Title: Best Fletching Jig for Wood Arrows
Post by: PastorSteveHill on April 21, 2008, 11:19:00 PM
Wondering which fletching jig you guys use for wood arrows that have the nock already set to the grain...  My blitz. just doesn't seem to turn them out right. The feathers never match the shelf for clearance...  Any ideas or tips or a different jig?

With the Bitz and the Jan I temporally stick the nock with a dab of hot melt glue on the edge.  I rotate the knock an 1/8 turn counter clock wise tack it with hot melt, fletch the arrow then rotate the arrow 1/8 turn to realign the arrow to the nock and the grain.  This puts the bottom feather into the corner of the shelf.  With right wing with the jo jan I do not rotate the arrow for a right hand bow and neither do I rotate the arrow for left wing for a left hand bow.

I have a "Tri-Heli-Fletch" by Hoyt which I purchased back in the late 1950's which fletches one complete arrow at a time and has a set of clamps for both right wing and left wing.  I've not seen it recently (in the past 20 or so years), but it works great on all my wood arrows.

By the way is anyone familiar with it.  Shame it can't be found anymore was perfect for the home fletcher.

I've never had a problem with the Jo-Jan on wooden arrows.

I have only used the Jo-Jan jigs. I use it for carbons and woodies. They work really good. Can't afford the really good jigs like Bjorn!  lol

Steve,
I am having the same problem. My Grayling turns them out perfect. My new Bitz works fine on Carbon and Aluminum arrows, because I can adjust the nock position once they are fletched. But with woods I can't do that because the nock has to line up with the grain of the arrow. Any suggestions???  :help:

Do you have the correct nock reciever to match the clamps.  Such as a LW clamp with a L reciever.  If they are mis matched the feathers may not align on the shaft correctly.

Yes, I have a left wing reciever and clamp.  Still doesn't turn out the way I need them to?

I don't understand the trouble you Bitz people are having.  I just finished some woods, and the nock was glued on in the correct spot according to the grain.  Then just fletched them.  Turned out great.  Are you starting with the cock feather first?

Bowman0202 , I too have the Hoyt and have used it for years with no issues. I only have one set of clamps, but all my arrows look the same. Funny how that works. You're fight it is a good unit.

Was just trying to pinpoint your problem.  Hard to troubleshoot without the jig in front of me.

I thought maybe you weren't starting with the nock receiver in the right place, that would be with the flat part facing towards you, which would be your cock feather.

Also, have you adjusted the clamp to the shaft size?

Other than that, I'm not sure what else it could be. Maybe try the TM nock receiver as mentioned?  I know they're not cheap though.

Steve! you can take the reciver out of the Bitz,
if there is only 3 holes, it is the TM
