I have been shooting and hunting with traditional bows for a little over 20 years. I have always used carbon and aluminum. I have always admired beautiful wood arrows, but I just never really gave them a chance for hunting. After talking to several buddies that shoot and hunt with wood, I decided to build a dozen Surewood arrows. Last week I killed a nice doe with one of my wood arrows that I built. It was something extra special about it, I just can’t explain it.
50 # Wes Wallace Mentor recurve. Surewood arrow with Zwicky No Mercy double bevel.
:campfire: Please post pictures of your wood arrow kills. :campfire:
-
Sorry for side ways picture. Can’t get it straight. :banghead:
-
Once you go wooden, there is no going back, wooden arrows are special. As for the picture, I was taught to rotate it 4 times (a full 360) in your photo editor before posting. Seems to work for me, crazy eh?
-
Nice Deer too, Congratulations!! :-)
-
This little piggie scared away an old doe.
-
This little piggy ran past a 6 yards too slowly.
-
An hour later so did his buddy.
-
First pic worked?
-
18 yards , still hunting, the feathers on my cedar woodies were primary wing feathers froma gobbler i killed last spring with my bow.
-
Try this again
-
Wood arrows only for many years. My buck from last year.
-
Great pics guys, been a tough season around here. EHD has hammered us. Only took one doe w no pic taken. Here’s one from last year though
-
First doe of this season. Cedar arrows tipped with 160gr Ribtek. She dropped within sight of my stand.
-
Second doe. Douglas fir arrow with 175gr Abowyer Wapiti. Took out both lungs and she ran for 40 yards before dropping.
-
First boar I ever shot. Same arrow as for the second doe. He went about 60 yards with the arrow hanging out on his off side, then another 15 after it dropped off. Blood trail was good and Bisch's buddy Zeke had no trouble recovering this big guy.
All three animals were taken at the London Oaks Ranch in Texas.

Horsehide-from the looks of your shot placement on all three of your kills, they had no choice but to die in sight! Good shooting sir and congratulations!
-
I was telling a buddy of mine about how good my arrows shoot. They are very forgiving and extremely quiet.
I am thinking about my next set already.
-
Matt, its good to see your post. I guess this means you and your family are doing well. I'm glad to see that you have given wooden arrows a chance and that you have had success with them. Let's see many more pictures of your wooden arrow adventures. See, I told you wood arrows are fun.
-
Here’s a few. I think from Trad I’ve only killed a couple with carbons. I would use wood or aluminum over carbon at this point. Wood in nice.
-
That’s a nice bunch of bucks overspined
-
NICE PIC HORSEHIDE!!!
Here's a pic from 2003...debut of Tradgang...

I switched to wood arrows this summer. Douglas fir. Sure wood shafts and Wapiti shafts. I took a nice buck and yearling doe with them. I also made some for my hunting partner of twenty-seven years who took his first trad kill with one as well.

My first bear with a bow. 6’ foot bear shot with a 60/65 Elite Sitka Spruce out of a 53# Blacktail.
I have aluminum, carbon, and wood arrows.
To me wood is what I really like to shoot. Now I use Surewood Douglas Fir from Snag.
-
Great kills everyone! Awesome stuff with wood arrows,or any arrow for that matter!
-
Wood arrow kills will exceed us long after we are dead..... All other materials pale in comparison.... same as animals that fell to arrows vs bullets... just a heads up of truth.
-
52# Black Widow, cedar arrow, with a Bear two blade Razorhead
-
Love this thread, it’s been quite a while since I had a wood arrow kill, I pretty much moved to aluminum a lot of years ago with some woodies mixed in. Pretty cool seeing these in the days of everyone worrying about EFOC on skinny carbons. I may dig out some cedars after seeing this... keep em coming
-
IHere is one.
-
Here is another.
-
https://i.imgur.com/RUojT3b.jpg. nothing beats a wooden arrow you made.
-
I've been fortunate enough to get these two deer this year, both with Douglas Fir arrows by Snag. Fir meets Fur. :coffee:
Great thread, Chase
-
First kill with a wooden arrow around 20 years ago. I was 15 I think when working my first job at Jeffrey Archery. This is with Owen Jeffery’s personal Classic 60 and wooden arrows I made out of ramen dowels from the hardware store and 125 snuffers. Those were the days! I really haven’t hunted with wood much in the past 10 years but have really been wanting to get back into to them.
-
One more with wood arrows for our group. My hunting partners’ son shot his first kill ever this morning with Surewood shafts and a double beveled Zwickey No Mercy
-
One more with a woodie this evening.
-
Awesome job guys. :archer2:
-
I was blessed with another yesterday. Same setup as earlier. 50 # Wes Wallace Mentor, Surewood shafts. I did change broadheads and try some old Bear Razorheads. They fly wonderful and get extremely sharp.
Broadhead was sticking out the other side and stuck in the dirt. When he turned to run, the arrow broke.
-
Congrats Matt!
-
Nice wok Matt! I really like the old Razorheads.
-
Nicely done, Matt!

Toelke Pika---40#@29" ( i was drawing 26"). Arrow was tapered 5/16" Wapiti cedar w 125 grain single bevel Grizzly. The buck ran about 80 yards before dropping.
-
Here are a few.
-
My first traditional kill back from 2015 when I first switched to trad. Used a POC arrow and Cold Mountain Longbow, both made by Bill Stroupe in NC. I still mostly use wood—it works and it’s just cool!
-
Here's my first and only wood arrow kill.
-
Ok wood arrow killers, I am bringing this back up for some updated footage.
Let’s see what ya been doing with those wood shafts. :campfire:
:coffee:
-
I use Sitka Spruce, Fir, and Ramin wood arrows. Wood is all I ever used except for a couple years in the 70’s. Tried aluminum and didn’t like em.
This was earier this year. Full penetration at a steep angle. 45#, Tuff Head. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
So far this season.
-
Surewood shaft
-
Everything I’ve shot in the last 20 years of more has been with wood arrows. I had a year or 2 that I messed with aluminum.
-
Well....none of my bows have ever been polluted with a carbon or a metal arrow (tongue in cheek guys :saywhat:) only ever shot wood...
It's been awhile since I've been bowhunting, mainly due to the covid thing, but here's a couple of wood arrow critters

A Lex,
Tell us about your Buffalo kill. Bow specs and broadhead
Awesome job guys.
-
My first and only woodies kill. 3/22
-
Lex,
Come down to Vic ….
Deer are everywhere . Great way to break the post Covid blues 😎
-
I started off 30 years ago with aluminum, but just never took a liking to them. Anything except wood seems improper and takes something away from the whole experience. I have used cedars for all my shooting and game taken, except that first deer taken in 1991. They are time proven and do the job. Second kill with Ron French woods and vintage Bear razorheads.
-
Hey Billy congratulations on a fine weekend and another wood whacking.!!
-
Took my third kill with the same Ron French wood arrow and Ace Standard 160 head
-
Congrats yourself Gary! Ron French makes some fine wood arrows, drop dead gorgeous and deadly.
-
A Lex,
Tell us about your Buffalo kill. Bow specs and broadhead
Matt
I did a story about the hunt in the April/May 2018 issue of TBM.
If you can't find it or would like it, I can re tell the story here....
Basically a single 1100 grain Red Balau wooden arrow with a big Grizzly Kodiak broadhead from my 75lb Blackwidow longbow at 11yards, put right through the middle of where it would do the most bad, and he was down and permanently out in less than 20 seconds.
That's the nutshell version, but there is quite a bit more to it. If people want though, I can put the whole story in.

-
Lex, you don’t have to. I can look through my old magazines and see if I can find it.
Unless you just want to, I am sure the Gang would like to read it.
I was curious about your draw weight, broadhead and arrow. Thank you for sharing.
-
Lex, please tell the story on pow wow...I can go back and read it in tbm but a lot of guys don't have that option...we could use a great hunting story :wavey:
-
Good stuff guys. :campfire:
-
Congratulations Matt! I’ve only shot a few with woodies. Found this one from a few years ago, Nebraska public land heifer

Picture from the 1980's. Still shooting wood and I have never seen a need to change.
-
This years buck. Sherwood shaft.
-
My 2021 buck shot with a Surewood Douglas fir homemade arrow, 4-blade Magnus broadhead launched from a Wild Horse Creek Destiny longbow. I have used wood arrows for 47 years and have not had a single animal complain about that wood arrow passing through them. 100% satisfied customers.
--Mike
-
Congratulations! Great buck! What was you bow and arrow set up?
-
The bow was a 62" Wild Horse Creek Destiny takedown longbow (of my making), 50# @ 28". The arrow was a Surewood shaft with a Magnus 4-blade broadhead. The arrow weight was about 600 grains.
-
Thanks!
-
Great buck Horsey!!! Very nice :notworthy:
-
:clapper:
-
Great hit on that buck Horsey.
-
Thanks, Gary. Here is a photo of the damage.

-
Mike makes some of the finest shooting longbows, and is a guy that can put the arrow in that right spot, and always gives back to the sport!!
-
Wyoming Antelope.
-
2011 Whitetail.
-
Colorado bighorn after applying for 24 or 25 years, Wildhorse Creek longbow cedars I made 4 blade broached.
-

-
DGW those are some cool kills.
-
Colorado Bear
-
Sitka Blacktail Alaska
-
Colorado Mountain Goat 1999.
Having trouble with some older pics rotation, I have been very blessed to have drawn some good tags and went on some great hunts, Most are do it yourself hunts.
-
Colorado Mountain Goat 1988 Drew tag fist year I applied. Bighorn T/D
-
Have shot woods for years. I also shoot Aluminum when I get lazy or just could not put time in to making good Cedars. Retired now so any hunting arrows will be cedar or sure wood shafts. Glad to see guys still shooting woods.
-
Blackwidow recurve. Surewood shaft. Grizzly broadhead.
