I am curious to know if I am the only person who cares about buying a bow with another persons name on it. I have bought bows through the years used and some have had names on them and I just never could get used to it. Am I just a butt or does this affect anyone besides me? I notice many people selling a bow will not mention this info (about name) until you ask. Just curious to see if I have a mutated gene or something....
I won't pay as much for a bow if it has someone else's name on it. I have only ordered a couple new bows, but specify no person's name on it. I have had the bows name on it, but no person. I also discount for any religious sayings. Nothing against those who want psalm references, just not on a bow I would buy.
I believe you are normal in the fact that you dislike another person's name on the bow. However, I am not superstitious in believing that removal of a name from a bow ruins the "mojo".
I've got 5 Bighorns that don't have my name on them. Some of them I shoot better at times than the one with my name. :jumper:
I tried to remove a name from a Widow I had and it really messed the clear glass up, thats when I said never again, I guess that surely affected the Mojo LOL!! If I am looking for a particular bow and I see there is a name on it I just pass..
There are some names I wouldn't mind having on a bow I bought. I have never put mine on one, though. If I had a bow, and we had been through a lot together, I might put an inscription on it, but wouldn't do it to an untested weapon. Haven't done that yet either, though I have pet names for certain guns. Named some arrows. Does that count?
I was so sad when Squiggy died. He is now my brace height checker.
Killdeer :archer:
If it bothers ya buy a little deerhead sticker or another small sticker and put it over it. Why try and remove it and possibly wreck the finish. I have put "Mountain Dew" on a few and my name on only one that I know of, maybe two. Shawn
i got names on my bows little wolf, gray wolf, wolf spirit. as you may guess i have a thing about wolves. :D
I sometimes have my name put on a custom bow built for me, always with the intent of keeping it forever, of course. Doesn't always turn out that way. I don't mind if someone else's name is on a bow I'm considering purchasing. I've never found a name that was difficult to remove. A little very fine sandpaper and/or rottenstone and a quick spray or two of finish, and it's good to go, sans name.
Not a issue to me. I buy a LOT of used bows and some stay and some go. Most bows I'm gettin em 50 cent on the dollar as to new, so I ain't complaining too much. If I think it is going to stay, gives me a reason to get to know the bowyer a bit more...

I had my name on one bow. My first and I'd buy it back if I knew where it was. I quit after that because I realized this ain't a marriage. I have bought some with names but prefer that they don't. It won't kill a deal though. I'm with Killdeer though, there are some names I'd like on a bow.
I have regularly removed names from bows and changed the weight/draw markings as in when a bow is marked at a different draw length than my 28" draw. Any bow with the satin finish are easy to do. Glossy finishes are a little more difficult to match but do-able. I start w/ 400 grit black oxide paper,(wet), and sand through the top coat. As you start to remove the lettering back off to 600 grit and feather the edges of the area you're sanding. You can re-mark the bow if you choose to with a gel-pen or rapidograph( technical pen) in .02 size available at art supply stores. Satin finishes can be matched with common spray satin poly. The more glossy finishes with wipe-on poly.
It turns out very "factory". If I didn't tell you the name was removed, you wouldn't notice.
I dont worry too much about it. All my widows have names on them and none of them are my name.
Having someone else's name on a bow doesn't matter to me in the least. As long as it doesn't affect the way it shoots--no big deal
Well, if you're buying a bow with someone else's name on it  , you could try and negotiate the price down :D , due to someone else's mojo  on the bow. :saywhat:
My Black Widow TFV Ironwood has the name "Honey Bunny" on it! I kinda think it's cool. Was a gift from my wife. So There! :p
... mike ...
I did an inscription on one (the one in my signature), and had my initials put on another. The one with my initials was "the first of its kind", and I felt it had to go on it to keep it identifiable as such ('cause its all about ego!).
Seeing that I usually can't buy one "off the shelf", inscriptions/names aren't usually a problem. Though if I was given a choice between two identical ones except one had a name on it, I wouldn't go for the name, unless it was a "collectible".
Then again, having some other name on it could be fun at a shoot.... could get that person in a lot of trouble...... :)
I have one bow that I bought used that has somebody elses name on it. It doesn't affect how the bow shoots so I am not to worried about it. I have no problems with people knowing I bought the bow used.
not a big deal...
The way I look at is that whatever name is on a bow it is part of its history.
It doesn't matter much to me either way.
I do have a bow with Fred Bear's name on it. I guess he felt the need to sign it. I hope it didn't hurt the value of it! :bigsmyl:
You can always change your name to match the one on the bow. Social security numbers are another story.
The Pronghorn 3-pc. 'Green Machine' longbow I shoot best has another's name on it, and apparently had at least two other owners in between before I got a hold of it. I doubt anyone else will own it before I die.
I traded straight up for a 1-pc. Pronghorn (wanted a take-down for trips and a lighter weight) with my name on it, and originally thought I might not like the fact that I traded away a perfectly good bow with my name on it for one that didn't have it. Has not made one bit of difference to me...
I got my name on my first custom bow, because I was all excited and figured I'd never get rid of it. I don't order them with names any more knowing I might have a harder time selling down the road. Hasn't been an issue though, because I find it very hard to part with most my bows, I just keep buying. I don't mind buying a used bow with a name on it, since I'm usually getting a nice custom bow for almost 50% of new sometimes.

I put names on some of my bows...my favorite bow is "Trusty". There is "Buff Bow" and "Mini-Trusty" as well. The bows do have to earn their name and I have several on the rack that have not done so as of yet. I'm not sure how the next owners will feel about the names on them but I'll be dead then so I don't really give it too much thought! I've only sold one bow and I still regret it. I've decided to be a "collector" instead.
Have to agree with TexMex. Its part of the bows history. It is especially nice if you know the person whose name is on the bow. If you respect him or her, that is even better. I have a bow that was built for Todd Pendleton. He is a fellow TradGanger with a good reputation on this site. I've never met him, but I'm proud to shoot a bow with his name on it. :bigsmyl:
As a bowyer the choice is up to the customer, it is on my order form.... but I don't put my name on my shooters... I do think that for 75% of the shooters out there, they'd prefer not to have another's name on the bow.

WOW ! I was under the impression if you named your bow and it was on the bottom limb and not the top limb it was 5 fps faster :biglaugh:
I think I have been duped !!!

It doesnt matter to me one bit!...I've even got a few girlfriends with somebody elses name on them.....doesnt bother me either!
If you have a bow made by Fred Anderson, he gave it a name.
I have two, named bows by him.
I've had a number of bows with other peoples names on them, and it doesn't bother be at all. When I pick one up to go hunting I just think to myself "come on Mark, (or Fred, or Alex, or Tim), let's go huntin"!" It helps give the bow a little personality.
The first custom bow I had made for me had my name on it. Sold it in a moment of weakness, and then a year or two later bought it back for more than I sold it for. It had passed through a couple different owners in between, and I sure was glad nobody removed my name.
I must say this thread has been very enlightening, no kidding, has made me think a little different about the whole thought of a name on a bow, not to mention very entertaining...
I have bows with other folks names on them, and some with my own. Two I have named myself: "Thanksgiving" and "Showtime".
A good hunting buddy passed away about 4 years ago. I have one of his bows with his name on it. It brings back memories to take it hunting every once in awhile.
I held off for a little while just to read the posts..this is a great thread. There are lots of ways to remove the names.I think Black Widow sells a small sticker that will cover the X-owners name on Widows great idea..You can also take some 600 grit wet dry sand paper and sand it off as there is normaly a couple layers of finish on the bow and then the lettering and then a couple layers of finish over the lettering. So if you don't sand through the bottom layers of finish you should be fine......however with that said...I would like to add,I've shot several different bows over the years with the name Bear on them.....any idea who he is ??? great thread.Just shoot em,the name wo'nt affect the proformance at all............bowdoc
I have a question? Is it normal for a bow to come with your name on it? The reason I ask is because I ordered a custom bow a few months ago, and when it arrived yesterday the bowyer wrote "Custom made for....." I hate the way it looks, and did not request it? Is this normal?
I purchased a custom bow years back and the bowyer did not ask, but it came with my name on it, I too did not like like it as no one calls me David yet bigger than life there it was, a name I only hear when someone is mad at me. LOL!!
I like the Bowyers name on my bows. When I bought my first custom from Bighorn back in 1988 G. Fred ask me if I wanted my name on it and I told him no but I would love it if he would do me the honor of signing it and he did. That bow is special and I think it would be to someone else if I sold it, which I won't.

I think adding a name to a bow just adds a little more "spirit" to the bow. I know that when I think of my sticks and strings and call them by a nickname it just seems a little more spritual. Then again maybe its just me ;)
WOW!?!? Selling stickers exclusivly to cover previous owners names? Them there spider boys got just about every angle covered...
JL
does'nt bother me at all, I am not the kind of person to worry about the details, if it shoots well and I can hit with it that's all that matters, my main focus is hunting with a bow. If I started to take some nice animals with a certain bow and it became "special" to me I may think of getting my name put on it.
Its just some letters. Who really cares. Actually, one way to look at it... think of all the mojo you got when you got that bow at a whole lot less price than whoever's name is on it.
See... good luck already. Like Shawn said.. put a sticker on it.
ChuckC
I just picked up a used bow that has the original owners name on it. I took interest in this thread the other week and was considering placing a sticker over the name.
Today I decided to see if I could track down the original owner. I Googled the name and found someone with the same name on another forum. I joined the forum and PM'd him to see if it had been his. He said it was and we have a great phone conversation.
I won't be covering up the name of a new friend.
I have a bow with "Denny Sturgis, Sr." name on it, being from Michigan it makes the bow more valuable to me than if was name-less...
heartshot
I've only got a few bows and one with someone elses name on it. No problems w/ it whatsoever. I figure once I pay for it, its mine. Besides, the handwriting is too little for me to read w/out my glasses and I don't need glasses to shoot. Actually would like to meet the guy I bought it from some day!

I had the same thought when I got Ben Graham, of Hummingbird Bows to make me a longbow.
He asked me if I wanted my name on the bow.
I told him no, but make sure that he signed his name on it.
I still have two arrows that his wife, Linda crested and signed for me. :archer:
Well usally the first thing a person asks is(DID YOU BUY THE BOW NEW???)And the great thing is to say YES AND IT HAS MY NAME ON IT!!!!!YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR BUYING!!!!!
You know that that was the last guy to put his name on it since the last time the bow was refinished. I saw a bow autographed by Fred Bear ten years after he died - I guess that makes it a Supernatural Kodiak.
Here is a thought... Why not add your name and then the dates you owned it. Then when it is passed on or purchased elsewhere the buyer will know the history and maybe add their name and dates. Kinda like the Little Delta Bow, people have an idea of its lineage.

I had my middle name put on the last one I ordered, most folks call me by my middle name Arron. Somehow or another my new bow has "custom built for "Arrow" on it! Oh well, I like it all the same!
Mine doesn't have my name, but instead had the bowyer put on it...
"When Pigs Fly"
I really dont like the Black Widow stickers. I would rather have the name in plain sight. Less gaudy.
How about just your initials then you cam make something up to go with it. MCG Master Collector of Gutpiles :bigsmyl:
This post is interesting, Butt it is actualy 2 post in one....
Do you like your Name on the bow...
Do you name your bow and put it on the Bow...
My Saxon was my first Custom bow, it has my Name on it....

My Sentman Razorback has neither on it....
