I got this Osage Stave at the Tennessee Classic in 2019.
I may or may not have it ready May 2021 for the classic.
68" or 70" NTN
about 73" long

I got the width down to size

I have some propeller to take out on the limb close to the camara

Nice snaky stave. Did you get it from Clint?
I'd leave the twist alone until first brace. You may not need to do anything. Snaky staves are iffy enough. No need to add another chance of unnecessary strain unless it is needed.
-
Yes and James got the sister stave.
I was thinking the same, but it's about 6" off the fade and a straight area, so maybe.
My luck has not been very good on snakey staves so some of those dog legs will get backed with linen and wrapped with serving.
-
Gonna be a fun project.
-
Outstanding!!
-
Thats a nice one for sure. It even looks like it's slithering!
-
Looks like fun.
-
I shot one years ago that looked like that. my body vibrated for awhile after the shot :dunno:
-
So yer saying it's been years since your body vibrated?:)
-
The area near the handle with the whoop-ti-dos and snakes could be a concern because the growth rings above and below each other could be running different directions. There were a few staves that came from a tree in KY at Pappy's a few years ago like that and only 2 or 3 survived becoming bows. At least this area on your stave is at the handle.
Just because a bow is snaky doesn't mean it won't shoot well and smoothly. Here is an example of one that Clint collaborated with someone else at the Classic a few years ago that shot quite well and smoothly.

-
The 3 snakey bows to the right of center in the below pic may be the only survivors from that tree...
...and this is a stave that was given to me at the Classic a few years ago that I contemplated for a few years before giving it to Will Harris to build a bow because I chickened out. Will made at least one of those 3 bows above. This snakey stave below that I gave to Will was a corner fence post for over 60 years before it was given to me.

This picture shows 2" fades, but I changed it to 4" fades, maybe that will help

-
Holy smoke. That is a challenge.
-
This is the 4th one I'm trying to make, the first 3 did not work out for me.
Fingers crossed
-
Looks like an enjoyable stave to work. Jawge
-
I glued on some Linen on the back of one end and wrapped with string serving at the dog leg for now.
I been doing some floor tillering and have both limbs bending some.

Looking good. That's a good idea with the string wrap in those critical places. I never thought of doing that.

Looks good Mark.

At some point I have to take the wrap off and bend it :scared:

You would think someone with the last name of painter could draw better than that...
-
I'm a bowyer not an artist:)
-
I like those 3 spikes on top :jumper:
-
My most fantastic and painful (in many ways) blowup was on a super snaky bow. Took a shot to the ribs that left a nasty bruise. Thankfully no head damage. But I'm sure YOU'LL be fine :)
-
Thanks John
I heat corrected some propeller out of one limb last week.
The dog leg area (the hump on the right) has been wanting to bend from the start, so I clamped a 3/16"x 4" long scrap piece to the belly while doing the floor tiller, and it still is wanting to bend, so I glued 3 veneers .020 each (.060) and now it's NOT bending.
I braced it to 3" the other day while scraping and now to 5"
And the serving wrap is off
I'm getting somewhere now :bigsmyl:

That’s quite the bowstring you have there with the turnbuckles. You could fool a newbie into believing that they’re there to adjust brace height.
Dave.
-
Love the bow string. Hope it works out for ya Mark.
-
Thats a patent pending 6 color bow string
-
Here is the patch of veneers I glued to the belly.
This is where the serving wraps were.
With the linen on the back and the veneers on the belly it should be good.

I guess it's ok.

-
Looking good, Mark. I like the belly patch idea. That should help hold that snaky area together.

Not looking too shabby.
Those two humps outside of the fades gotta be giving you fits.
Not a lot you can do with them though.

Love the bow string too. Smart trick

Z
mid limb out to the tips needs to bend more.
It's try to bend at the fades a little at 19"

I wanted to brace it very slowly hoping nothing bad happened

This is number 4, all the others broke before I had a chance to get them tillered, So 7 years, almost there
I'm taking my time, I still have to order Western Diamond backs to glue on. “Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” :jumper:
-
I did get it bending much better today ;)
-
-
You are going about this the right way, Mark. Slow and steady wins the race.

Slow and steady is about all that ole boy can manage now a days, Pat..

Just barely, Flem. :bigsmyl:

LOL Pat.
Ya all notice how crooked Maxi boys stave is and he needs a turnbuckle to get it strung up?

Two turnbuckles. :readit:

Yup he must really need help.

Can you get a little bend above and below the handle, just off the fades. It looks quite stiff there.
-
Can you get a little bend above and below the handle, just off the fades. It looks quite stiff there.
It’s bending all the way to the fades
Need to work on the left side
Bigger ellipse roy
-
You sure the bow is sitting level in the cradle?
Looks high on the right side.
Your picture is small vertical wise.
Attach it with the option at the bottom instead of how you are doing it.
-
the tips are level at the top of the tiller tree plywood
(https://i.imgur.com/ZGZXoc2.jpg)
Is this enough to down here?
Pain in the butt to tiller, It's been looking good up to now.
The middle of the bow does not matter, The tip timing is what we are doing
Thanks Roy
-
Have you picked top/bottom limb yet?
-
It's kind of going back a forth a couple times.
I'm sliding the handle left or right while I pull the rope.
So not yet.
I got a new picture roy :banghead:
-
I level the riser from fade to fade and don't worry where the tips are.
The tips/limbs are going to change while tillering.
I tiller for equal limb timing by keeping my tree pull rope tracking the vertical line on the wall which is aligned to where my middle finger will be on the bow string.
I could care less where the tips are or if the tiller is positive or negative.
My bows shoot great and are whisper quiet.
-
Out past the 2 humps on each side of the riser it's basically flat, look at the unbraced picture Reply # 74.
I went threw this at the Tennessee classic with the guy's there.
this bow has no level, the first thing I did when I laid it on the tree was shim the riser to get the tips level and glued on a shim, I'm not tillering the riser I'm getting the limbs some what bending the same and watching the tips.
Remember, this is a stick
Trust me, It's the only way.
The ellipse is helping me alot.
-
I know it's a stickbow, that's all I make.
Do it your way.
I'll do the pictures for ya.
-
:bigsmyl:
-
Seems to me the biggest difference between bowyers is how they position the bow on the tree.
Level the handle
Level the end of fades
Level the tips
Personally I level the tips, but at brace height. I figure with hand on string ready to draw, the bowstring is going to naturally be held perpendicular to the target no matter what the handle configuration is.
-
How does this one look?

-
I'd still like to see that right limb bend a bit more between the fade and that hump if possible. Other than that I'd say it's looking pretty good for a youngish old fart.
-
Yup it's flatter than a pancake there, Pat.
I think he's skeered to fix it:)
-
Hey Pat, have you seen maxi boy lately?
-
Here I is

Ain’t so
-
Phew!!!

-
I'd have to grow my hair out if I was buildin those sticky bows so's I could pull it out easier...
-
I have some Sheep/Ram horn, I cut a piece off and boiled it for a while to soften it up and tied in some reflex on a caul so I could sand the belly side for a tip overlay.
I'm going to replicate Rattlers
(https://i.imgur.com/gF3UGDn.jpg)
-
Nice Mark..
Where did ya get the sheep horn?
I got some moose and caribou horn from a guy in Alaska.

I was wanting it for thick (1/4" +) tip overlays but it was to thin.
I found a use for it

So I worked on the fade on the right like Pat/Roy said and mid left limb, Mo Better
I've had these files for 20 years, so I picked out the one's I needed.
It took about 6 hours to shape them.
Turned out nice :bigsmyl:

4" fades on each side.
I've been seeing some fades done this way so I thought I would give it a try, not so easy the first time but came out nice.

Arrow rest is on the right and will be a ambidextrous rest

WOW

-
Plain osage, just beautiful...
Nicely shaped !
-
Youve taken sexy to a new level :clapper:
-
Thanks guy's
I have some coarse grind Turquoise, but it needs to be fine powder for a Arrow indicator.
So I used Grandpaws Hammer Dad gave me years ago.
I spot drilled with a 5/16" forstner bit on both sides
Filled the hole with it and super glue, filed and sanded smooth.
I think I'm going to leave the grip Naked, no leather or twine.
-
I normally don't care for turquoise powder inlays but here I think it fits. I like your idea of a naked handle here. How will you address the handle with the skins, joined at the center or end at the top and bottom of the handle?
-

I was sanding a little wedge today and trying to fit it on the side and I decided it was taking away from the look of the handle, so I decided to not use the arrow rest or a leather grip.
So I don't know yet how to end the skins?
-
Very nice, Mark.
-
Glued on one of the snake skins Today :bigsmyl:
It DID happen wif out pictures Roy
-
I didn't see em.
:wavey:
-
Yeah, how are you going to deal with the skin ends with no handle wrap?
Are snake skins, even with finish on them, something you want to handle repeatedly?
I think the Turquoise looks sharp  Turquoise tip overlays would hide the other skin ends :goldtooth:
-
I'm surprised he used turquoise instead of hot pink:)
He can end the skins a tad above the grip, they can be feathered out on the ends easily.

I'm doing what roy said, cutting it to a point above and below the grip.
And on the tip I'm dead ending it to the Rattles just like a real snake. ;)
NO PINK ROY

Part of me wants to know how it shoots. But part of me doesn’t care because it looks SWEET.
-
I brought it to 24" draw many times but I'm scared to go to 28" :scared:
All my other snakey bows broke before I got this far.
-
She's looking real good, Mark. Snaky bows are tough to tiller and some are hard to keep together. Wishing this one a long, productive life. :archer2:

Take it back an inch at a time 20 pulls per inch.
-
That is looking great!! Fantastic job!
Send it to Roy, he only draw bout 14" so should work well! :biglaugh:
-
-
I assume the bow is shot in since you put the skins on? But your skeered to draw it to 28?
-
Yep
It should be OK
-
What's the worst that could happen?:)
With the looks of the grain on that bow I'll bet she will be fine.
-
Damn thats one nice job you did with the skins Mark
Very elegant how you finished off the ends.
-
Thanks guys :goldtooth:
-
Ah come on, Flem.
I guess it's ok:)
-
I'd find him and give him a big hug if he wasn't hiding in the rain forest down there in the southland :scared:Honestly, I'm not a big fan of snake skin backing. They elicit lots of oohs and ahhhs, like kids looking at a shinny penny at the bottom of a fountain. Mark's application is artistic and natural looking, not like some that look like they are slapped on the back. Having no artistic talent myself, I am impressed at others skills.
-
I look at it like this.
Osage is a awesome bow wood for selfbows and if you are lucky enough that Mother Nature give us something like this, it should be shown to others. I like skins on a snakey stave and I will take it to the Tennessee Classic and MoJam for those who want to see.
I'm not showing off, there are many Bowyers alot better than me. I want it to be a work of Mother natures Art as best I can do with it.
I'm really enjoying working on it and letting you guy's see it happen.
Without Forums like this, very few would see.
I got the edges cleaned up and sand the bow all over Today.
Thanks for watching Guy's :jumper:
And for all the help ;)
-
-
I brought it to 24" draw many times but I'm scared to go to 28"
Ya still skeered?
-
nice looking bow, mark... i don't make this style bow but i just thought of something... i am not sure of everyone's process but should you be shooting the bow also, so that it gets used to the shock at 20" of draw instead of just flexing it all the time up to 28" and then shooting it... or is this not common practice or ever been tried...
-
Some people like to shoot them, and then do a final tiller.
-
Yup what Mark said.
Wooden bows are more finicky than glass bows.

Awesome job! The only issue I can see is if you laid it too near the wrong person it might get shot, or they break their necks trying to get away from it.
-
Thats a work of art, patience and skill. Hats off

That is most excellent Mark!!

Very nice Mark
Sooooo, I know you’ve had it to full draw, but have ya flung an arrows with it?
Is it functional art?
-
I have not shot it, but I'm sure it can be shot.
I thought it would have been more than 35#'s, It seems to be thick enough.

Very Cool. I think the art word fits just fine. Thanks for takin us along.
