This will be a build along. Dont be getting in no hurry tho. :bigsmyl:
It is a TD curve.
So far I have the form pieces cut out and am working on wedge shaping jigs. They are curved and instead of freehand every time the jigs will make it a lot easier. And you only pulling hair once.
Here is the limb shape.

This one prolly be slower than Roys :biglaugh:

-
Yes, bring it on. :)
-
Watching :jumper:
-
So you won’t have to bend your wedge at glue up?
It’s milled with the curve in it?
-
Cool project. Im feeling inspired! :)
How long will the wedge be?
-
Is it finished yet, Stickypops?
-
Not yet Roy.
The part of the wedge that will be on the riser will be flat then the curve will take the shape of the front of limb as itapers to fade.
10.5 from the butt.
-
Awesome! Thanks for doing a build along
-
Looking forward to it. Build a longs are always fun and informative.
-
Thanks for sharing...
-
I got my wood stiffener chamber lids redone today a one half of the wedge jig ready also. Making the jig fit and sand until you get a good fit then the next ones should be easy.

nice
-
Looks good, Mike.
-
Interesting, but when grinding out curved wedges like that won’t you have cross grain in the wedge, unless the wood has grown in a curve?
-
Bue I think it is best to have the edge grain going from top to bottom-flat grain on the sides.. This piece is quarter sawen hard maple. Being between lams and glass will be fine I think.

-
I understand, very good. I must have gotten flat grain on my mind. :knothead:
-
I understand that Bue.
First thing that goes is the short term memory...
-
I had to edit that one I had edge grain twice.
How ya know about the memory thing Roy :bigsmyl:
-
Oh it's hit me a few times.
Ya have a picher of your wood stiffener?
Curious as to how it makes your wood harder.
:wavey:
-
Have to pull a vacuum on it and let it soak for a few days then cook it bout 4 hours :bigsmyl:
-
I see...
-
Roy, I think you need some of my fish airbladder soup. :biglaugh:
-
Ship me a quart, Bue:)
-
Have to pull a vacuum on it and let it soak for a few days then cook it bout 4 hours :bigsmyl:
Sounds painful :scared:

:wavey:
Not sure I care to see that myself.... :o
-
Well my wood is soaking right now. There will bee pichers after I cook it
:bigsmyl:
Anyhow I got most of the hair pulling done today on the wedge jigs and they come out looking pretty good. Now need to finish the form and grind some lams.

These will be different limbs for a recurve. Already posted the new form at the beginning of the thread.
My walnut soaking now Mr. Roy :biglaugh:
-

-
The form is finished. Got on the strap spacers and lam keepers. I will use a zip tie to pull the lams down on the curve.
Mr Roy my old walnut is kinda slow about taking in the juice :dunno:

Well dem lams sure as hell don't look like they will be going anywhere... :)
Looks just like a tad overkill...
-
Good job Mike
-
Lookin good Stic
-
Looks good and looking forward to following this build. The shape reminds me of a Predator takedown.
-
Will you use tapers on this one?
-
Blue I am taking a SWAG at the first stack. I like stablecore and .001 taper. Going for 62 in. On the first one.
-
Lookin forward
I like a .002 with 1-1/2"wide at the riser and just a little wider than .001 taper 5" from the Nock  :bigsmyl:
-
Stic, can we talk you into doing a how to on wood stabilizing sometime?

I like those keepers. Did you make them from scratch or start with a likely suspect?
-
I have used washers but was not happy with how they worked out. I think I seen something like these only wood and one bolt. So I come up with the slot and two bolts.
I got some lams ground out today and accents in the riser block but no pics.
My walnut still soaking juice :bigsmyl:
-
One limb cooking now.
Riser block cleaned up and squared. Black Frogwood MD with osage and maple accents.
-
Osage always looks good with dark wood
-
coming along nice!
-
how do you like the frog wood compared to dymondwood?
-
This is the medium density stuff more like the old actionwood. Mat be better than Spectraply because the layers are thinner and makes it more dense . They do have a High density that I have not tried yet. But would think it will be comparable to dymondwood. And you dont have to buy a full panel.
So I went out to unplug the hotbox. So I went ahead and got the limb out ( All I am doing today ) seems I got plenty of glue on it :dunno:

Nice, Mike.
-
Thanks Roy.
Second limb cookin and riser sled made today.
-
Moving right along stic, lookin good
-
Oh I like that a lot.
-
Well I had therapy at 1:20 so got some done this morning. Cleaned the limbs up to width.
Put a hold down on the riser sled being it only has a very small stop on the corner. And sliced the ends of.
As you can see I need to slim the wedge ramps down some on the next one.

-
Yeah I just hope it don't come out too heavy. I got this body builder buddy that can prolly handle it if it does.
Flem I just seen your request on the stabilizing. I do have a piece soaking now. Will start a thread on it soon.
-
 Your a good man stic!
-
Okay got some time in on this one today. I got everything drilled and the limbs on. Seemed to look good with the string down the center.
The rest of this one may really be delayed. Got word today that my mom may be going to Hospice. With all the restrictions on Covid it is really hard to even get in to see her.
-
I got very little done today. Got the tips tapered and some tip overlay pieces ready fo glue
My mom has gotten a lot worse and going to hospice tomorrow so we went up to see her today.
-
So sorry Mike.
-
Looking good, will be interesting to see how this one will bend. Take care of mom.
-
So sorry Mike.
+1, that is a terrible situation to have to deal with.
Mark
-
Sorry to hear this, Mike!
-
Thanks guys. I got a little more done today on this project. I went ahead and put the tillering blocks on it. The brace is too high in the pic by an inch or more. Lucky for my it looks to be pulling pretty straight. I got a riser pattern cut out. Overlays on the limb butts and tip overlay stuff epoxied together.

Was gonna do some on it today but got a call from my sister. I had to rush to moms hospice.

Okay not a fun few days and a bit of a heavy heart.
Back at it for a bit yesterday. Riser taking shape.
-
Mike, I know how you feel.
Sorry for your loss.
Very sharp riser.
-
Thanks Roy.
Got her strung up today. Still needs a bit of fade tillering and and a little on the other tiller to. Came out way too heavy for this old guy. So got to get some stuff for lighter limbs.
-
Nice..
I know all about the too heavy for an old guy:)
-
Mike, sorry about your Mom. I hope she passed in peace.
I like the way you have brought that bow to fruition. I've been paying close attention to how it would go with that pad angle. What do you think the angle is?
-
Pad angle with the reflexed butt wedge :dunno:
-
Pad angle of the riser.
-
35 degrees I think
. Will look for sure tomorrow.
Thinking I got it all figured out and the next one will be quicker. :bigsmyl:

Curious because I have a box of risers that have a very similar angle. When I saw yours I
thought they might be usable. Going to be following with interest.
-
Sorry for your loss Mike. That bow looks great. Looks a lot like that fancy camo Predator you was showing off a while back
-
what is the limb width did you go with?
-
BO-R Layed up 1.75 and finish at 1.625.
-
Got some parts ordered from Kenny for lighter limbs.
-
-
Back to this one today. Fine tuning the wedge jigs. One I was able to use the form and router. The other one I got close and used the ole slatherup with smoothon trick after getting it close. It took two times but works great.

Had to shovel some snow around here today.
I decided with a .199 stack in order to get some veneer room I would use .030 belly glass and .040 front glass. But decided a front veneer on this set of limbs and bamboo stained same color for the belly.

I had to plow snow wif dah quad...
Shovel wouldn't start.

-
Thanks Max. Hang tight Bue.
Kenny we maybe can work something out. Cause you gots lot of stuff I can use :biglaugh:
-
Mike, as much as I like the looks of it, I wouldn't hunt with it. And that bow needs someone to shoot the hell out of it! Would hate to see it being a wall hanger...
-
Open your mind kenny-son

Maxi-Boy
Longbows rock:)

Recurves fall out of my rubber boot when I'm sittin on stand. Tried it.. :biglaugh:

Now if thats your trade bow tho, I'd sure like it!! :bigsmyl:
-
:wavey:
-
Stickypops, I'll take that bow, heck with ole fuss butt in Mo...
-
I could change up.I guess.
-
Okay this set of limbs came in at 40 lbs. About 5 light. Oh well can shoot it all day long tho. The limbs were a B to get pulling straight. I may use two stable core or go parallel on the next one. Striped maple on the front.and close to the tip shape I wanted.

Nice tip.
-
x2 what they said
-
So what do you all think going from .001 forward taper to parallel leave how much out of the stack???
-
.005
-
.005 how you come up with that Roy
-
Pulled a number out of a hat:)
-
:bigsmyl:
-
I think that is 1/208” Roy
-
Yup that's what came out of the hat but I converted it to .005:)
-
Josie refigured that first me ,,, :biglaugh:
-
Cause she takes after her Grandma:)
:wavey:
-
-
Cool looking tip profile stic

The string silencers bring it all together. The "mechanic" in my shop bows to the artist in yours. :notworthy:
-
Thats really sharp looking, nice work
-
Thx again.

That limb shape looks similar to Keith Chastain's design

x2!
-
Have heard of Chastain but never seen one. This limb design is sort of borrowed with my changes.
-
interesting limb shape...
reminds me of a limb that was actually computer generated/optimized in the modeling app I use.

Got a riser for the first heavy weight limbs for my body builder buddy.
-
That's nice and I like that limb design coming off the riser...
-
Gots a little shape to it today. Get the limbs pulling straight Monday. This one should come in 60@28. I am not real crazy about the lines of this riser but it sure fits the hand nice sooo
(https://i.imgur.com/LWii55i.jpg)
-
I like that riser shape.
-
Well just crap. I got these limbs pulling good. I leave the tape on until I sand the glass to avoid scratches etc.
I found an unwanted surprise. Out of the hundreds of the bows I have built never had this before. The only thing I can figure is the bamboo was marginal on layup. About 1/16th wide and full of glue. I am thinking it may not be a problem.
what you guys think?? Gonna be a field tester bow.
-
If it's solid it should be fine I think.
-
It otta be ok.
-
Got a 55# D/R with osage veneers that did that from the glue moving when I pressed it. It's fine, first split limb D/R I ever built... :biglaugh:
-
Cool I will just call it my split limb curve then! :saywhat:
-
Kenny does osage keep its color under clear glass
-
Finish with uv protection may help but mine darkened up
-
had a bit of group therapy today. This design is pretty sweet.

Keep it in a bow sock when not using, it can stay that way for a long time

Yep, or if you like the darker color, set it in the sun unstrung of course.
I have done that to a couple at the patio door...
The bright yellar sticks out in the woods like a sore.......... thumb I guess.
-
Good shooting Mike.
I love the looks of the bow too.
-
Thx Roy.
An idea if you want your wood to stay yellow is yellowheart.
-
Hmmmmm... :o
