Title: Red Wing Hunter - Refinished WOW!
Post by: Hatrick on April 20, 2008, 09:43:00 AM
I've been looking for an older model RW Hunter for a while now and managed to come across this one. I believe (not sure) that it's a pre 65'. Either way it's a beauty.  I made a new B-50 string for it and it shoots great. This bow loads up real early in the draw and remains smooth out to 28". I don't chrono bows but I believe this 50 pounder shoots as fast as most newer 50 pound bows I've shot with modern string materials.

It took me a day of looking at it to realize that 2 small holes in the glass on the belly side of the riser had been repaired (probably from an old bow sight). Glue lines are tight and the riser fade outs are superb. I think we sometimes overlook how well some of these older bows were made.

The person selling the bow said that he thought it was refinished years ago by Bowdoc.Very nice refinish work indeed. So Bowdoc, if your're looking at this, I was wondering if you recognize this bow. It was signed by Bob Lee and Buddy Stamper I assume around 1996.

Enjoy the "eye candy."

That bow belong to my former business pardner and long time hunting buddy who is no longer with us...well he's not like deceased...he got married (same difference). He sold that bow back around 1998 as I recall. That bow was a fine shooter and rock solid.I have one almost the same however the one I have is 2 years earlier and is rosewood..I think your right yours is a 1965.....We got the bow signed by Bob and Buddy at Denton Hill.....Pretty darn neet to see them still in service. Please check out this pic.I wish I had taken some of then signing the bow....bowdoc (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/rwh001.jpg)

Bowdoc, thanks for the Great Information!! Love the shoot button. Sorry about your hunting buddy, sounds like a tragic ending to a once happy life to me.

This one certainly is a fine shooter with a nice piece of bubinga in the riser. I'll probably just shoot some 3D with it. I would hate to put a scratch on it. Then again, once hunting season gets here you never know what bow I'll take out. I'll be heading to Denton Hill this year myself.

That's a beautiful bow!  Love those old Redwing Hunters.  Just wish they'd made them for a long draw.

hatrick,I would have to double check my notes...but I do believe Larry the then owner of the bow myself and two or three other yahoo's were down on an eather sex blacktail deer hunt...Todd one of the yahoo's kinda had some bad luck with his bow....Larry offered the Red Wing in the pic you have as a loaner....with the condition if it got hurt scratched or any other damage.Todd would eather be the new owner or Larry was going to shove.....well anyhow..Todd's last words....don't worry !! ever hear that one before. He arrowed a nice blacktail doe that same morning with what I believe to be your bow..I will check my notes from then, but I am almost possitive thats the one.Pretty cool bow...bowdoc

Very nice bow. Looks like it has some good stories to go along with it's beauty as well.

Bowdoc, neat story and yes, well, I have heard those famous last words a time or two. Glad this avoided the "shove" and had a good ending.

Chris, in a lot of ways that's what really makes an old bow unique. You look at it and wonder what stories it could tell if it could only speak to you. I think this ones found a new home for a good long while.

The old bows kinda put some tradition in traditional, if you know what I mean. I've certainly sold a few I wish I had back! Anyone out there that has a 62" Dale Dye built in 1987 with my name on it (David J. Henn), brown glass and bubinga riser let me know. Maybe we can make a deal.

David,I checked my notes last night and double checked with Larry this morning thats her.....She's got one fat blacktail doe taken from the lower Toutle River section of Mt.StHelens under her belt already (single arrow to her liver if that matters and was a Robin Buck broadhead on a wood shaft)Lar figured it was somewhere between 1996-2000...Thats a great bow with a little history anywho .....bowdoc

I got it as a '65. The '64s were made of Brazilian Rosewood and normally had real tiny tips. '65 was made of Bubinga and had tips that were small, but a generally little bigger than the '64 .....i.e., like yours. That's certainly a keeper Hatrick. That bubinga really rev's me up.

Dave, thats what I dig the most about the old ones, the stories and history in them. Cool that Don could provide such a story. She's a keeper for sure.

Hey Jim, how you doing buddy. If only they could talk, right! I believe there's a shoot a Heart of Maryland this weekend. Can you make it?

Yeah, Don thanks for the confirmation on the story. That puts a little extra special meaning to the bow. I may just get a chance to add a little history there myself one day. Tell Larry it's in good hands and she'll be well taken care of.
