have an old pearson sherwood that was given to me recently.
handle was coming off so popped it off and am going to re epoxy the lams on.
tip is missing on the back of one tip.
fixable?
or should i just cut it down and reshape new tips?
-
Don't cut it down. I don't mess with glass bows but I'm sure someone would have a fix for you. Will you post a pic of the good tip for comparison?
-
Looks like a wall hanger. Might be worth restoring, to make it pretty. Shooting it :scared:
-
As a bowyer, there is nothing more noble that bringing one back from the dead. So good on you. Looks like you could glue and shape a new tip piece on it. How does that splice look?
-
Yeah, I was looking at the handle. It's always hard to assess condition from pictures. I'm guessing your going to enjoy this
-
You could use a rasp or course sand paper and grind down to a smooth surface and glue down an overlay then reshape.
Be careful about using steam or heat of any kind. It could affect the glue adversely.
-
You could try lightly torquing in the opposite direction of the twist. You may even try light heating with a heat gun while you torque it but don't let it get too hot, just warm it up a bit.. Also let it cool over night at least before stressing again after heating.
-
Once you get the repairs done you'll have to reeducate the limbs to bend and recover so take it slow and easy getting there.
-
Your choice of glue is going to be very important, don't use a two part epoxy like Two Ton, it becomes brittle over time and is not a good glue for bows.
Because I have it I would use unibond or smooth on.
Your bow making/Mr fix it skills will determine if you can bring the bow back to life.
This was my most involved fix of a broken tip.
-
would TB3 work in that area?
or 30min epoxy? i have some that i used for gluing handle laminations on my last bow.
-
I would lean toward TB3, make sure you glue surfaces mate up perfectly. Hold the unglued pieces up to a light while together, if you can see any daylight in the gap it isn't good enough.
