Title: Saying goodbye to a friend
Post by: hessian on October 26, 2020, 04:43:26 PM
Last evening my wife and I had to make the decision to put our German Shorthaired Pointer to sleep. Jäger had been a dedicated member of our family for nearly 12 and a half years. This dog has seen us through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We lost our Son in 2012 and Jäger kept us going. Just as Jäger was passing, he started to wag his tail. We knew it’s because he got to see his boy again. Jäger had a nose and prey drive that was second to none, my best hunting buddy and our family protector. If you have a pup at home, give him an extra pat tonight.

I'm sorry for your loss, My Brother

I have never lost a son, but have lost many dogs. The pain seems unbareable....
2 years ago, we got a little Plott hound pup for Tyler. 21 years old now, he has never had his own dog.
During this whole virus thing, she was a Godsend!!! Kept me company and entertained, when at times I thought I would loose my mind... Thing that seems to help me, is I know they'll be waiting when my time comes.

As fate would have it, we just adopted a Plott two weeks ago. Otis is amazing and having him around has really helped our daughters so far [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

So sorry, Adam. I know how you feel. Lost my English pointer when he was 18 years old. That's pretty old for any dog.

So sorry for the loss of your dog.  My dog is with me just about 24/7.  Unlike the other dogs in my life, where I took it somewhat for granted that I would outlive the dog, with this dog it's anybody's guess who is going to outlive who.  I kind of hope I outlive her, because I think I could cope with the loss of her better than she could cope with the loss of me.

Hessian, I’m sorry for the loss of your buddy. He was a beautiful creature. I can tell just from your words that he was well loved and will be greatly missed. Treasure the 12 1/2 years that you shared with him while he served you and your family. Hopefully, the new pup will help with the grief. Take care.

Friend,

Please accept my condolences.  It is a heart-break when we must let a dog family member go.  All of us who have shared this life with a dog know your sense of loss.  Remember, life is way too short to live without a dog.  Take time to grieve but remember the most profound statement of what your dog meant to you is recognizing that life without one is unacceptable, and get another.

I had to give my pal, Ollie, back to God last year this time after 12 1/2 years together.  But I had come to realize that I was prolonging his suffering on order to postpone mine.  He deserved better than that.  But I cried like a baby as he got the needle and the last words he heard as he slipped into sleep were "I will always love you".

As it turned out, the week that I first noticed the symptoms that led several weeks later to a diagnosis of terminal bladder cancer, a litter of buhund puppies was born.  Seven weeks later I visited that litter and one, a male, just could not get enough of me.  I wrote the check.  A week later I brought Dusty home, turning my life totally up-side-down.  God works in mysterious ways!

Life is too short to live without a dog.

That can be rough.  Lost my Kaiser to a Chevy on a country road.  Best grouse dog East of Mississippi. He could find birds in a K-Mart parking lot.  Crash didn't most of the work, but I was forced to finish it with him in my lap.  He was all busted up.  Brings tears even remembering.  I was about 19-20 at the time.

Always a sad occasion.   The memories of a good dog will warm the heart though.  A good friend like that is a blessing.
Sorry for your loss.

Very sorry for your loss, it's tough losing your dog.

Sorry for you loss. We have been through it more times than I want to remember. Seems each time it’s a little harder. But I don’t think I could bear to be without a dog. Ours has been a God sent during these last months of shutdown.

Sorry for your loss. Believe me I understand. I’ve had many dogs, 14 at one time I competed and judged them. It’s still never easy. When I got divorced I had to give up every dog cept my Cracker dog. Maybe the best I ever had.
When going through my divorce she helped me, listened many times to me talking to her. Lost her n my Kid dog in a week. I still miss her. She’s with a couple kids here and my buddy’s Brit.

Hessian, So sorry for your pain on losing a son and now your dog pal. I loved your perspective on the tail wag in his last moment - I will think of them together now.

Our dog Barney either has an infection or cancer. We are waiting to see if antibiotics will reduce the swelling. If not then likely next Friday he'll be put down. We live in a fallen world. But I know if he passes I will see him again.

I am so sorry for the loss but hope the new puppy heals the pain.  My wife and I lost our Lab about 12 years ago and I made a promise to her to not bring another one into our home as she could not go through it again.  I broke that promise 3 years ago and our new puppy now grown Lab is her best friend.  I wish I had gotten one sooner it would have healed a lot.  Never easy and best of luck to you and your family!
