Title: suggestions on an economical blind????
Post by: Jarrod Feiner on April 15, 2008, 05:36:00 PM
I'm heading to Africa this summer and I want to be familiar with shooting out of a blind.

I'm an open-country ground hunter, and will not likely use the blind very much after the practice sessions preparing for the Africa trip, so I don't want to invest too much money in it.

Any recommendations for an economical blind that is tall enough to shoot a longbow?

Too, how tall should a blind be for shooting trad equipment? I'm seeing 68" as a pretty standard size. Is 68 tall enough?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Howdy, Jarrod!  I know when you start shooting out of a blind the first time, the hardest thing to get used to is the "tunnel vision effect" of shooting from the dark interior, through a hole, into the bright outside.  You gotta practice that so it doesn't throw you off.  Things appear either further/closer than they really are in that situation.  Also you need to practice shooting off your knees, which you are probably already used to since you are a open country hunter, but you need to practice shooting while sitting on a short stool/bench, which you may not be used to.  In either case, the 68" will be plenty, but standing up and shooting from in the blind will be very tight.  Hope this helps.
So, when you heading overseas?  We might stop and see you if you are around during the last two weeks of July...

Try shooting out of a double horse trailer with blanket covered rear opening. Cut a hole in the blanket to shot through.

I will never get used to blinds ...!

Hey Kevin, how you?

I'm glad that 68" will work. There is one that I found at Cabelas that was what I was looking for price-wise. Yea, I have heard stories of "tunnel vision" screwing up people unfamiliar with blinds.

I'm hunting in early July, so the timing would be swell to visit. I could pick you up at SFO airport (I'm 15 minutes away) and we could get some grub or something. Let me know.

Are you heading back to Hawaii? One of these years I'll be bidding on that Hawaiian hunt. One of these days....

Stay well, thanks for the info, and keep in touch.

Hi Jarrod

I just ordered a Groundmax Escape blind from Cabelas.  $100 plus shipping.  A friend of mine already has one, and they are nice and roomy, and easy to set up (if you ever use it for turkeys).  The problem with the 60"x60" blinds is they are almost to small to draw a bow in.  This one works much better.

BTW  Will you be at the Trad Shoot next weekend?  Hope to see you if you are.  Would like to hear more about your Africa hunt.  Also, you can check out my new Morrison.   :D

Take care,

Mark

Weekend Warrior,
Thanks! I'll check that one out. I appreciate the advice on this sort of thing. Believe it or not I know less about tree stands.

Mark, Well now, I'm bumping into friends here. Nice. I'll check out the blind you suggested. Thanks.

Mark, Either I'm going to chase hogs or go to the trad shoot. It will depend upon my energy level by the end of the week. A Morrison! You turd! Is it their recurve?
Sean M. just placed an order for another Morrison longbow--all the bells and whistles too . I got vicarious sticker shock when he showed me the bill. I can't wait to see it, and being a lefty like Sean, and shoot it.

Good to hear from you.

Forget the blind, make a shooting wall.  like a blind but just the front.  Leave openings like the blind will have in Africa.  make it out of plywod or scrap cardboard, whatever you have around.  If you are not gonna use it after Africa, why buy a blind.. one that probably will not be like the one you are shooting from there ?

Jarrod,
Cabela's makes a one in their Lighting Series that is real good, and fairly economical, I think I picked mine up for under $200.00.
How has life been?

Jarrod, I would STRONGLY suggest you take a look at the Ardisam Yukon Tracks blinds.  I had an Enforcer which was HUGE - big enough for two stickbow hunters to hunt in comfortably, side by side.  They're also super easy and quick (seconds) to set up and take down, and are made with quality materials.  Their biggest, most expensive blind (Enforcer) is $150.00 with all the bells and whistles.  The windows are also very, very large and easy to shoot out of.  I sold my Enforcer to a good friend and I'm waiting on my Enforcer Elite to get here.  Here's a link:
