Title: What game are you hunting, and what is your setup for this season?
Post by: Mike Bolin on July 09, 2020, 10:33:07 PM
With so much negativity going on around us, I feel like it's time to get a fun topic started, so let's talk about our choice of hunting gear and what type of game for the upcoming season(s). Bows, arrows, broadheads, ground blinds or treestands, Deer, Elk, Moose, small game, hogs.  Anything to get our minds on getting back to the woods!

Primary bow for this Whitetail/Turkey season in Indiana will be my 60" Widow PTF, 46#@28", 29" Beman ICS Bowhunter shafts with a standard insets and a VPA 3 blade up front. Total arrow weight is right at 500 grains. Using mostly 15' ladderstands this season. Hunted higher in the past but I've been working on brushing them in and setting up lower for better shot angles.

As a backup bow I had my Widow PLII, 62" and 45#@28". Shoots the same arrow/broadhead setup to the same spot as the PTF out to about 25 yards and I try to keep my shots under 20 yards with 10-15 being my sweet spot! I have always preferred close shots, even more now since having to drop in bow weight. Been hot here for a good bit so most of my practice has been early morning or after 8:30 in the evening. There have been a few local shoots and I've managed to make a few of them.
SO, what game are you hunting and what bow and arrow setup are you planning to use...?

Getting ready for fall whitetails here. I feel like I'm always tinkering but I'm going with a homemade recurve 57# @ 28 and 400 spine Easton fmj with 50 grain brass and a 250 grain cutthroat single bevel. Total arrow will be somewhere between 620 and 650 i'm guessing after I finally finish tuning. I have yet to shoot the single bevel at a deer so I'm pretty pumped to try them this fall.

Not planning on any out of state hunts this year unless I can get in on a group hunt in Texas for pigs and javelina after the first of the year.

Ill be hunting here in southeast OK for pigs, deer, and bear,  with my Great Plains 55# recurve.  Ill be shooting Easton arrows tipped with Ace broadheads for a total weight of 540gr.

I received a Sasquatch special SS from Kirk lavender (yes he is making bows again!)
64 inches /19 inches riser 57#@32
That thing is at the very top of all the bows I ever had.

Will hunt locally and northern Spain and Namibia in August 2021

For deer season here in NC, my bow is a 62" Centaur triple carbon takedown hybrid. It is 45 pounds at my 29" draw. The bow quiver is a Selway mini that holds 4 arrows. This bow is very fast, quiet, and accurate if I do my part properly.

Arrows are 3-Rivers Traditional Only 500 spine cut to 29.5"
I will be using Wensel Woodsman broad heads, with 125 grain brass inserts and 5 grain collars. There will be a two-inch reflective wrap on the arrow shaft behind the broad head. The tail end has a Glory Nock light-up nock in green, plus a 6" custom wrap and three 4-inch feathers. This weighs in at 12 grains per pound. The FOC is very favorable.

I have also tuned an eleven-grains-per-pound arrow using a Gold Tip Velocity 500 shaft, with 75 grain inserts and 160 grain 3-blade VPA heads. Again, great FOC.

Both arrows fly like a laser beam.

I will use this same set up for for javelinas, hogs and bears.

I hunt primarily with my yew Northern Mist Shelton. It is 68" 53# at 28" and is very smooth. I use cedar arrows with 125 grain broadheads. I hunt deer almost exclusively, so this is a great rig for that. Also, my backup bow is a bamboo Shelton with the same specs .

It would be fun to plan and do out of state hunts but finances will never allow that anymore.  I satisfy my self with local white tails, and will be starting out the season with a 47# Toelke Chinook.   :coffee:

Bow of choice is Big River D/R 21st Century clone 60” 65#@27” so @66.5# for me.  Tapered wood arrows @700 grains for Cedars and 860 grains for hardwood.  190 grain VPA terminator or Grizzly Instinct heads.  Paracord String Silencers.  Hogs are what’s for dinner, unless I get lucky and Government land opens up, plus I am drawn for Whitetail.  If no deer then making the 2 1/2 hour drive to Granger, kayaking a couple miles down the San Gabriel and hammock camping to chase Granger hogs.  Wing shooting for pigs PhD level hog hunting cause the pressure is pretty constant and they sleep at a trot!!!  Maybe a 3D or two with some light 630 grain 2315 Easton arrows.

Mike B - those VPA3 wouldn’t be 250 grains would they?

I'll be using my Osage self bow with stone points for Squirrel and using a Great Plains longbow with old Bear heads for deer and Turkey. I use my self bow deer hunting early and switch to the longbow later in the season.

Plans are up in the air. Canada border closing cancelled spring hunt and fall isn't looking good. Looking at a hunt in Portugal, but they may not let us dirty Americans in.  Leave in a few weeks to bowfish for alligators in Florida. Buddies and I drew tags for 8 gators. I'll be shooting a TimberHawk longbow at 66# at 29" and Muzzy Gator Getter Arrows.  Whitetails here in IN with a Stalker Coyote at 61#s.

I’ll be using my Sunset Hill this year with a mix of cedar arrows and gold tip traditional classics.  I haven’t figured out which broadhead I want to use yet, but I’m leaning towards grizzlies.

I’ve also “booked” a three-day “stay-cation” this year to go hunt a remote area of one of PA’s state game lands.  Although deer and bear will be my primary targets, I really want to try to get a lot of small game hunting in as well.  My goal is to get enough “ingredients” to make a nice game pie.  :archer2:

Full length wrap w/4-4” Trad vanes

Springy rest

My favorite tree stand is the millennium lock on. Very comfy and I have no issue sitting all day.

I’ll be hitting the woods at my house with my new Condor longbow from Wild Horse Creek. 48# at my 28” draw with cedar arrows tipped with Zwickey deltas or Magnus I  broadheads. I won’t be doing any out of state hunts this fall but hoping for a javelina hunt in March.

One of my Chad Holm bows will be with me in the Georgia woods and another will be backup !! Deer mostly but if I see a pig at the right time it will be a target for sure. Wood or carbon arrows with Ace, Rib tech, or Deltas up front for a 585 gr arrow. My Georgia experience is limited but I’m still giving it a go. Can’t go like I used to in the woods but not ready to throw in the towel yet. At 68 I’m ready to give it a go......

2020 Java Man Elkheart
51# @ 30"
31 1/4", 500 spine Gold Tip Trads with 125 gr. heads.  I haven't decided what broadhead because I haven't used a 125 grain head in many years.  I tried using a 400 spine with lots of weight up front, but I can't get perfect flight like I do with the lighter spine arrows.  Total arrow weight is a tad under 500 grains, but since I'll be primarily hunting whitetails, a lighter arrow will not be a problem.

Middle Tennessee whitetails and turkeys

Stalker Stickbows 58'' Wolverine SL, 52 lbs @ 28'' (50 lbs at my draw)
Gold Tip Traditional 400s cut to 31'' with 100 grain brass inserts and 150 grain Magnus Stinger broadheads
- Total arrow weight ~ 559 grains
- 160 fps

By bow: black bear, whitetail, feral pig, squirrel, rabbit, coyote
By gun: whitetail (2-day permit hunt), squirrel, rabbit, dove, quail, duck, goose
By muzzleloader: whitetail (one weekend only IF I draw a muzzleloader permit for a certain area) with the option for incidental feral pig

70% of my time will be spent with a bow in hand.  15% with a rimfire for small game in hills country.  10% with a scattergun for birds.  Maybe 5% with a rifle/muzzleloader for permit hunts for whitetail.

My bow of choice is my custom Sarrels Sierra 2-piece with antler tips from one of my deer shot with my 1-piece Sierra.  I made it into a grab and go travel case which is pretty darn handy for trucking all over the state and occasionally out of state.  No out of state options are on the books for this go around.

Am most fortunate to have nine different setups to choose from. All nine are designed to be lethal and I have very hi confidence in each one.

Have narrowed it down to a Mountain Monarch and a Bob Lee Ultimate for the majority of deer hunts…may still be thinking about the Stalker Wolverine…will likely be toting either the TimberGhost and Covert Hunter on the short blind hunts.

My primary bow will be a 66" Widow PLII, 48# At 30" with Easton 2018's and 150 gr Snuffers. Back up bow is a 64" Kodiak,43# at 30" with Easton 2016's and the same heads. Really like this thread.

My back up to BR LB is 60” MOAB 62#@27 so @63.5# for me.  Tapered Maple @700 grains with 160 grain Snuffer heads or 2215 with same.  This bow is semi-retired, but takes a dozen arrows to get back into groove.  This is my avatar bow.

Most likely a Robertson primal longbow 57lbs shooting Wapiti tapered cedar shafts.  I normally shoot a delta 4 blade  out of it and still may but I’ve got some grizzlys to try as Zwickey is worrying me with the inability to get the 4 blades in production again.  Gotta be honest I like them pretty good so perhaps they get the nod. We will see.
I’d like to use my PSA 64lbs a little too, 400 spine bemans with a magnus stinger. The bow has sentimental value as my kids names are on it. Like to get one or two with it again.

Same setup as last 3 years. 64” 3 pc TD longbow built in my own shop. Be man 400s at 30”  with stock  inserts and VPA 200 grn 3 blades up front . 48@28

She has done me well on whitetails...

Ill start with my 42@28 very custom Thunderchild shooting GT 500s with a 250 grain  VPA 3blade out front. The thread author helped me tune this setup and it has given me great confidence. If the guys down in Nixa hold to schedule, I may finish the season with a 64" 43@28 PL II. Ill shoot the first legal deer that come along and any dumb enough limb chickens.

I fell into 19 of the VPA Terminator 190 grain heads that will be riding up front this year.  With possible Grizzly Instinct original run 190 grain riding shotgun.

I'll be chasing goats in the hills as always (as in feral, not mountain) and probably start seriously trying for deer plus whatever comes my way chasing either of above (foxes, rabbits, hares and pigs). We can hunt year round here, so gotta be ready for anything at any time.

Most likely will be toting my 58" 1970 Root/Shakespeare Warrior in 55lb with full length GT Warriors in 500 with 100gr brass insert, 25gr brass collar and 200gr Outback Stealth broad heads for a tickle over 600gr.

Or perhaps my 70" 50lb own design boo backed cypress longbow which shoots the same arrows.

Dang, I have to decide already?!

I'll just be chasing deer this year. I've got a lot of bows to play with but I'll probably only take two out in the woods. My main go to bow will probably be my Stillwater Aberdeen, 60" and 57@29, so probably just a fuzz over that at my draw length. Shooting GT Trads, 400 spine with 200 grain Grizzlies up front.

My second set-up will be my Abbott longbow, 66" and 62@30, so about 60 for me. Will be shooting GT Trads 500 spine, again with 200 grain Grizzlies up front. I'm tempted to try some of the Grizzly Instincts this year. We'll see...

I will be chasing Wyoming pronghorns next month.   After that I will be back home here in PA for the rest of the season chasing deer and bears.   My setup is a 62" 53lb at my 27" draw Black Canyon 3 Piece Longbow.  For arrows I shoot Gold Tip 400 Valkyrie Xt with 50 grain brass inserts and 3 blade 175 VPA heads.

Well, to start with (if things open up) some foam fellows.... LOL  Shooting an A&H 3 piece and a Widow PLX both at 66" and 39# shooting 600 GT Ultra lights with 100 gr. points.  I am also shooting AD Stingers (yellow) with 125 gr points out of the A&H.

For the real season it will be deer when I feel like it and possibly fall turkeys.  I'll be using the following:

#1.  My PL Greybark 64" 45#@ 28".  This bow is set up with some older parallel carbons with Scirocco BH's glued
onto 125 gr steel BH adaptors 3 5" feathers.

#2.  My old Widow MA, 45# @ 28" also shooting AD Stingers with the same BH setup as above.

#3.  Since our draw weight has been reduced to below 45# I may try one of the above listed 39# draw weight
bows but keep the shots close.

Good thread Mike, thanks.
Haven’t settled on a set up yet , after a years worth of cancer surgery and treatments , I had a friend build me a 64” R/D longbow 45@28 it seems to like a 2016 and Zwickey Eskimo. But my normal ole reliable setup is a 58lb 60” Widow SAV shooting 2020,s and zwickey deltas. I hope I can work back into it by September and am having some problems with shooting the lighter weight but with time, I’m sure it will come, but I bet I’m back with my old friend the widow.
I’d like to do a out of state whitetail hunt and hopefully can swing it. I’ll be in one of my lone wolf assaults  I’m sure.
Ive been scouting just to learn a new area but it’s so dang hot I can’t go as much as I want.

I’m hunting Ohio Whitetails, squirrels and fall turkey.  I will be also hunting Colorado in November for a plains mule deer hunt. I will be the first bow hunter on the ranch in several years.  The boom stick hunters have averaged 195” over the last several seasons.  I’m not holding my standards that high.

Bow:  I have a Stickflinger being built as I type.

This year the big game I will be hunting will be mule deer and elk. I have a deer tag in Utah and 3 elk tags. I have a cow elk tag and a archery elk tag for Utah. I also drew a late season archery bull tag in Arizona. Outside of big game I will hunt rabbits, grouse, turkey and what ever else is legal.
I have a few set ups I will use. My first is my Big Jim Buffalo 60" 54@ my 28" draw. I am shooting 605 gr.  Carbon express Heritage arrow with grizzlys, woodsmans or snuffers depending on what I'm hunting. I will be shooting miss Hope(St. Judes) in August and is a JT Traditional Archery's APOLLO - 62 inch - 50@28.  Arrow at set up will be determined apon shooting her.

I can't argue with success.   My standby is a 54# Brackenbury Drifter.  Wes Wallace tells me it's older technology and not quite as efficient as it could be.  But, it's quiet ...  and effective.

I like cheating on arrows.  My days of (warped) woodies are over.  I'm shooting ICS Bowhunter arrows with 150 grain Mangnus Stingers.  (Shooting carbon is cheating to me, but ... hey... they stay straight and I got it from the top dog at Compton's that I was "okay" with carbon for being "traditional" )...

For whitetail, I've been shooting with bleeder blades.  That gives these old eyes a little more blood to follow.  But, last year, I didn't need to trail any deer:  all of them when down in sight.

I should have signed up to go west for Elk.  My mistake.  I only have so many of those hunts left in me.  Had a blast last year thanks to advise from John Cholin.  He put me onto Absaroka Beartooth Outfitters.  My son and I sure didn't regret that tip.

Good luck everyone.

Good luck.

I'll be hunting moose here in Alaska with a 54# recurve that I made and GT traditionals with 200 gr. Grizzly up front. I will be hunting caribou also but hopefully with a ASL that I'm in the process of building. I'm shooting for 50# at my draw length, I hope to shoot Ace 165gr standards for caribou. I will be hunting whitetail on my Arkansas property with a FHLB at 45# GT traditional and Ace broad heads. Our archery moose season starts in 16 days but those counting?

Will be looking to get my first deer and hog trad harvests. 7th season only trad hunting and to this point have only taken squirrels.  But this is my year!

Bow is a lh quilted maple toelke chinook 58 inch 50lbs @ 26 inches. Arrows are cedar shafts with trad vanes and am not sure of my broadhead choice just yet. Good luck to all!

Still on the fence about trad vs compound for this year. I may start with trad and switch after rifle season. Bear Montana ~55# @29". Easton aluminum 2018s with Zwickey Eskimos.

Drop the wheels and dont look back. As long as you own a cane, you'll walk with a crutch.

Mike, I had posted earlier on I wasn’t sure about bow selection yet, due to some health issues, but I’ve found I can shoot my normal 60” widow SAV, 58 lb and a 580 gr. 2018 with a zwickey delta . I will be hunting whitetails and bear, and possibly hogs, but It looks like no out of state hunts this year though.

Tim, that is a nice bow. I have one just like it in 40#. Also, I like the knife in the picture. It looks simple and and ready for business. Who is the maker?

Sam it’s a Great Eastern Cutlery made in Titusville PA. There local so I try to buy them but more importantly there very serious people about quality American old school manufacturing the way it should be. I would highly recommend looking at them. The prices are very reasonable also. They make beautiful traditional slip joints also that are nothing short of perfect. I took a tour there a few years ago and wasn’t even planned. I popped in and Bill the owner gave my daughter and I a factory tour at every station.

The top one is the H-40 and the middle one is slightly smaller and is the H-30 I believe. I like the top one but the middle one is a bit small for my paws but makes a wicked fishing knife. Or a great knife to mount to a back quiver which is my plan for that one.

Africa in July was cancelled due to Covid.  Worked out well for me as I had emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix early June, so I wouldn't have been shooting a bow yet anyway due to surgeons instructions.  Have plenty vacation left for deer hunting 😀.  Will split time between my farm in Missouri and the place I just bought here in Indiana.  Couple candidates for a ride in the truck hanging around the new place, excited about the new farm.

I'm shooting Dads old MA2 with the original limbs for that one, 62 at 29, 64 inch limbs.  .340s and big Snuffers.

Next couple years gonna get busy, Africa put off till 2021, working on AK moose for '21 too, looking at several possibilities for '22.

Also never thought I'd see GECs on here!  Discovered these a couple years back....man it's good I dont live near the factory store!  Dont "need" more knives but I had to pick up a 2 blade #23 in woodland micarta for a belt knife.  GEC quality is something else!

I have an exciting fall ahead with a quality high country mule deer hunt here In Colorado and a Shiras Moose hunt In Wyoming after 21 years of patient applying.

The bow from my collection getting the nod this year is my 15th Anniversary Bighorn Ramhunter Longbow built in 1992.  It is 60#s @ 28”.  I’m shooting footed Surewood Douglas fir shafts, made up by me using True North Arrows products.  Tipped with Zwickey Black Diamond Delta two-blade broadheads.

Attached are pictures of my set-up and my first choice moose found while scouting.

Had a pig hunt cancelled during to a family emergency.  Focusing on whitetail.

Using a  big jim Thunderchild. May switch up later if desired.  As far as arrows, they're carbon with instinct broadheads.  Cant remember the weight but they fly straight and are heavy enough

Thought it would be a BW MA 50#, but for some reason I started shooting my Stickflinger and it is shooting really well, so who knows. I am blessed to have a few bows I really like. Blessed and cursed, how do I decide?

Probably 2117 with two hundred grain heads.
Only whitetails on the schedule.

Because of my job out of state, I'll more than likely only be hunting one day out of my regular Oregon early archery season. And depending on when the commercial crab season starts, I might not get much out of the late archery season. I'll be using my 64" blacktail--60# @ 29" with 31.5" goldtip velocities tipped with 100 grain inserts and 200 grain cutthroats. Hoping to find a pig hunt while in California!

64” BW PLX ,51# at my draw

I will be hunting whitetails, but may take a shot at a tree rat or bunny rabbit if the opportunity presents itself.

Same setup as last year:

My dad’s old Ben Pearson Raider, 48” and 39# at my short draw length. Just put a new string on it to raise brace height up to 9.5” where it belongs, and it is crazy quiet!

Arrows are GT Trad 600s with 125 gr. Magnus Stinger 4 blades riding up front. 561 gr. total weight.

This year I’m planning on hunting exclusively from the ground in natural ground blinds wearing a ghillie.

Only new item that will be going with me is a Palmer Bowmate quiver—love not having a quiver mounted on the bow!

Iowa whitetail and turkeys. I’ll be using my Holm-Made Shrike 49@28”-64” and see if I can’t stick something for Chad. Wapiti tapered cedar 55-60 shafts and woodsman broadheads are flying great out it. My Holm-Made River Runner with Goldtip 500s and woodsman 150gr is my backup bow this year.

My first time hunting in the east, and first time with a bow in 30 years. No more PSE Mach Flite 4, this time it’s a self made fired hardened hickory self bow, 52# at 29”.  Gold tip traditional 400 arrows with 170g Grizzly single bevel broadheads.

Excited to be hunting again, anxious about learning how to tree stand hunt at 61 years old though. Season opens Friday.

I've had to drop some weight because of shoulder problems so I need to change my earlier post. Now instead of chasing deer and rabbits with a 48# PLII I'm going with a 40# at 30" Frankenbow with longbow limbs, 2018's and 165gr. Hills Hornets complete the package.
