Title: Riser/limb glue up
Post by: mzombek on February 22, 2020, 06:06:03 AM
When gluing up a bow using a fire hose, I have issues with the riser moving around on the laminations . Because of that, I am going to try the mule tape setup for my form. My question is, can I drill a hole into the laminations on the back side of the bow, then the same size hole into the riser. I would insert a dowel into the holes keeping the laminations from moving on the riser. I would then glue a strip of wood to the back side of the bow by the grip to cover the hole. Would this help me out?
Thanks

Most of us screw a washer on the sides of the form so the lams and riser cant slip around. Or you can drill holes thru your from ad use zip ties. But I still like having washers at the ends of the riser.

I use the topless form with the zip ties like Stic mentions and also adjustable retainers on the sides.  My retainers are just hardwood sticks that screw into the form with one screw.  They can be moved around in a circular fashion to line up exactly with the top of the stack at any point in the layup.  The ends of the lams are exactly fitted to the form and there are blockers on the end that are about 1/16" taller than the stack at the tips.  The blockers keep the lams from sliding up and down the form.  During the layup a large C clamp holds the riser centered with the centers of the lam stacks.  When the whole stack is in place the zip ties go on.  At that point its safe to remove the center riser clamp.  The mule tape (I use para cord) goes on starting at each end going about a foot at a time on each end.  When it's all in place a bit of pressure in the hose will hold it all together and the zip ties pull out pretty easily.

I can't find any pictures but if they show up I'll post them.

Yep that’ll work .  I would still want something mid limb on sides of form like the guys above mentioned .
