After several weekends of designing, building a form, and making riser templates for the sander, I finally glued up a test bow today. With my short draw I wanted something super short for hunting this year and on this form I can build a 48-52” bow. This test bow has Black Walnut cores and riser with black Gordon glass. I went with a 14” riser and .003 total taper. I’ll see where I am with weight on this first bow and adjust from there.

Nice
-
That looks good what is your draw length
-
Lookin good !!
Interested to see string profile on it . I had to back off to .001 taper to get mine to look like I wanted it to .
-
Very nice..
-
I draw around 26 1/2”.
-
Kenny, I go .002 on my short hybrids but have never built a bow with .003 taper. Did I goof up on this one?
-
That looks pretty sweet... Wanna see her strung up...
-
Not neccessarily , mine shot ok but looked like a coat hanger with the hook cut off, kind of just a triangle...
Thats why I was wanting to see the braced profile. I wanted some curves in mine when braced...
-
Looks promising. Something very appealing about short bows.
-
Wow! Sexy curves. Looks nimble!
-
Anxious to see more on this one, I love curvy things.... :readit:
-
Some of the Shrews look like a triangle strung.
-
Yep but I didn’t want mine to !
-
Ironically the look of the Shrew bows was what I was going for.
-
Cool!
Got her strung up?
-
Not yet Kenny. My busy season at work so not much time to putter during the week.
-
Sound to me like you need to take a day or two off... ;) :goldtooth:
-
I’m all for that but I’m the only guy at work that does my job.
-
Been there ! Got a half dozen T shirts...
-
Talking about your tapers. This on is 56 in. 13 in. riser with .004 forward taper. This one can go 30 in. but they look weird at full draw. For a shorter draw the riser could be longer.

Wow Stic, that's a fine looking bow you got there.
Is that your own design?

Sweet bow Mike

Lonnie parts of it are pirated.

48” 46.7#@26” with 8 1/8” brace height. Limbs are straight and tiller came out dead even. Currently 5/8” at the tips and 1 1/2” at the fade outs. Not sure how I feel about it. I think somebody with 24-25” draw length could shoot it comfortably but it’s stacking quickly beyond that. I would like to see a little more reflex curve mid-limb at brace. I went with .003 total taper so any input on what to change is appreciated. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

So in the photo the bow is drawn to 26”? Looks good to my eye.

What is the taper rate?
You could go back to the form and put more reflex in it.
Other things to do with the same form would be less taper and/or tip wedges.
Others probably have further suggestions.
-
Whatever you got it pulled to in the pic you are out of draw. Needs tip wedge for sure.and the deepest part of the deflex further toward the tip. Keeping it a bit stiffer to mid limb.
-
As it is you have a perfect formula for a small person or kids bow by building with a smaller stack.
-
Stic is right, the angle between the string and the limb tips has passed 90 deg. So the bow is stacking seriously.
-
I decided to take some weight off and make it a kids or woman’s bow. Yesterday it was gaining 5 pounds from 26-27”, now it’s gaining 3 pounds per inch over the 25-27” range. I could shoot it at my length but that’s about max.
-
On 48” and longbow I’m not sure what answer is. Recurves have been made that short but I think finger pinch will be a for sure with a longbow .
Bow looks sweet tho!
-
Hey Kenny, do you think going with less taper like you did will give me the look I’m after strung? I could shoot this the way it is now at my draw length at 38 pounds comfortably. I’m going to build another one at 52” in the 42 pound range at my length.
-
I think so, I dropped from .003 to .001 with power lam and tip wedges and it made a lot of difference.
-
Go down to a 7" to 7 1/4" brace height and try it out... You may gain an inch or two before stacking and you may get the look you want with reflexed limbs... Next I would keep most things the same and make the next bow 50" with a 7" brace... She looks like she is bending good to me although I would like to see a pic at 20" of draw...
-
To keep the bow that size and you want the limbs to be reflexed at brace you will have to put on a longer string and a shorter brace height or change the angle of your fades....
Just my opinion...
-
Thanks for all of the input.
-
Over the weekend I glued up a 52” version with .001 taper and a tip wedge. I haven’t checked weight on it yet and I may be a touch long on brace height but it’s the look I was going for. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Right on!!
-
I really like that look too. Nice job.
-
How long is the riser on the 52 in ?
-
14 3/4”
-
So the riser is FHLB only shorter?. Will you share you stack once you get the weight on it.
Be interesting to know if it will have good manners being that short.
-
Sure thing. I hope to check weight tomorrow after work.
-
52”, 7 3/8” BH, 14 5/8” riser, even tiller, 52#@28” with a .260 stack, 1 9/16” at the fadeouts, 3/4” at the nocks. After I narrow the limbs and tips a tad it should be right where I wanted it. I like the profile at brace and the way the limbs are bending but I don’t like the bulge shape of the riser on the back. Next one will definitely get a different riser shape.
-
Man that is bending good. You say 1 9/16 at fades. Did you use 1 3/4 glass or typo?
And when you shorten the limb did you keep the same reflex. as the longer version?
-
I cut my shelf 3/16” past center so I use 1 3/4” materials and offset the quiver side of the riser for extra meat in the shelf area. This is the longest version I can make on this form. The other was a 48” bow off this same form. I don’t think I want to go any shorter than 52” with this geometry.
-
I see. But if you used a G10 Ibeam you would be okay for strength.
-
This way I can keep my widths the same and have material on hand to build a longbow or a recurve whenever I feel like it. Plus, my forms are all built with 1 3/4” LVL beams. I don’t build anything over 50 pounds so strength has never been an issue.
-
Looks purty good to me... Glad you got what you are looking for... Things may change when you go sanding on those limbs... I would map them and shoot them through the chrony before you sand them and then compare the differences later... It takes time but it's the only way to learn how the limbs work and how to work the limbs...
-
Got a couple coats of finish and wet sanded a couple times. One more coat after its lettered. Finished out at 43#@28”. Draws smooth out to 28 inches. It’s gaining 2.5# per inch out to 28” and 3# from 28-29”. I’ll make a couple minor riser shape changes on the back side if I build another one. I haven’t shot an arrow out of it yet but overall I’m pleased with how it came out. It’ll make a great gift for someone. I used some Boo flooring (2 lams tapered and kerf cut) on the form to keep the back from going forward so much

-
I made a new profile jig for the next one. I didn’t like the transition area from the fades so I made it a more gradual arc.
-
Excellent job!!
-
Gotta say that's one of the few non-recurves I like. The shape is almost like the the ancient Assyrian, except for the contoured, shelf cut riser. If it had a plain flat backed no-shelf riser I'd call it perfect.
-
That bow sure looks good. Do you have any chrono speed results. Would be interesting to see what such a short bow would do.

Are you using “s” hooks on that string?
-
Sort of. Those are chain links cut in half and welded. My makeshift limb alignment jigs.
-
Great looking bow and bending nice also.... Would like to build a shorter bow like that one day...
