking like it was being electrocuted as it fell over dead as a hammer.

Now I want you to look at the pics above closely, as thankfully Don did snap this pic from a safe location and we got to zoom in enough for this one part of the event.  You can see the reflection of the sun in the boar's eye, but look above it and see if you can find another little dot.....

Now before I end this I need to do a Tribute to the late Chris Surtees. Chris was a big time Tradgang member. He was always sharing any tips, help, or info he could.  He hunted with us on some of our group hunts including Solana Ranch where this story took place.

His Dad Larry had given me Chris's favorite bow, a Quick Stick, that I took on this trip with me to try and down an animal. Well, I did, not one but two charging hogs that hunt with the same crew in tow.... but that's another story.  I was really thankful to take a part of Chris with me.

Ok, back to the dot..... that is the bottom of the post from an aluminum adapter. HE was the telephone poll. And here is a testimony of a 3 blade.....

GOOD TIMES !! That's some fine shooting !
I shot one 2 weeks ago in almost the same place but missed the spine. Didn't find it until the next morning.

That was a good memory to have and share.   And a cool skull to have as well.  A great shot at the time you needed it!

That pig was dead but didn’t know it. Then agian I wonder if it could have survived? We have all seen pictures of critters killed with either bullets or broadheads already in them. Personally I would have preferred a .44 Mag at 4 yards.

Thanks Guys, I edited out the Wensel Woodsman because that is what I though it was, then when I saw the pics posted I wasn't so sure.  So, I text Michael and he said it was a VPA.

M60gunner, nah, he was gut shot twice by Michael and Curt. He would have died.

rastman, yes, LOTS of mojo.

smag, about 4 yards, maybe 5.

GCook, yeah, it was a wild hunt, two days before this one I did the same thing but in the dark, well almost.  Michael was holding a flash light for me and David was holding the light for Curt as he was the one that shot it.  Curt and I were around a really thick opening and he had his position to try and get a shot. I was at the only other feasible escape route, and the boar took his chances with me.  Same shot placement, same side, but this boar rared up like bronco on its hind legs squealing something awful. Again with Chris's bow, when it fell over, Michael ran it just before it dies and stabbed it's heart with one of Chris's knife he had one in the St Jude Auction.  Great Stuff right there.

Been wanting to try hog hunting, but I think I’d either mess my pants or get addicted to experiences like that. Maybe I should just stick to deer and small game?

Good shot Terry.

I've got a Hog skull out in the shop with a 2 blade broadhead a friend of mine made (he's a tool and die man). I shot the hog when he charged me with a 90# longbow. It hit him just a little left of center in the forehead and he dropped like a stone.

I've got a picture somewhere.

Hmmm.....?? Gee Ron,

I would think an old "pig sticker" man, such as yourself, would have a more exciting story...??  :dunno:

Hell if I know. He fell off the planet. Never had a cross word with him.   He seems to have  abandoned Tradgang and our friendship.  Won't call won't answer text....  so, i don't have a clue.

Cool story. Chris is missed. I wonder how many thousands of critters have been spared. We certainly have lost out on some great adventures
