Has anyone heard from Barry or Gene ? I had heard they were having health or personal issues keeping them down recently, I don’t want to get into their personal lives but I Sure hope things are better and they can make it to the woods . They Are my hunting hero’s and both have been in my prayers ..

Believe Barry is doing well and hitting the woods but gene has had alot on his plate lately and had to move back to Montana due to his wife having complications and needing 24 hr assistance...very sad ! But hope he gets some treetime I am sure he needs it!!

I've talked to both recently. What Jayrod said.

I appreciate everyone's concern and ask for you all to keep us in your prayers. Thank you. I'll just give some basics for Gene and hope he can add some details if he has time. His wife is not doing well. They have three grown kids and five grandkids to help some but Gene is Donna's primary caregiver 24/7. His major problem is stress and lack of sleep. On top of that he got a total knee replacement on Aug. 5th and has to go to PT 3 times a week still. One positive note is he's recently lost 25 lbs. A lot of people don't realize he hasn't hunted at all for the last two years. Just that fact alone is extremely tough on guys like us.
I'm doing fine basically. I also had some knee issues off and on for the last year but I'm doing much better now. On Sept. 8th my heart went back into AFib for the first time in years. I ended up in the ER for three days/ two nights. I had a "team" of three MDs and a cardiologist all agree on a plan and I seem to be fine now. Unfortunately they found I am now a verified diabetic and need to shoot myself up with insulin twice daily. I can't say it really bothers me other than it's a pain in the butt. They also juggled my meds, took me off a couple and added a couple. I want to publicly mention this. The one insulin prescription they wrote me an Rx for was going to be $198. / mth. I complained about it and they got it down to $160. Then I got checking around and found another brand of insulin (same stuff but different brand) ready?? $12. / month. I personally think that's criminal to charge elderly people $198. when the exact same thing is available for $12. You gotta watch them.
Within the med changes they had to put me "temporarily" back on warfarin (rat poison) which is a blood thinner. So now they tell me I'm a "bleeder." The good news is they told me (the one MD is an avid hunter) I should no longer field-dress deer; no caping heads; no more home butchering; and he even said I probably shouldn't drag big 'ol bucks out myself anymore. Frankly, I'm kinda liking this deal. I'm thinking of milking this deal out even if they take me off the meds. :shaka: The bad news is they have to monitor my blood every three days for awhile. Since the hospital is 20 miles one way and the appointments for tests and the results have been averaging three hours, it pretty much interferes with daily plans. Our season doesn't open until Oct. 1st. so hopefully things will settle by mid-Oct. I normally don't get serious until about the third week of October anyway. Right now I feel up to the task but I may need to adjust some accordingly since I'll need to slow my pace down on entrance/exit.
I anticipate a great season in Iowa and I also have an outstanding hunt planned in south Texas later. So, here's to us all getting the biggest bucks of our lives. Shoot straight and stand upwind of the Chinese virus guys. :goldtooth: BW

Barry, been there done that. Welcome to the Golden years. The guy that coined that phrase is probably still laughing.
I also know what Gene is going through as the primary caregiver to his wife, I went through the same thing with Nancy. When she was ill I wouldn't put her in a care facility. I kept her at home and cared for her 24/7. A Hospice nurse came in twice a week to check her vitals. It can be telling on you. I'll keep you both in my prayers.

I am in the same place as Gene and Ron was. I signed up for better or worse and I am a man of my word. I think God has planned for several of us to be care givers and blessed us with the ability to do so. I feel blessed to have had a wonderful friend and wife for over 50 years and will do what is necessary to help her in her time of need.

Prayers for all the Wensel clan.

Prayers for all of you guys! Thanks for the update!

I had the pleasure to meet Barry last year at Kalamazoo. He signed my copy of Crooked Hat Chronicles, but more importantly he talked to me like I was somebody even though he didn’t know me from Adam. Prayers for both Wensel’s and all of the other care-takers out there.

I’ve always respected Gene but even more so now, with his care of his wife Donna.
Hang in there Barry. FYI my wife is a pharmacist and every day she does what you did on your own - help patients find cheaper drugs that do the same thing as the prescribed one. When she does, a simple call to the Dr usually results in a revised prescription. Nobody should feel bad about asking their pharmacist to do the same, it’s their job.

Thank you For the update! Gives me something more specific to pray about. Good luck this season! :archer:

Gene and Barry's impact on hunting whitetails with traditional gear will not be fully appreciated till long after they are gone. If you were one of the lucky one's who got to meet them or got to share time with them they made a impact on you in some way. These guys probably could have made a fortune off the hunting industry if they wanted to but they stayed true to their beliefs. What a rare thing in today's world. That said I treasure every time I get to come in contact with them by any means even if not in person. They are the last of the best with just a couple others in their class. Let's appreciate them for whatever time God let's us enjoy.

Indeed, Blessed to have shared a table with them both at PBS banquet in San Antonio.

My older brother was at some show, and for some forgotten reason, I wasn't with him. Very unusual. But Barry was there, and my brother bought me a copy of his book, and had him sign it. The inscription read Murray, I hear you suck. Try harder. Barry
I'll treasure that til the day I die.

Well said Marsh Chicken. They are in a class by themselves.

Gene and Barry. Been a long time. Sorry for the problems that have come up for you. We will be praying for you. Hilary and I moved to Wisconsin. No more Skunk River monsters, although the hunting here is pretty good. Best wishes and healing to you guys. Ed Lash

I went through similar experiences with my parents, as I lived the closest when their health deteriorated. Very glad I did it, but it can be very wearing on the caretaker when a loved ones health demands such constant care. It is very hard on on the one that's ill. It is hell to lose your independence.
Much respect and empathy for Gene and his wife.

Gene and Donna were at the house not long ago to watch some UFC fights and tell some great stories . Gene is always in great spirits and his sense of humor is amazing as always. With a little luck he will at least get a week or so during the rut to hunt. Hopefully god will grace him with a huge typical for all his efforts! No need for another giant nontypical like Woody!
