Title: Morel Mushrooms 2021
Post by: Pine on April 12, 2021, 02:23:44 PM
Haven't seen a thread yet this year, so I guess I'll start one.
Anyone found some?
It's about a week before I'll start finding any here but those of you further south should have by now.
Let's see some pictures.
Love hunting Morels.  :jumper:

Hey Dale,  Do me a solid and let me know when you start finding them.  I hunt for them in the Custer / Walhalla / Branch area of the Manistee National Forest.  It's about a 1 hr 45 min drive and your heads-up could save me a long, fruitless drive.  Thanks and I wish you a great morel hunting season.

I'll be honest I really hate those maps. Mushrooming used to be a lot of fun. Now we have so many people from downstate coming up and looking around here that you can't even hardly find them any more. Theres even a guy who does morel tours! It's almost gotten too popular in the last few years

I would like to look for them, but I don't know anything about shrooms. Neither do any of my friends. I'm afraid I may be missing some real goodies.

Sam look up learn your land on you tube. I’m pretty careful with you tube cause anyone can post and there’s some bad stuff. This guy is educated and very easy to understand. He has id videos, finding videos, etc. Morels are one you about can’t go wrong with. If they look like morels and are completely hollow inside you’ve got a morel. Half frees look a little different but are also hollow inside and completely safe
Not sure where you live but pheasant back or dryads saddle is typically about the same time. Look it up in learn you land. So are ramps, fiddleheads. In north jersey/southern ny ramps are up but that’s it so far.
One easy place to look cause I’m sure you can Id tree the grow near is old Apple trees. Gotta be careful with too many there though cause the soil could be contaminated. There’s lots of other trees they associate with. Find out which they are locally, dead elm, tulip, sycamore, cherry, ash, etc in dif areas. You also need to know stage. Tulip trees will be alive, elm dead or dying, etc.
Local mushroom clubs in your area will prob be dirt cheap and have forays where they id all sorts of stuff and help you learn. Think the one around here is 5-10 bucks.
One more thing, raw morels are toxic they say. I’ve never tried to find out. Make sure you cook em

These annual threads always remind me of Dean Torges, the original morel thread starter back in 2003.

I really do miss him.  :campfire:

Hey Wudstix,  does that give the pork a mushroom flavor?
I'll have to try a pork steak on the grill with a side of mushrooms to see how the Texas hogs taste.

My wife picked up a dozen big yellows today. We walked around quite a bit, this was all we found. A few were drying out but most were prime. All in one spot low by a creek in the sun. Pretty dry here, west central Indiana.

The wife and I found four yellows out back yesterday and we had them with bacon and eggs for breakfast.
Then she went out this afternoon and spotted a patch of them further back in the bushes. She came and got me and we ended up with 18 total, mostly the big yellows.  One was as big as my hand.  :)
Smoked brisket and sauteed mushrooms in butter was our supper.

But it has been colder than a mother in laws kiss here.
