Title: Arrow spine ?
Post by: mike g on May 12, 2021, 12:55:59 PM
    Okay, Need a little advice.
I have not pulled my bow in years....
    My current Hill bow, Is a 66" 45@ 29"
Arrows cut too 29 bop with 125 field points.
The bow has no shelf and is 3/4 wide at the grip., I call it Ambi, Because I shoot it Right and left handed.
What spine would you think would be best 40/45 or 45/50.
I forgot what I used to think I knew about Arrows.... :banghead: :knothead:

String material and point weight factor into the equation for arrow spine.  125 gr tips shouldn't add too much to spine requirements.  So you could go close to marked poundage.  Maybe 5-7# over.

My experience is the opposite.  A longbow not cut to center generally requires a spine that is less than the bow weight, so I would start with the 40-45 spine shafts, and see if you can find a point weight that works for you.

I’m with McDave on this. 40-45 cut to 29 with 125 point. I think the heavier spine would need more up front and a little longer shaft.

Several wood arrowsmiths sell test kits.  Start there with one of a couple different spines

Using 3 Rivers arrow spine chart, I came up with 44lb spine cut at 29” with 3-4” feathers and 125 gr point. (Assuming 12 gr. per inch and plus about 5/16” center shot.

Not cut to center definitely under spine arrow. 2nd McDave start with 40-45 and maybe even lighter spine.

McDave that is true.  I only have experience with D/R longbows and recurve bows.  One Kota D-shape.  Not familiar with non-center cut bows, should have stated that.

C’mon, Mike!
You should have half a garage full of five-gallon tubs of miscellaneous arrow shafts by now.

    Sticking to wood for now..
I think I'll go with the suggestion from above and my gut instinct and go with the 40/45
My recent bow from Howard Hill Archery, My Tembo, I have not used much.... I call it Ambi.
I'm waiting on a Target from RheinHart.
