Glass that is... I don't have the patience or skills to do a self bow or a boo backed one... :dunno:
-
Always want to see a build :jumper:
-
I'd like to see it
-
For sure I nd to see one. What is it? Hybrid? 1 piece? 3 pieces?
-
I always enjoy a build.
Specially when it’s gots pichers. :goldtooth:
-
HECK YEAH!!
-
Are we not bowyers? Build on, please!
-
Will it take long? :biglaugh:
-
Shore, I wuv gwass builds...
-
I'm always interested in seeing a build of any kind........but I make bamboo backed bows because I don't have the patience for glass bows! :biglaugh:
Matt
-
Ok so we are gonna do a 45@28 - 58” fhlb one piece
I picked a pc of grenadillo from the junk stuff and have some veneers Dan Raney gave me when he was hunting here. Hope they look ok together...

Build along is just what is needed now. Get it on, get it on, bang a gong, ding dong. :goldtooth:
-
What are those veneers? Think they are going to pop real nice!
-
Mike, not sure , Dan didn't know and I don't either. They were .035 and I sanded to .025 to clean up. That made em a lot lighter color, will be a little darker and browner than maple I think...
-
It's been 24 hours and no glue up yet? What the heck is going on boy?:)
:wavey:
-
Little home remodel on back deck, little huntin , very little work and about that much bow buildin... :biglaugh:
-
I gots sum more pitchers so you can foller along ...
-
That Knotty wood minds me of Roys head
-
I really like the wood Kenny, but not sure on your tool list, all I see is a chisel, screwdriver and a claw hammer... :dunno:
-
Lonnie , low budget scrap wood bow build ... :biglaugh:
Now to saw the veneers to 1.5” width...
I use this as a straightedge to keep the little veneer saw’s teeth on veneer only not the plywood

The veneers were .035 but I ran em thru the sander to get fresh glue surface and now they are .025
Lonnie, I think I had a traditional pencil in that pic too... :saywhat:
-
Have the core lams made , now to scarf joint them and make long ones outta short ones...
This shows a finished lam and one bout half done. They should both be ground to a feathered end just like a riser fade when done.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Now to glue them together I have an aluminum straitedge 1/4 x1.5 x72 that I lay plastic under glue area and then clamp first lam down on the straitedge. Then give a good coat of ca to that lam and press the other lam down where it goes. Look at second lam to be sure it has a good coat of glue also .
Now lay it in place , flip the plastic over it , feel the joint and get it as flush as possible. Lay a block on top for even pressure and clamp, I use a scrap of plywood. You have about 15 seconds to do this so don’t fool around and have all items ready to go.
I let it set for at least a few minutes to be sure it’s done bonding , could prob do less but ...

Not too shabby ole timer:)
I like that little cutting tool ya have too, ya make it?
Looks to have a serrated edge, ya use it like a saw?
-
Looks like a veneer saw.
-
No way:)
Ah I see now..
Might hafta get one and make a gwass bow..
-
Well that just cost me $20.00:)
They have one that has the teeth pointed in one direction for cutting on the pull stroke, which is better straight teeth or angled teeth?
-
Heck I made one I knapped outta chert but the kerf was a little too wide to suit me...
-
This one is angled, which will be best?
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Mine is too to keep hand off bench . Blade is reversible
-
I'm partial to pull saws, Japanese style. Better control on the pull stroke, cleaner cut, smaller kerf.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I certainly would not buy the first one you posted Roy, one botched pronunciation and you will be in dutch with the wife.
-
Mine is a pull saw also , I get along good with it.
-
How much ya gotta pull it, Kenny?:)
Ok cancelled the first order and ordered the cut on pull stroke. 4 bucks more..
-
As much as ya want , usually bout three pulls does it ...
-
What are those two dangly things on your handle Roy?
-
Cherries, Flem...
Does it splinter your wood, Kenny?
-
Meant the teeth are at an angle compared to the first one the teeth were straight. Both have the angled handle.
-
I use this Japanese one, cut on the pull stroke. Roy, how many pulls depend on age.
Kenny, I’m gonna copy your straight edge, good idea.
-

Yes, as the teeth recede, the pull count goes up. :)
-
LOL
-
Geesh I been cutting veneer with a traditional box cutter. :dunno:
-
Geesh I been cutting veneer with a traditional box cutter. :dunno:
Me too, stic. If cutting to length it's the Bowyers secret weapon. Hacksaw!!!! :)
-
Ah so that's why you guys bows are wavy on the sides?
-
Box cutter works too, on the length I just use scissors...
-
GETTING BACK ON THE SUBJECT :banghead: :bigsmyl:
Those veneers look like quilted maple kenny?
-
Don't think so, Mark, they were more reddish before I cleaned em up in sander. Maple is more of a tan to me when oxidized ?
Hope they aren't too light for the riser but I'm goin with them.
-
 It's gonna look good ;)
-
Sawed the riser out while scarf gluing...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
This is what the scarf joint should look like when done. I mark center of all lams on edge to line up with center Mark on form
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Gonna be a pretty riser.
Ya gonna put an accent stripe between them?
-
I can't git a scarf joint like that on my 6" x 80" belt sander, I need to get a small disk sander with the sanding disk GLUED to it should do a great job.
I new I could learn somepen from you
-
This old beast uses a psa disc but the table is way better than most new ones for staying square to disc
-
I do them on a Rigid oscillator and find it very difficult to get good scarf joints. :(
-
They can be a pain for sure , I just take my time and go with the flow...
-
Gonna be a pretty riser.
Ya gonna put an accent stripe between them?
Not sure yet, makin it up as I go...
-
This bad boy makes good scarf sander.
-
Mike, what kind is that, and how is the table for sturdy and staying square?
Thanks,
kenny
-
Had some .050 glass that looked like the sanded side just hadn’t cleaned up when they made it, so sanded to .040 ,,,
Got it taped and center marked, also mark center on edge so I can see it during glue up.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Then a prob , while test fitting riser I found a bad grain in it...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Now searching for a replacement ...
-

Glad it broke before glued in a bow tho!!
-
Ah crap, sorry bud.
-
No worries , found a chunk of Bocote that was1.25” thick ?? So I found some stuff to I beam it . There is no tellin how this bow will look. LOL

I got some pretty wood from a gun stock maker estate sell. I can root through it and send ya something if ya like.
-
That bocote not purty nuff? :biglaugh:
But thanks Pops...
-
Bocote makes me itchy:)
-
Ah crap, sorry bud.

-
OH Markie, dat wuz baaad.
-
Bet ya cussed when that cocobolo broke. The bocote sure has some nice grain to it, thats gonna be a nice lookin riser.
Bocote is one of my favorites.
-
Bocote with a red/brown colored I beam is just stunning.
-
It was Grenadillo, but had that coco color... Nah, just glad it broke before I glued up into a bow.
Bue, I'm hopin so . Should have put yellow accents in tho, that might have been really killer with bocote and bubinga. Ahhh maybe next time...
-
You gonna have that thing ready to shoot by this weekend?
-
Not lookin like it!! LOL

-
Nice Kenny and John.
-
Kenny that sander is Harbor Frieght. I have not used a bunch yet (Ben in TD mode) But the table seems to be pretty solid so far.
-
Beautiful wood combo on that bow Autumnarcher! Top notch!
-
Kenny, I am kind of glad your first riser failed. This new one is going to look even better!
-
Yup the ole boy could use a new riser...
-

-
:laughing:Roy
Looking good Kenny! :clapper:
-
New riser? Soft or hard wood?
-
Glue up today :goldtooth:
-

-
The glue, ea40 seems to be non critical on ratio since you can mix equal or 2/1 so anymore I just use a bit less hardener and go with it...
Keep everything clean and mix well then mix again. You have time and neither component will hold a bow together by itself .
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Other accessories laid out, bout go time...
-
That's weird, I only laid that stuff out once...
-
You need a impact gun to build a bow :o
-
I like you guys but not nuff to take pics of the glue spreading !
Here I have the stuff on the form and the zip Ty’s in place, nice thing about them is you can tighten them slowly and the riser moves away from the one you pull tighter so it’s easy to center it up on the form .
-
Yep easier than handles on the bolts.... :biglaugh:
-
A bit too much glue , but like a weapon I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.... :o
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
And last one for today, if you wipe the glue down between plastic you can tear most of it off the blank and grind less...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
-
looks like you could break those fades off :scared:
For a pro like you, you don't need no stinkin metal strip on top
-
Looking good Kenny
-
Ha Mark ! Just another test !
Mainly cuz I forgot the damn thing !
-
-
Ha Mark ! Just another test !
Mainly cuz I forgot the damn thing !
My experience is that it leaves a lovely fire hose pattern on your bow. :banghead:
-
I forgot one time to put the metal pressure strip on and found it more difficult to tear the tape off as it had a hose pattern, but only in the tape. When using zip ties I pump it up to about 20-30 pounds and let it sit for a while then pull them out. With a metal strip I once left them in place until glue had cured with no ill effects. Without a metal strip I would think you would get som marks across.
-
Awesome details. I think somebody needs to do a full length video of spreading EA-40 on a 5 lam blank.
I know just the guy for the job :deadhorse: It's not me!
-
I'll not do it:)
-
Sorry this is goin slow but I'm rutting... :biglaugh:
-

That's awesome Kenny.
Looking forward to pichers of your big buck...

Hope your getting better weather than we are!!

-
70 here but Bro has seen 7 bucks cruising today so I'm gettin back out this eve with some sunscreen
In your spare time you need to be building a bow :biglaugh: :knothead:
-
Ok nuff complainin !!!
Here’s the glue I could break off after wiping it down between the plastic sheets ...
Don’t forget to transfer the riser centerline to the glass if anything moved cuz you are prob gonna grind it off cleaning glue up, this one was good except for the parallel lam. I saw it while gluing but didn’t mess with trying to move it because all else lined up good .
Here she is all cleaned up on one side and now to run her thru the thickness sander for the other side.
-
Must have kept stuff lined up fair, only 1/32” to clean up
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
My lovely assistant got glue on the tape (wait I don’t have one in shop ) so i Peeled tape off and retaped so my straightedge doesn’t tip and mismark the limb
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Looks pretty good with Bocote ?
Don’t mind Lucky , he’s a bit mental , especially around cats. Must have had a bad go with one...

Looks good Kenny :bigsmyl:
-
BTW, that pressure strip was in there! LOL You had me thinkin I forgot it... :biglaugh:
-
Looks good ole timer.
Hi Lucky
-
Now to lay out limbs , this is a 58” so I mark 29” each way from center of bow . OOPS wrong pic!! Almost laid out a 60" LOL
-
Now I’ve squared across where I marked the 29” from center . No pics sorry.
Mark center at centerline and at 29” marks and stretch a string from nock marks
This one is off a little bit . The tips should be in line with centerline mark.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I clamp a piece of mono at each end and check
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Here I move both tips the same way to bring in line with center

-
Where did you get that Yeller masking Tape
-
Thanks Roy , you prob just put some chriorpratcors outta biz tho!
:biglaugh:
Mark, bought that on ebay, said it was 1.5" wide, well it ain't It is a metric narrower than 1.5"
I bought 12 rolls of it and just use it here and there cause I didn't wanna send it back.
Told the seller and they said it was sold to them as 1.5 and they never checked it... :knothead:
-
I bought a roll of the blue tape was supposed to be 1.5" opened up and it was 2 rolls of 3/4". I think its a conspiracy to screw us up. they also did some of that metric mumbo-jumbo so I dont even know what it really works out to.
-
That's why I don't make dem gwass bows...
Ya gotta worry bout a 1/16th of an inch here and there....
-

now that really cracks me up... watcha expect one roll of 1 1/2"??  lucky you didn't get 3 rolls of 1/2"...  just too funny... i'll be laughing all night every time I think of this one...
-

-
Raining this morn so a bit of work on this, planning to be in stand bout 2
Temp is dropping 25 degrees today by dark , should be a good afternoon
I leave the line and the edge sander makes it straight
-
Cool...
-
I leave the line and the edge sander makes it straight
Is that cut with a bandsaw?
Good luck with the hunt, I've found the animals are restless and moving a lot as a big storm or cold front rolls in, then they bunker down until after the storm passes.
Mark
-
No I grind them on a 6" disc with 40 grit, 10 minutes to the lines and way cheaper than bandsaw blades...
Thanks, I'm about to head out, but wind is 18 mph now! LOL
-
Seems to be a lot of conspiracies these days ;) now one in 3/4 inch. I use the 2 inch yellow tape, put it on the glass and just cut off the overhang with a sharp knife.
-
Kenny, I know I'm off topic a bit here, but can you tell me a little bit about your drum sander? How big is it? Have you ever sanded down the edge on a whole bow on a smaller one? Do you have problems keeping it even, or is it pretty good?
-
I don't think thats a drum sander, it looks like a really sweet wide belt
Now I have some serious tool envy ;)
-
That emergency stop has me wondering:)
-
I think it's a G0527
https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-18-5-hp-wide-belt-sander/g0527
-
Yep, 527 18x48 belt it's a hog of a sander. You could run them on a drum sander just the same. If the first side I do on the disc is straight, so is the one that gets done with the big sander. They are usually really close tho.
-
Ah, that would explain why I couldn't find it under Grizzly's drum sanders...
Thanks!

Awesome
You missed the centerline on the nocks, time to get some new Glasses
-
-
Had to move over a bit, didn't line up thru riser centerline. Did that on purpose to show how to align tips with riser...
-
NO, the centerline at the string groves
-
That's what I moved, same amount on both tips. See the old line I checked centerline of bow with and the new line I moved over to line up with riser center?
-
 ;)
-
So, is it that you guys draw lines and measure stuff and all like that? :dunno:
-
All them gwass bow guys do that:)
-
Yup, we like to draw ... Now where's my crayon?
-
Don't you be taking Josie's crayons papa:)
-
Looking good Kenny
-
I'm going to try that drawing thing next time around. I usually just eyeball them and start grinding away on 36 grit till it looks sorta like a bow. :biglaugh:
-
That'll wook on gwass bowes I hear...
-
Just in case you are lookin Kenny Roy got all the PINK crayons afore they even boxed them up. :bigsmyl: :deadhorse:
-
-
Well dang , I was gonna get him some for Christmas ...
If you lightly sand the glass the overlay will fit better
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
This side needed a bit more
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I double tape at the ends of overlays and finish Sanding up to tape with a pc of sanding belt folded
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
On curved limbs I use 2 pieces of phenolic so I don’t have to fit to limb curve. I slip a sammich bag over end of limb and using limb as a form glue the pieces together . Then take off and pre bevel the inner end to make sanding to the limb glass easier. Then glue to limb
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Too dang wind and hot to hunt so I’ll do a bit more on this ...
Gonna put the belly overlay on, remember we smoothed the glass out with the curved block? Here is where it helps ya out. Easier to do a smooth curve on the disc sander than a bumpy one. Bout ten minutes and she is tight.
Also I cut a relief cut in the grip cutout , just habit to let the overlay flex a little when clamping. Just don’t cut into where the grip is gonna be ...
Marked

Fitted and relief cut
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Some rough drawing for riser shape, also keeps me from reversing the overlay. I want original grain to line up ...

Shaped the ends of overlay to save work later...

She’s glued on but I put phone away when glue comes out ...

Chicken ;)
Moar pics! This is looking great so far and I need something to tide me over while I am stuck at home and frozen out of the shop.
Mark
-
I'd take some of that in moderation... LOL
BTW I glued all overlays on with the blue top Gorilla CA glue. I glue both surfaces , glass first because I figure it won't absorb into it as much as the wood. It gives plenty of time to clamp (usually) :biglaugh:
-
I'd take some of that in moderation... LOL
It does make the hunting easier. Snow for tracking, no issues with cooling the meat and hanging in an unheated garage for a week is no problem. Not really t-shirt weather, though...
Mark
-

No wonder ya never answer my calls:)

I have that same problem postin pics here from by phone. I can either email them to myself and then download to my laptop, or just post em from the phone and let y'all hafta stand on yer head to look at em. Its kinda a photoshop roulette.
-
Got tips roughed in , May take the bocote/ bubinga layer off ... ?
Note the flexible rasp , just shoeshine it , easy peasy
-
Looking good Kenny :bigsmyl: Even if the overlay is crooked as hell. :biglaugh:
Those flexible rasps are handy. I use them a lot. Use a very thin strip in the string groove to take care of sharp edges.
-
That’s Roy’s fault, was lookin at his overlays and thought it was Sposed to be like that!! :notworthy:
-
I have that same problem postin pics here from by phone. I can either email them to myself and then download to my laptop, or just post em from the phone and let y'all hafta stand on yer head to look at em. Its kinda a photoshop roulette.
You can download an app called "photo and Picture Resizer" for free. It will resize, flip and crop AND saves the original as it was. From there it's easy to post from the phone.
-
Looking good Kenny :bigsmyl: Even if the overlay is crooked as hell. :biglaugh:
Those flexible rasps are handy. I use them a lot. Use a very thin strip in the string groove to take care of sharp edges.
I've seen sanding string somewhere as well that would be great in nock grooves...
-
I've got some of that sanding cord stuff, is kinda handy for string grooves. Easier than tryin to peel skinny strips of sandpaper.
-
I use the sanding cord, pretty neat stuff..
-
For those string grooves get you some emery cloth. I got 80 and 320 grit. Take your box cutter and start cuts on the end about 3/16s wide then rip it into strips. Clamp one end down then roll it like twisting a string. The 80 will take material out. then 320 to finish.
Flexible round rasp. :bigsmyl:
-
I guess it could work:)
-
Well I marked the riser out and before I knew it I had it roughed in , shelf cut and shot it. Sorry no pics of process , guess I was really into it( and Freebird was on radio )
Zwickey thought I was gonna take her stogie for celebration!!
-
In that second pic, I think I'll change the profile of the riser to where the point is at the maple stripe ...
-
Sweet and I agree on 2nd picture.
LOL on Zwickey.
Good job on pichers.
-
Just lucky ... lol

Goodlooking piece. Dog looks allright too.
-
looking good kenny...

Thanks guys!!

Looks good Kenny, my kinda dog stoogie smoker :)
-
Looking good Kenny, I had those veneers for over 20 years. Got them from a retired cabinet maker. He did not remember what they were but I don't think they were maple. I do have some brazilian rosewood veneers from him so that should tell you how long he had the stuff before he gave it to me.
-
No I'm sure they aren't maple either. I wondered how old they were because the ones I've bought recently were .023" and these were .035"..
-
Start date...

Hey, I have a bow I've been working on for over three years. :) maybe ill finish it in 2021.....or maybe not. :dunno:
Don't let em rush ya, Kenny.
-
Right on Mike Lee!!
But look at that form!!
And how I'm drawin the bow too...

And if you wanted to play with more power lam you could gain a little for short arm guys to.
-
Really good numbers for sure Kenny take it out to 31” and these bows are crazy fast, I really like that design a lot , It’s highly modifiable with always good results :notworthy:
-
Damn that is fast, make me feel like a Turtle
-
Great build a long with a great looking and performing bow as a result. What was you stack or did I miss that?
-
Hi jess , .285 with the superlam and .040 glass.
The pic of the stack has Bocote veneers I see . I change stuff as I go ... lol
Ended up using different veneers .
-
Flem , speed is down the list a couple notches for me but cool when it happens ...
-
Thanks Kenny the .285 at the butt correct?
-
Yes sir except the SL I measure at 18” from butt and add the .018 for the taper to get nominal butt thickness.
Like for a .060 in stack I make it .042 in center of lam
-
Splain dat in fractions....
-
Yes sir except the SL I measure at 18” from butt and add the 18/1000 for the taper to get nominal butt thickness.
Like for a 60/ 1000 in stack I make it 42/1000 in center of lam
How dat?
-
How dat?
Outstanding. :biglaugh:
How about some more pics of the complete bow since it it is kicking ass and taking names at the range already?
Mark
-
I have to sand and spray it . If I can shoot it decently it might get to go huntin . Hard to give up my 4 year old hunting bow .
It won’t be as quick when I get silencers on string and shoot with fingers instead of the machine with caliper release...
-
Dat better..
-

You're among friends here, we won't complain about seeing it without makeup. I just want to see a couple overall shots of it to see the profiles and how it all looks in its final form. Before I order a kit for one, anyway. :bigsmyl:

Mark I have made a few of the FHLBs in 60 in. You will like them.
-
Yep you will like it I have made these bows between 58” & 64” both in glass and glass carbon & shortened the risers 12 & 13 “ all where great performers very adaptable design ,I have one in the works now 56” 12” riser ! also shortened the power lam on a few, it’s hard to go wrong with the design !
-
Ritchie I know you will fill us in on the stacks for that 12 in. riser. :wavey:
-
Mike I will dig out my notes but if I remember right I used the 60” @28 50lb stack and 12” riser cut 1” off the super lam for a 60” @31” 48 lb don’t quote me on it let me see if I can find my notes , I built that bow thinking it would shoot heavy arrows better but it worked better with light arrows ,I posted it in a thread a while back ! maybe I put the specs there !

"If you think an inch of draw doesn’t do much , study those numbers!!!
Long armed guys get free fps lol"
Crap I've been goin at this all wrong. I was uppin my poundage to get some more speed outta my 26" draw length. WHen all the while I shoulda be tryin to grow some longer arms.
-
Yup!!

But still no more pictures I notice. I guess I should stop complaining about my 28" draw in this case. At least us short people get to use shorter bows that are handier to carry...

Sorry , have family in for thanksgiving , hunters in for the lease , and orders in to fill. Kinda on back burner for a day or two.
And my camera is lost in the sock drawer ... :biglaugh:

Doesn't matter, the batteries are dead...

or you could shorten your fingers...
on my bows i get about 9 fps extra for an extra inch of draw... i just thought of something though... if you draw an extra inch you gain an extra 2 or so pounds... so to be fair you only gain about an extra 5 fps for an inch of draw... i know it seams obvious but i never really thought about it like that... i more or less always gave credit to the extra inch and not the added draw weight...

Nice Kenny

The longer draw = longer power stroke will be faster. But if you if you keep the same GPP with the added pounds of the longer draw it wont be as much.
Kenny that is looking good at full draw.
-
Doing some sanding and lowered the shelf some. I like the arrow fairly close to hand..

That’s just nuts, if you go in your pics and rotate it 4 times right back like it was it posts right !
-
Very nice. How thick was the overlay you used on the back in the riser area? Is that just cosmetic?
Mark
-
Thats a .040 black glass, and a slice off the riser but at the point your index finger goes around grip the glass only has about 3/8" (.375" Roy) wide left so its cosmetic mostly...
-
I'll get some outdoor pics when it aint rainin and I have the finish finished...
-

I usually go even tiller, this one ended up a fuzz negative after finish sanding. Didn't check before I sprayed it, but doesn't seem to make any difference... yet...
-
Looking goooood.
-

Ya Richie, he will prolly poke somepin.
-
Nice... what does she look like at brace??
-

👍
What is the brace in above picture? Looks pretty low.
Thanks
-
Looks like 7 to 7.5 to me.
-
I think it was about 7" in the pic, then when I started shooting it, I have raised it to 7.5"
Thanks folks, haven't shot it enough yet to know but it will be hard to replace my 64" TD for hunting, I've shot it for 4 years I think, so maybe just more used to it. Need to be as accurate as possible to hunt with anything.
-
Nice looking bow
It has a clean, fluid look, one of the most visual appealing design, to my eyes.
-
Thanks folks, the TD is getting the nod for hunting right now, this 58" seems loud and wants a stiffer arrow than I have without dropping front end weight or buying new ones. Plus the TD had done me well so I'll set up arrow for this one after season is over.
-
Good thinking grasshopper.
:wavey:
