I broke mine middle of August and it's still giving me fits. been to Orthopedic 3x and now a hand specialist no one can figure It out. Last I was told is they suspect the bone died, now what ? Can't really shoot much as it feels like hand on my bow arm has a poker running through it when I do. Really cut's down on a guys ability to practice or even just shoot for fun. Any words of encouragement ?

Hang in there and keep following your doctor's advice! I broke mine when I was 13 in a dirt bike crash along with several bones in fingers, hand and both lower bones in my arm above the wrist. I wrecked myself in the beginning of June and was shooting my bow by the end of August. I did have youth on my side for the healing process.
Unfortunately, for about 5 years after if I moved my wrist in a certain way it would momentarily be excruciatingly painful for about 3 seconds and then go away. Luckily, it never affected my ability to shoot.

Well if it's AVN your Orthropod will probally tell you to stop shooting. I've seen everything from the reconstruction surgery to the pyrocarbon implant. Usually it a splint, PT/OT and stop doing things to aggravate the area. Take a break and try to heal.

Yooper, what is a NVA ? never heard that term. Unfortunately with the current panic I cant even get in to have a MRI to see what's going on.

I broke the scaphoid in my left hand when I was 24-25 playing a pick-up game of basketball with some old high school friends (First, most old high school wrestlers shouldn’t attempt to play basketball.). It was sore and bothered me for a couple of years but I didn’t start bowhunting until a couple years later and shot a bow left handed then. When I switched to shooting right handed 7-8 years after breaking the scaphoid, there wasn’t with any pain or issues.
One note, I did not go to the doctor when I broke it and it healed with an obvious bump. Twenty plus years later the doctor who operated on my right shoulder wanted to see how it healed and X-rayed it.

Sounds like they suspect avascular necrosis (AVN). The blood supply may have been compromised with your fracture.

Uh oh, this could be serious. My son broke his on his bow hand, playing pick-up basketball. First surgeon tried to use screws to tie the two pieces together but actually made it worse when the bigger piece splintered. Second surgeon had to fuse the broken pieces together which has reduced function somewhat, but not enough to stop shooting a bow.

The peculiarity of its blood supply is the primary reason for this prolonged healing period. Whereas other fractures in the upper extremity require an average of six weeks, a scaphoid fracture requires an average of 12 weeks if treated immediately, and as long as six months if the diagnosis is delayed.

I have had my Carpel bones dislocated and that's bad enough.

I'll have an MRI this coming Wed, then off to the doc. Hopefully it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The pain in it and inability to use it tells me otherwise

Mine is currently broken and dying...or dead. For over a year, they treated it as if it was tendinitis. An MRI told the real story. cracked and dying along with torn ligaments and arthritis.
It had sucked for over a year and a half and don't know how I did it. Currently am doing well after a very focused injection using some fancy camera..xray type thingy to get the steroid in the right spot.
It doesn't affect my shooting since it's in my draw hand. They gave me two options... fuse the rist or create a new flex area in my wrist.
I already have a fused wrist on my left hand, so that isn't an option. Just going to enjoy the shots until I have no choice... but then you never know what the good lord has in mind for ya!

Valley, good luck. Please don't think I was diagnosing you over the internet :^) Once they get a concrete diagnosis you can get some treatment options and some relief.
