Hey all,
Been thinking of picking up a decnt hat for summer or spring wear and came across this Packer Hat. I have never seen one other than in a catalog.
Are there many out there that wear this hat? Is the brim short enough to shoot your bow? How would it be as a summer hat? If you have any pics of it where the size of the brim can be seen, how about posting it?
Thanks for the help.
Nala
I wear one, have been wearing it for about 10 years now.I use mine mainly for fly fishing tho,not hunting. The brim to me is too stiff to use while bowhunting and if I can even "feel" the string touching a brim of a hat it throws my concentration off.Great hats tho, tough as nails, waterproof, but just a little warm in hot weather......I'd post a pic,but they're all with trout and fly rod and not acceptable here, but I'll PM a few pics if ya want.
hey nala i bought one a couple of weeks ago.the brim is fine for me i dont know how it will be in warm weather the cloth is kind of oily and makes me sweat alot (hope i spelled that right) i dont know how to post pics yet but i hope this helps.
Yes I do have a packers hat about 15 years and they are great. The brim is ok for me when shooting however it is somewhat stiff as mentioned. One thing I would also like to mention...buy a bigger size then you need as they do shrink....bowdoc
Yep, hot in the summer and the inside hat band doesn't soak up the sweat well.
I used one for several years and found the brim to be good, but as Bowdoc said they do shrink and mine is too small now but I will get another one sometime...Glenn...
Had mine about a year now and like it fine. Use it for work and not shooting. Sweat some when its warm out but it shines when its raining.
Have one. Hot in warm weather. Shrunk some and the stiffness makes it hurt my head when I put it on. Filson makes great hats BUT the sizing is very inconsistent. Don't mail-order one. Go somewhere that you can try them on. If you want a Filson, go with the shelter cloth intead. Softer lighter material.
I got a Tilley hemp hat for my elk hunt last Sept. Really like it. Good head band for sweat. Turns rain pretty well. Not too hot at all.
I live about 7 miles from Filson main store and factory here in Seattle....Here is what the old store manager told me several years ago...When you buy a Filson hat, make sure two fingers width will fit between your forehead and the inside rim.The hat will be a little loss fitting at first, but pending on how much you wear it with time it will shrink to the sweetest fit...great hats and as mentioned above bit warm in the summer......bowdoc
I've worn mine in Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Adirondacks, Nebraska, Florida, and all the time in PA. Brim does not bother me. As mentioned, it can be warm.
Very HOT.
I have been adorned by one for years. All of the above statements are true, but I would like to add two things. 1. If you put your knee into and pull real hard your hat will stretch some back to the size of your knob. 2. If you wear it for weeks on end in hot weather on a canoe trip, when you scratch your head your fingers will smell like toe. After that initial breakin period anyone who puts your hat on will also smell like toe, your toe. If you soak it with Aqua Velva or Old Spice it will smell like a French toe.
Bought one for fly fishing, works good there. If I weren't rear deep in a cold stream I guess I'd just set fire to my hair.
I wear one mainly when its raining. Would not wear it in too warm of weather.
Treat it with the Filson wax that comes with it and you have the finest rain hat there is.
I took the lining and gortex out of an old pair of Danner boots and cut it to fit in the top of the hat and glued it in with barge cement for some extra warmth in the cold winter rain.

I wore one all the time until I ran across a nice felt Stetson on the bargain shelf. Now I wear it about 1/2 the time. Here is mine with a sprig of oak leaves as a "laurel" for a successful hunt.
I have one and wear it when the weather is damp to wet if it's cold I wear a Peruvian chullo under it.
Great hats but not for summer. just bought my second and bigger cause they seem to smaller
I'm with Tim, mine's too hot for almost the whole year here if you're moving around, not bad for stand sitting in the fall but i take it off to walk to and from
