Post by: kennym on September 10, 2020, 09:04:50 AM
Just an FYI - I just ordered more EA-40 and my supplier told me they have increased shelf life to 24 months.

Got an answer quick! Copied from email....

Hi Kenny,

Thank you for being a Smooth-On customer.

EA-40™ Clear Amber Epoxy is an unfilled low-viscosity epoxy adhesive.

Properly stored at room temperature (73°F/ 23°C), Smooth-On® epoxy products have a shelf life of 24 months from date of manufacture in unopened containers.
The shelf life of a material will vary depending on chemistry and variables like exposure to heat or air after opening. Epoxies aren't as sensitive to moisture contamination (compared to a urethane for example) so you may find that when stored properly it can exceed the 24 months, but this of course is dependent on many other variables. We always recommend only to buy the amount you need for your current project.

Here is more information:

Best Regards,

Victoria

I just finally used up and threw out a set of cans of EA 40 I bought in 2010.....I subject them to extreme temperature variances over the years...moved them across the US and back and the stuff has still been working well for the little, non-critical epoxy projects I would use this old EA 40 for (i.e. gluing random stuff in the garage and gluing up hidden tang knives, etc.).

I can tell you that it definitely become less workable after a year, but still useful - so don't throw out your old stuff....just don't glue up a nice bow with it!

Right on Brad, I use it for overlays , you could always put them back on unlike the actual bow...

For sure!

I try to only order enough to get it sold in a few months to solve that problem.  I'm getting it straight from the factory drop shipped to here now so that helps.
