I just got a very sad phone call. Dale Dye fell down a stairs yesterday, broke his neck and has passed away. He was not only one of the best bowyers ever, but a very good man. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. Never owned on of his bows but respected his reputation and contribution to the traditional community immensely.
Robertson, Miegs, Asbell, Silvertip(Shafer), Strunk, Brackenbury, Schultz and Dye. Some passed on and some still with us, however these guys all helped carry traditional archery through the lean years with the utmost professionalism and craftsmanship. Thank you for your contribution to the sport Dale. RIP

This is a true loss to traditional bowhunters. Not only was he a world class craftsman but a great human being. Dale made at least six bows for me over the years. Every one was a work or art. One had ELEVEN different kinds of woods in it. I recently mentioned to someone how he and I joked about the fact I killed my Sable in Zimbabwe with the same bow I used to shoot carp with. Prayers to all his family and friends. bw

I had the opportunity to shoot with Dale, years ago at some local 3D shoots. I even managed to get flighted with him and a couple other shooters who were leading or closely trailing the leaders of the pack once or twice years ago. I used to shoot hot pink fletches and pink nocks to aid in tracking arrow flight and recovery from the neighbor's pasture/gopher fields.
I got a summer job up in Alaska and was able to come back and order a Trails End "Good Medicine" bow from Dale. His shop was close enough, that I was able to drive down to his shop to place my order in person and visit again for some final fitting in the grip. When I picked up the my finished bow he smiled and razzed me a little, he told me he had just about signed Made for "Pinky" on the riser.

Life, school, and work led to fewer shoots, but I would still see Dale at 3D events a few more times over the years. He seemed to always have a big smile on, was warming and easy to be around. I can picture him with his ball cap and backquiver on at a 3D event. And, i can picture him in his shop showing me my bow and some of the other bow projects he was working on. He will be missed.
Rest In Peace Dale

A tragedy. I never met him or even saw one of his bows, except in pictures. All I ever heard was very positive.

Very sad news indeed. A Trails End Recurve was my first custom bow. Made in 1998 with several more to follow. I always enjoyed our conversations over the phone. You will be missed “my friend”.

Dale gave me the second bow he ever built. It appeared to be made by a very experienced bowyer. Very impressive. The bad news is it was right around 80# at 28". I loaned it to a strongman neighbor of mine, who loaned it to a buddy of his, who loaned it to a buddy of his, etc. I haven't seen it since..... In all the years he made bows professionally, he very seldom advertised. Word of mouth kept him behind....

Blue skies ahead Dale! R.I.P.
-
very sad news indeed. I have always admired his bow, and truly regret not ordering one from him when we spoke some 8 or so years ago. RIP to a legend.

Prayers for dales family. RIP Dale. Blessings.

Hate to hear this. I had him make me one when I was poor. He let me pay for it on a payment plan. He told me to keep up with the balance owed and let him know when it was paid off. He said it was one of few left hand bows he had made in one piece. Glad I kept it. Just sorry I did not make it a little lighter poundage since I've recently caught this old age disease. Always enjoyed talking to him.
-
Dale made a one piece bow for me in 2005, I still shoot it today very nice bow! I love his handle style quite unique! He was a good man and loved to talk! RIP Dale!
-
Dale was the real deal, a great humble man with artistic talent and a great bowyer. He will surely be missed. The first bow pictured in this thread is my old Dale Dye recurve. That's one I wish I had back.
-
I met Dale in 1986 when I purchased my first bow from him. He was a master artist, a kind and gentle person, and one of the finest bowyers in existence. Simply put, in my opinion, he produced the Stradivarius of all recurve bows. We became good friends and arranged to meet a few times. Dale always went the extra mile for a client and never, never cut corners on his product. I spoke of him with the highest regard and respect to everyone who I knew was looking for another recurve. He told me if I kept sending him clients he would call me his "East Coast Rep", and some time later he put that on a bow he built for me. In 2018 I asked him to build me another one piece bow even though he said he was retiring. I persisted and he built the bow, and wrote on it " my last one piece bow". that is the kind of guy he was.
After he fell and broke his hip I called him about twice a month to chat. All the conversations went the same way. first we complained about our aches and pains, then how we had to shoot lighter weights and then Dale would start telling stories and we ended the conversation laughing. We were on the phone FRIDAY APRIL 24th, talking about turkey hunting. Dale saw good in just about everything. the traditional community lost one of its greatest, and there is a new star in the heavens. Rest in peace Dale.

Rest in peace Dale...prayers lifted up for the family.

A true gentleman to talk to and a builder of beautiful, sweet shooting bows. His bows are true works of art.
You set the bar high for other bowyers. You will be missed.

I met Dale in Jay Massey's Moose John River base camp while helping Jay out back in September of 93'. I ran into one other time at the Coon Rapids, MN Shoot back in June of 95'. He was a great bowyer and wonderful guy. RIP

I’m very sorry to hear this. He was truly a great man.
I had a long distance relationship with him and considered him a friend.
I learned of Dale from Barry Wensel who years ago sent me a picture of his bow that Dale built for him.
Dale built me a magnificent bow with 2 sets of limbs.
I have a great photo of him which I will post after work today.
Rest In Peace Dale
