In Honer of Damon Howatt Bows
I will call it "Orange Orange"
60" Recurve shooting for 40/45# 1-3/4" Caramel glass I got from Kenny, It will have snake skins also.
1st one off the form.
I still need my side washers and a 6" wide base to keep the lower form straight .
Here are my Victims--Left to right
All this will be Orange when finished, the picture don't show very well
Thuya Burl
Thuya Burl--not going to use this one
Dymondwood Cocobolo from Rosewood
Some knife scales from Hawaii--don't remember what they are
Not going to use the Thuya behind the scales
Bamboo floor
(https://i.imgur.com/hz6n9K8.jpg)
I cut my boo floor 1-3/4+ and use a 24" scale clamped to the edge sander, run my pieces threw and keep bumping the straight edge in until I get to 1-3/4" wide
(https://i.imgur.com/o4JoEku.jpg)
I use my Grizzly Baby Drum sander to get the bulk of thickness and run them threw this thickness sander "The Hog" Laugh if you want to, this little thing is very very accurate, it get's all the snipe and bumps out. I can grind the glue side of fiberglass and find high spots only taking off a couple thousands. I do my tapers, parallels, overlays and all on it.
I laid out my radius on the riser pieces. That's all for today

2 parallels and 2 tapers .002 + some

Wow Mark. I use similar “use what ya got” methods. Lol
I do the same for lam width, but use a drum in my drill press and a piece of angle iron instead of a straight edge. That way I can also do thickness with the same setup.
But I’m really liking “the hog”. I think I have pretty much all the parts and pieces to build one. Would love to see a few more pics.
Oh yeah....also looking forward to the rest of the build. :biglaugh: Always wanted a Howatt, but it was the Hi Speed that intrigued me the most.

I have a 1962 DH High Speed 58" with green glass---I making mine 60"
Google The Hog thickness sander--my motor came off a Industrial Fan I had many years ago.

-
Thanks Mark. I’ll check it out.
The 54” Hi speed was the one I was after. Could never find one in good condition in my budget. But love the teal glass on that one. Just screams classic bow.
-
If you buy one for what they want, you should be able to get your money back when you are a old fart.
-
Max, Thanks for posting the lead on the Hog ... I’ve been looking for a narrow surface sander for years! What RPM is the motor you are using ?
-
1725 RPM

My patterns for a stripe
(https://i.imgur.com/9Kn1697.jpg)
I got my pieces sanded and ready for glueup
2 pieces black glass and a boo center .125 total thickness
(https://i.imgur.com/UlSsOdw.jpg)
I glued the riser up last night.
Check those Knife scales out for overlays
(https://i.imgur.com/r7HX13R.jpg)
All cleaned up
(https://i.imgur.com/t0u5uDc.jpg)
My super glue ran out today
I don't know what you guy's do but I pry out the bottom and snip close to the top and get the tube out of there, still plenty left for more gluing

I will show you my pattern sander
3/4" thick x 6" wide steel plate I bored a hole for a bearing on the mill and turned a rub collar (same O.D. as the 60 grit on the roller) in the lathe.
Back when I had my Machining equipment.
I use it in my drill press I had for ever
(https://i.imgur.com/ob0Jaj9.jpg)
I bought my Ridgid oscillating Edge/belt sander from Home Depot, I got the floor display for 100.00 and this is all I used.
I made a shaft (with 3 flats at the chucking area so it would not slip in the chuck) to drive the belt
(https://i.imgur.com/1TX5xWm.jpg)
I got it chucked up and squared to the table, Ready to go
The 24" long belt beats the hell out of any drum sander or robo sander.

Nice post Max. Thanks for sharing.
I like the wood combo!
-
Time to make a Template for the riser.
I use tape in key places and use a feeler gauge to find the gaps until the gaps are pushed down
(https://i.imgur.com/piXDCOe.jpg)
My riser is not long enough so I have a 1/4" stack of glass and wood below the template
It's fitting tight now.
I put down some plastic wrap and butter up the template, I think Bue does something like this
(https://i.imgur.com/imvEuwg.jpg)
-
Lookin good Mark! You gonna make Mojam this year? If there is one?
-
Tn. Classic Canceled
MoJam Canceled
Stupid virus
-
Damn you virus
-
The riser was not wide enough so I added some thin pieces of hard rock maple (dyed orange) almost all of this will be gone.
The 2 pieces under the riser are the belly ramps sanded flat a glued back together for overlays
(https://i.imgur.com/sTqAGng.jpg)
Belly ramps on the riser.

The bow glue up will be Monday :)
-
Looking good
-
I like how you put that pattern sander together Mark
I think you might have inspired me to build an edge sander with a 2hp motor I have sitting idle
-
My edge sander is The grizzly 6 x 80 G0512
look at the parts, the drive roller is 4" round #P0512006 for $74.75 and mounts to the motor, would be a good start for the money, it would cost more to have it made here.
you could get other rollers too.
The only thing is how to make the tracking part.
That's why I use the belt assembly from the Rridgid oscillating belt sander, that part is $100.00 I think?
A bench tool grinder could work too, standing on end?
I have a nice one laying around I never use, I need to make something out of that.

I got it glued up Yesterday
I cooked it at about 130*
(https://i.imgur.com/x3vzlfW.jpg)
I got all the buggers off and cleaned up the sides
the nocks are at the bottom of the blue tape
(https://i.imgur.com/vWpy8Ds.jpg)
I print out my limb profile
(https://i.imgur.com/KUplSbt.jpg)
I draw a centerline very accurately on the back of the bow before glue up.
I also check my form for straightness end to end.
I cut out little triangles down the centerline of the template so I can see the centerline on the back of the bow and glue them down with wood glue.
I can't wait to see this one finished, It's going to be very pretty ;)
-
That should be a nice one. :)
-
Thanks Bue ;)
-
I take it outside to remove most of the bulk on the limb width with 36 grit, then to the edge sander to finish it up.
All finished on the width and filed in the nocks, removed the tape.
Ready for overlays and underlays.
-
Looking good Mark.
I’m curious to see how much of that yeller wood remains when finished. I have it pictured in my head....
I remove limb width the same way, except I use a flap disc on my grinder. I alway make sure the disc is spinning towards the tips in case it should grab a fiber.
-
I think a little bit 2 or 3" from the fades
-
I cut and ground the over/under lays
(https://i.imgur.com/CPXo49I.jpg)
I got the tips put on today and braced it, about 5/5-1/2"
-
Worked on the tips Yesterday and glued the riser overlays on
(https://i.imgur.com/fhkAmR2.jpg)
Now for the belly underlays
(https://i.imgur.com/ZXMT5YZ.jpg)
I got it fitting like I want so I glued it up
(https://i.imgur.com/PrZ22rf.jpg)
Belly lams glued on

Coming along nicely, them tips will look great.

Great attention to detail!

The riser after under/overlays glued on
(https://i.imgur.com/ekyR8iA.jpg)
Time to grind in the site window,I get all I can with the edge sander.
I use the drill press with these carbide bits (for fiberglass) and coated with something
(https://i.imgur.com/UB2cX5W.jpg)
Here are 2 old pictures of the way I do it.
I raise the table up on the drill press and push the riser threw like a CNC man, many passes and raise the table up again until I get what I want.
The last bit is 1/8" Radius
(https://i.imgur.com/LFSLF7h.jpg)
I got the back and belly profiled and both sides also.
Just need to round all the corners over and get it shaped.
Starting to look like something now
(https://i.imgur.com/EH6914o.jpg)
-
Coming along nice Mark. Love the color combo
-
Love that combo
Did you ever had issue with fiberglass on the edge using a drill press on the sight window?
-
Those bits where did you get them? And do they need hi speed to work good?
And that bow is looking good !
-
Lookin' really sweet there, Max! What draw weight are you aiming for?
-
Nice Mark!
Thanks for sharing your techniques and innovative tools/solutions :notworthy:
I wish I could use my drill press like you do, but my tapered chuck wants to fall out any time I put a perpendicular force on the bit
-
Thanks Bvas
Z-- These burs are made for cutting fiberglass.
you can feel the difference when you get to the fiberglass but it goes threw it easy.
When you break threw the back of the riser you need to slow down unless you have overlays on.
Stic I use the same speed that I had for using the pattern sander, the bits look like they would make a ruff cut but it makes a smooth
here is where I got them, there are only 2 of the 1/4" shank on that page, I got both ;)
http://jpaulfennell.com/Raspburs.html
Ken it's at the very beginning of the post 40/45#
Flem-- take the chuck out make sure the taper surface is smooth (no burs) and up in the hole also.
open the chuck up like for max bit size ( so the 3 jaws are not sticking out) , put it in the freezer over night, swing the table out of the way, have a heavy hammer and a piece of hard wood, get the chuck out of the freezer, and as fast as possible get the chuck in the hole, hold it up with the hard wood and drive it up hard with the hammer.
If it won't stay in after that the taper was not cut precise enough.
Thanks guy's
-
I have it all shaped except the over/underlays.
The Thuya Burl really clogs the sand paper up fast, I'v been scraping the wood with a razor blade more than sanding.
-
(https://i.imgur.com/8YkJIS3.jpg)
7-3/4
(https://i.imgur.com/7WIqTMf.jpg)
-
Nice progress here Max, that’s a very good looking wood combo!
-
Thanks Z
I pulled it to full draw today #55, I missed my draw weight, but this is the first one off the form, next one will give me the stack numbers.
I'v been shaping the over/underlays and sanding and sanding the whole riser, 120,220,320,400 grit to get all the scratches out, I hope.
I thinned down some Shellac and MY BLOOD, Don't take a hit of this
I put a couple coats on, looking good

Snake skins go on tomorrow
-
wow that is looking great!. Looks good on the tree too.
-
Thanks bigbob2
I got the snake skins out and use some masking tape to get the scales off.
Then I soaked them in water until the were soft, dried them off good and used some Titebond 3 on the skins.
All glue on.
I got a dress on that girl now :bigsmyl:

-
Mark, you do mighty fine work bro!!!
-
Man them snakes looking good.
-
Thanks guy's
-
I'm getting ready to clear coat it.
I use a 1/8" dowel I get from Lowes 36" long and cut a short piece, drill a 1/8 hole in a lam scrap and into the riser site window about 3/16" and super glue it in.

Well Hell, First time I got runs from VHT. :knothead: I used clear gloss and now I need to wait 7 day for it to cure, Bummer July 20th untill I can sand it some more. :knothead:

That looks sharp Mark. Color combo is spot on.
Looks like ya got a little orange peel. I had the same problem with the gloss VHT. I never did figure out how to get it to lay down flat. I had no problems with the satin, but gloss was a whole different animal. That is why I finally broke down and went with Tbird.
-
I think I'm going to finish it up with the Matt clear
-
Really fine work there Mark
What kind of snake was that?
-
Water snake I got at a swap meet :bigsmyl:
Thanks Flem
-
Those skins really compliment the colors in the woods used, Mark. Very nice.
-
Yeah I'v been saving those skins and the Thuya burl and the knife scales for a while.
Thanks Pat
-
Thanks for sharing.
