Title: Cucumber topic.
Post by: Buemaker on July 23, 2020, 09:04:44 AM
A trilam is easy to understand, but what if 4 or 5 laminations. What should that be called ? I am planning to make one.

4 should be a quadlam, 5 should be pentlam.

Why so many laminations? What are you hoping to gain from the extra work?

Just to try something different, I am thinking DR. More gluelines may cause less springback when blank is taken out of the form. Must leave enough meat on belly lam for adjusting though. I usually use full lenght lams and taper before glue up.
Sometimes using a reverse taper the last 7-8 inches before nocks.

I would agree, the thinner lams will bend to the form easier and should reduce springback. How much do you think you need for adjusting tiller? I have seen 0.002" scrapes noticeably change the tiller on a self bow. If you get close to start with it sure doesn't take much to fine tune the bend.

Rack of lam(b).

Awesome, that should be the bow name when Bue finishes it.

In a DR with 4 lams I will go with the belly lam 1/4 inch thick in the center and tapered .003 before glue up. I will taper 2 center lams .003 each with one of them having a reverse taper .004 the last 7-8 inches. The bamboo back about 1/8 in center to 1/16 at tips.
So we will see how that ends up.
In a trilam I made the bamboo was tapered as above and center and belly lam tapered .003. That left som adjusting on belly lam.
I’ll post a few pics. In that one I used Lignostone (resin impregnated heat compressed Beech wood) as belly lam. The last one I made had Osage(from Roy) as belly lam. I really like Osage, but difficult to get over here.

I vote for the rack of lam, or maybe the stack of lam.

Over here we have an expression we call «agurk nytt» Translated to English that will be cucumber news. In some periods when there is little new news on TV or other media and they send the same over and over. Or old news or a lot of stuff that most people do not care about. That we call cucumber news.
Since it has been very quite here for some time with not much new I was temted to use the word.
Hope nobody was offended.

Thats interesting phraseology Bue. Is it because cucumbers are not well liked in Norway? or maybe a reference to British journalism style?
In any case I will be interested to see the bow you make

I'v made glass bows with 5 cores. All those lams can give a error in the stack thickness, so hold 1 parallel to grind last to hit stack thickness.
It holds better to the form after glue up and I think it helps the Performance.
On you multi-lam, you will tiller from the belly, so not such a big deal. :)

Beu, For some reason I just cant get the image of a stack of cucumber slices out of my head.   After you get it tillered you should dye the back and belly cucumber green and leave the other laminations white and call it a "cucumber". :biglaugh:

I always looked at it as 2 layers is a backed bow. 3 or more is a composite bow. Cukes are growing in my garden. Jawge
