Title: Converting a Bear Black Bear riser to ILF limbs.....
Post by: flntknp17 on November 30, 2020, 05:36:16 PM
Has anyone done this recently?  I have a Black Bear compound that I got in the late 80s, but I haven't shot it since the early 90s.  I would love to give the riser a new life as a recurve.  I know this was popular 10-15 years ago (e.g. "Warf"), but I haven't hear much about it as of late.  I know some of the conversions used takedown limbs from various (often Samick) recurves and some (the later ones?) used ILF fitting limbs.  I have many sets of ILF limbs from my days shooting Olympic target bows and I would like to use them.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt

Most of the interest I have seen lately is doing a “bolt down “ , no ILF plates. I believe plates can be had on the big auction site still. The last time I heard the man doing a machined ILF connection has taken a break from doing it.
What sort of killed the Warf thing is the inexpensive risers offered from China. So a guy wanting to try ILF can buy a whole bow for less than the cost of a BB riser and the mill work.

Initially I was looking for a riser just like yours and had quite a bit of interest in doing a bolt down. But, discovering that really decent recurves could be had that cost less than an ilf limbset and that the cost of a riser(if lucky 20 bucks at say, garage sale) plus recurve bolt down limbs was STILL going to put me in the same range cash-wise as a bow like the Bear Wolverine that I bought, I said, what the heck, so I pulled the trigger on the Wolverine. Very happy with it too. But, if you have the riser and ILF limbs you can find good plates for 40 bucks maybe 50. If you really really like that riser or grip I would say, why not? I googled them ilf plates. Come right up on the search engine. Best of success whatever you decide. BTW...some risers require some machine work to fit it all together....even the bolt downs. If you do it go slow you only get one shot with the dremel.

Well, it appears that the Hawkeye Plates are no longer being made or sold on the big auction site.  I may be out of luck.  I can't find any others on google search.  I sure wish I had gotten some when they were available.

Stick a set of samick sage limbs in there with some thin cork material on the sides to prevent side to side movement. Bolt right up.
