Title: Influence of low clowds on predominant winds
Post by: Fidelios on September 18, 2020, 08:35:22 PM
Hello again! Can cloudy skies with drizzle change wind direction completely?

Yes.
Well, clouds and drizzling rain is a change in the normal weather pattern and any changes in weather can cause all kinds of different variables that can change the wind direction to a different direction from the predominant winds.

Clouds and drizzle coming through on a sunny day would reverse wind currents in hilly or mountainous country.

Not really.  Clouds and drizzle are a function of other air current movements.  They're a result, not a cause.  The wind may change direction, but it's not caused by clouds.  It's caused by other factors, which in turn move the clouds to the prevailing wind direction. Regardless of prevailing wind direction, local topography can cause air currents to swirl, change direction, run counter, etc.

The reason I asked is that the area where I have my treestand has a strong prevalent wind and it changed exactly to the opposite direction when drizzle came  in and the cloud ceiling was low.
