My nine year old son and I are heading to TX this week to hunt small game/frogs/bowfish with Curtis Kellar at 7th Age Bowhunting. Just a Father/Son getaway that I threw together. We're slipping in a trip to the Alamo, too! Hope to have some good photos to share with all of you.
Looking forward to some pics!! Make sure you bring some broadheads for those rabbit sized frogs down there!!
Very cool Tripp!
Hope you and your boy have an awesome hunt Tripp. Can not wait to see some pics.
the Alamo is a kool place to visit.. the only place you can't take photos is in side... Have fun it Tejas, great ppl & great food.
I'm sure you'll both have a fabulous experience and wonderful memories. Texas is a magic place, and Curtis is truly "the right sort". Got'ta love them frog legs too. Now that's what good eat'n is all about!

Good on ya -- have a blast!
Have a good time Tripp! Send us some pictures and a story for the Stickbow.
You got it, Gregg! Thanks everyone for the kind remarks. I feel like a kid at Christmas. My son has no idea yet. :) We just polished off an hour of practice shooting at 3D targets and he is really shooting well. Hope he takes his first mammal, reptile, fish, bird, etc! Will definitely post pics upon our return.
Well, things have been busy and I am just now getting around to updating our (my son and I) trip to hunt with Curtis Kellar. I do have some photos, but do not know how to post to this site. Maybe Curtis can assist in that, or one of you who read this thread.
First, San Antonio is a LONG drive from Florida. Just the perfect one on one time I was looking for with my 9 year old son. He is growing up way too fast!!!
Wed. April 23 - Departed from Pensacola @ 1PM and made a bee-line for one of my favorite restaurants in the world...Prejean's in Lafayette, LA. Great food, atmosphere and the perfect stop for two hungry bowhunters. Hayden (son) could not get over the funny dialect of the local band. We could not understand a word they were saying but they still sounded good! After stuffing out guts of blackened catfish and boudin balls, we headed out for Katy, TX.
Thurs. April 24 - Left Katy, TX and met up with Curtis at his camp. I can't tell you exactly where it is. Just know that it is secluded and in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!!! It is about 1 1/2 hours due SE of San Antonio, TX. The cabin proved to be the perfect getaway for me and my son. I will spare you all of the details of our hunt. However, just know that Curtis knows hogs. If I did not know any better, I'd say he is part hog himself. We saw over 30 hogs the first afternoon but the wind as not right for us. We saw turkey and deer every day.
Friday April 25 - Took a day off from hunting and visited San Antonio. The Alamo was great, but the real thrill for me was the Buckhorn Saloon. Got to see Bill Negley's African video of his elephant kill and the arrows that Fred Bear made for him. The animal exhibits were quite impressive. A MUST SEE for every traditional bowhunter in my opnion. We filled our guts on some local Mexican food and made it back for an afternoon hunt. Shot at and missed a GIANT raccoon that weighed 45 pounds if he weighed an ounce.
Saturday April 26th - Stalked around with Curtis that morning. Had a blast shooting at..shooting at....COW PATTY'S all morning. Believe me, it is more fun that it sounds. Of course, we made my son retrieve any arrows that had a solid hit! :) Watching Curtis stalk is like watching a "work of art". I thought I knew how to stalk! I would not want Curtis stalking me with a bow in his hand, that is for certain. We arrived back in camp in time to kill the SHE BULLFROG of the county. I had wounded that thing with Zwickey broadheads the previous two days. My son had shot at it twice and missed. However, a razor sharp Rocky Mountain Titanium finally did her in. She was huge and DELICIOUS! I shot it with my son's Black Rhino longbow to prove to him that his bow was powerful enough.
ALL IN ALL A FINE TRIP! Can't wait to hunt with Curtis again. He is as fine a guide/outfitter as I have ever met.
Have a good time and good luck! ;)
