Title: Bows with colored glass
Post by: David Flanrey on November 16, 2020, 03:07:02 PM
I'm going to glue up some longbows with colored glass (brown, black, green) on one side and clear on the other.  My winter project.   Which side usually has the colored glass?  I have never really paid any attention.  Your input would be appreciated.

That's what's great about building your own bow, make it however you want.

I made a takedown recurve with black glass on the belly and Waterfall Bubinga veneer under clear glass on the back. Looked very good, I think.

If I had to pick a side, I would say put the clear glass on the back, that way the nice wood grain won't be a distraction whilst shooting.  (Heck I dunno)

I'd put black glass on the belly side to mimic the horn of a traditional wood-horn-sinew composite bow.

Guess it depends on who you want to see the pretty grain. You or the Deer.

zackly....

i mostly use colored glass and i generally use two colors unless i do an all black bow...  i like to use darker colors like black and brown on the back of my bows and lighter colors like green, caramel and red on the belly...  the darker color will be facing your quarry for camo reasons if you hunt and  you get to look at the purty, colorful side while while waiting for your quarry...  plus i like the looks of it that way...

Thanks guys for the input.  I mostly make bows with all clear glass.  Cause I love to see what the wood brings me.  Occasionally I make a all color bow but not often.  I have never made one with color and clear.  Think I will go with the color on the back.  Just to see how it looks.  Will be doing this after deer season of course.  Got more hunting to do first.

Roy, ole McKenzie knows he will win either way.  I knows where to get the gwass!

That looks fantastic, are there any more pics to be seen? My bows are made to suit my whims and this sort of art work is something I would like to start adding onto them.

Thanks roy
I have used Stencils before with walmart acrylic paint with all the colors.
I like the cracked paint stencil google that.
Ues a pouncing brush and pounce on a paper towel to remove most of the paint (it's called Dry brushing)

At one time I wanted to do a psychedelic pattern but never did.

Mark are you putting clear coat overthe paint on the glass? If so any issues with it reacting negatively with the paint? Those limbs look great with that black on there, I just started a bow with caramel glass, love how that looks.
What brand paint did ya use?

You have to mix with water, If you don't like it wipe it off with a wet rag.
No issues on the finish.
Any Acrylic like this

I have made a heap of bows with one clear and one colored and 90% would have the clear and veneers on belly, because i reckon thats the side the user sees mostly.

My son Noah is going to make his first one piece D/R longbow and I'm not going to look over his shoulder.  Much.

Kenny, we sanded lams Saturday.  He found out how quickly you can screw up when one pair of lams slipped on sled in sander.

Ok. Got some black gwass from ole Kenny.  Got the lams all sanded and now working on riser insert.  Hopefully glue up Saturday.  Black on back, zebra belly, walnut riser.

When I re-learn how to post pics I will get some going.
