Title: A nice deer, and tracking exercise...
Post by: chase perry on November 22, 2020, 11:33:07 AM
I was very pleased yesterday morning to get this spike that I've seen on a few occasions.  I'm hoping I connected with him prior to running of any does.  This is not the variety of 11 pointer I want perpetuated on our place.

It was also exciting to let the newly appointed Minister of Tracking, Perry (yes, Perry Perry is actually on his passport) work on a trail with a deer at the end of it.  He has done good work on mock trails of up to 75 or so yards.  Now that he knows what's really supposed to be at the end of this task I'm thinking he will be extremely motivated for future outings, not that Jack Russells operate at a deficiency of enthusiasm for anything.  In addition to the deer, we also found this decent artifact on the walk back.  Not bad shape for several thousand years old and getting stepped on by a cow, or a buffalo, or a mammoth...

Now that we having something in the freezer we'll be patient for something to go on the wall.   :coffee:

That's a good one to take.  Congrats.  Perry looks ready for more action.

Congrats on your buck!

Good looking pup! I have a JRT that I use to track also. He does great sometimes, and no so great at others. He actually has too much energy I think, but even if he never tracked another critter as long as he is alive, he is still the best dog I have ever owned!!!

Congratulations!!!  That guy looks a little too old to be sporting so little bone.  Good cull.  Nice pup, as well.

Wow, these tracking stories make me want a dog! However, I just don't have an adequate place to keep one. Besides, my wife and 4 cats don't want one. I sure do enjoy seeing the pictures and reading the stories.

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words!

Bisch; great looking dog. My daughter had me print that photo of your dog on the buck to help prove to the boys in her class that Jack Russells can track.  They are special animals.  When I met my wife she had a 5 year old Jack Russell.  He lived to be 16, and did pretty good up into his last days.  They are intensely loyal.  I think we had been dating 6 months or so before he first acknowledged my existence.  Perry is about 3 now, but still has a lot of youthful exuberance for most anything, though he is getting better about staying on task.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with friends and family.  Good luck out there, and be safe.

Chase
