Title: whats your spot on a turkey?
Post by: hickstick on April 15, 2008, 11:57:00 AM
just as with bowhunting deer, there are several opinions on the best shot/shot placement for bowhunting turkeys.  for deer it could be quartering away or broadside etc, heart, heart lung, double lung, etc.

for turkeys I've heard; broadside-at the base of the wing,  broadside-head/neck (as a hit is pretty nearly all fatal and a miss is likely a clean miss),  facing away in strut aiming at the vent....etc.

what is your opinion?

I always look to just below the "shoulder" joint, on broadside shots. Quartering to, or away I try to imagine a line drawn from one shoulder to the other and place a shot parallel to this line and just under. Most of my shots have been inside a circle encompassed by the top of the leg, shoulder and mid-wing. I have only ever had one get far enough away I had to look hard for it. Didn't seem like a bad hit, but it managed to crawl under a log. Took about an hour, but I found it.

Not long ago we had this discussion and someone, (don't remember who. sorry)
posted some great illustrations on turkey anatomy. There was a lot of opinions. Your description seemed to be the popular aiming points. It was a very interesting thread. You could do a search for it. Or maybe someone can post a link.

There was a thread about this a short while back that talked about the group of dark brown feathers straight above the legs that would be a good spot to aim.

The feathers were called by particular name, but I can't remember, it was 2 word name that sounded a little scientific to me..

Anyone remember and help me out...

Thanks

Hopefully I will be getting my first shot at a gobble, I'm still torn between taking a body shot or a head shot. Honestly I'm not half bad with the head shots, and if I miss so what. I think I may just let the situation dictate.
