Mark,
That looks a lot like a Sheepeater. Brent Rudolf developed the design, him and Mark Baker made them for several years then farmed production out to Mike Westvang. I made one and sent it to Turkey several years back for the TradGang bow swap. Here is a picture of the one I still have:
They had a version with a recurve style pistol grip too. Rigidity in the tips is key to the Sheepeaters performance, it took Brent several dozen bows before he got it to where he liked it. I had one that sent a 560 grain arrow 188 FPS 48#’s. I always shoot high with those bows.
-
They were all 50” nock to nock.
-
Could be a tricky one to lay up...and get off the form! :goldtooth:
-
Nice Walt.
Ya by any chance have a full draw picture of it?
-
I have a soft spot for those static tips. I built a few ASL/static bows and they shot pretty good but they didn't improve that much over the more standard ASL design.
-
No Deflex??? Especially for a shorter bow... Any reasoning behind that?? Or are you staying basically with the Sheepeater design??
-
Walt--Brent told me some of the tip stuff. Just going to go for it
Kenny all those 64" one's with the narrow tips were the same limb design
Roy full draw on face/back thread
Shredd I have been trying to buy one from everybody I found with my search on the net, I PMed many people.
Form is Made.
I will start with a .004 forward taper and then try a .002 forward taper

Cool, I look forward to seeing this one come to life. I don't know if I ever want a 50" bow but this seems to me the way to get the most out of fibreglass. How wide are you thinking for the first one?
Mark

This was the first bow I saw on the net that made me want one, Bad.
I searched and searched and I found a phone number on the Black Mountain website and called it many times.
On day he answered and we talked for a hour, He told me he was Driving a Semi truck from east coast to west cost every week. He did not have any at that time but had a 56" T/D, So we met across the Mississippi river in West Memphis at the Love's truck stop about a hour from my home and I bought it from him.
Really Nice guy. Here is the Sheepeater

The Sheepeater Indians had Short Sheep Horn bows and hunted Sheep in Montana before we came here a ran them off. I think all I have said is correct, Walt will know?

Start with 1-1/2" glass

Love this design, Max! Especially without the pistol grip -- just a plain Ottoman style forward grip. When you get it perfected, let's talk. Especially if, you know, the prototype turns out to be super low draw weight....
-
Mark,
The Sheepeaters lived in what is now Yellowstone National Park, mostly late spring through early fall. As the name implies, they hunted and lived using Big Horn sheep as one of their major sources of meat. As previously noted, they were one of the few tribes that used Horn to make a bow.
I do not know much about the Shaman bow. Brent and I talked about a three piece once or twice. I believe he designed one (and didn’t like it) to allow people to travel with it. I could be mistaken, Mike & Jason might have developed it later. I do not remember seeing one in person.

So not very many out there

I reckon it will have some oomph!

Still a lot of work to do on the form, it has a little warp from end to end so I have some angle iron to bolt to it, and the hardware for the form and the washers to keep the lams in line. I may have to make the form hardware because of the angle iron being in the way.

:jumper:
50# now still needs rounding over
Off the form and buggers cleaned up.

I looked for many years and never could find one.

Well ya have a nice one now....

Interesting design. What taper rate are you using and what was used in the Sheepeater?
-
Same as the Sheepeater, .00something

Cane & Basket BAS-FOR-0003 Flat oval Reed 1/4" x 3/64" x 275'
the Rattan will snap easy when dry
I soaked it in water for about 30 min. while I was gluing on the floppy arrow rest , Tite bond 3 ,shaved down the starting end , 1st wrap overlap just a bit and kept going, pulled the tail end under the next to last lap, pull tight, cut off the tail, I put a spring clamp on it for a while.
I will post pictures of the start and end of the wrap tomarrow
Some of the pieces are short 5/6 foot (some are 13/14'), so I made a skive joint (just like lams) for a test, super glued it and soaked it too, just a little light sanding.
My piece was 13' 6"and I used just over 7' for mine.

That wrap looks awesome! :shaka:

Thanks Stag
A big Thanks to Brent Rudolph Sheepeater spirit bows

Thanks for the rattan info. The pictures are great.
Do you think a recurve style is wrappable?

It does NOT stretch any, so I would say no.
If you did your belly something like this

Mark Baker was using rattan on his selfbows long before Brent and him got together making Sheepeaters. Brent was using leather on the bow handles long before they were called Sheepeaters. I used leather to finish the handles on the ones I made.
I’m not sure if the Rattan will take a dye. However, you need to soak the rattan to make it pliable enough to wrap around the handle, I would worry about dye staining the bow. If you are careful, the rattan might be dyed while on the bow. I can’t say for sure, but there might be waxy rind on the rattan.
Mark did most of the rattan handles and finished them with the same rattle can finish he uses on his selfbows. I think he lightly sands the rattan shoe-shine style to remove any bumps or slivers, then with a soft spongey sanding pad, before spraying the finish.
-
Nice bow Max. Is it a pill to string.
-
Cool bow Mark!!

Flem and walt
I wish I would have darkened it up a little, not much, Info from Cane & Basket
Flat Reed and Flat Oval Reed is rattan splint cut by machine from the larger diameter rattan poles. Flat Reed is flat on both sides with the top side being smoother. Flat Oval Reed is flat on the bottom side and oval on top. Both can be used for weaving chair seats and basket weaving. Both can be stained or dyed easily.
Available in natural and smoked color.
Flat and Flat Oval Reed are put up in coils that weigh approximately 1 lb.
Like my other statics Stic, hard to string at first , but I'm use to it
Thanks guy's
