I know the names aren't in your inboxes yet, but here's the official thread to start scheming and dreaming in...
:campfire:
-
I’m just gonna make a bored bow this year...;)
-
I think I'll make a takedown selfbow this year...I'm taking one that blew and duct taping it back together
-
Yeah I got some wood choices in mind will put them up in next day or two. :bigsmyl:
-
My PVC recurve is going to blow you guys out of the water!
-
Perhaps this one?
-
Bow? I thought it was a picture of someone bowing!
-
Get it on, get it on, bang a gong ding dong. :bigsmyl:
-
Oh man...I got so many things in mind here. Thanks for putting this together again this year.
-
I just posted everyone's assignments. I included your own info so you can double check me, especially the shipping address for those of you who didn't verify that it was the same as last year. If all is good, no need to write me back. If not, let me know ASAP.
Time to get it on! (Bang a gong ding dong and all that...)
:campfire:
-
Boy Oh boy got me a victim :bigsmyl:
-
Yup, me too!! Poor critter... :)
-
Im not in this year but I can be a filler in case of a broken chain.
-
Im not in this year but I can be a filler in case of a broken chain.
Gotcha. Thanks.
-
I kind of have an idea of what I'm building. It could be a ugly duckling but it seems like my victim is a good one to test it out on. It's all a experiment.
-
Every year I make it a goal to experiment on my victim and try something new. This year will be my first 3pc.
-
I made a 5 piece a couple years ago. At least that's how many I could find... :)
-
Experimental seems to be the way to go this year huh? Suppose I'll add another thing I've never done to the list and make something off the wall.
-
Experiment...? Like building lams out of q-tips?
Wonder how snappy that would be :bigsmyl:
-
I guess I'll start a new form...
-

I considered torch bluing some very thin titanium and using that as a veneer but I'm worried it would corrode at some point.
-
If it’s under glass and with a good finish, I would think that risk is pretty slim.
I like the idea!
-
Titanium, well that is an idea.
I’m thinking barbed wire, since we are experimenting.
-
OK, is tapatalk working for everyone still?
-
no Nothing working for me right now.
-
Think they may be gonna start charging to use it?
Too bad, I got pics...
I don't have to build a new form, just modified one I had a little...
Got the lams picked, this gonna be a junkyard dog. Stuff out of the scrap bin that I just couldn't pitch but not big enough to cut 2 pairs from....
Riser of 2 woods I had radius cut but not sure what for …
May have to send some cash with it so the victim can buy a real bow... LOL

Somehow, Kenny, I expect your scrap bin would the envy of a great number of us.
-
Ok gonna try this one more time
To my victim I have a lot to choose from

:scared:
-
Stic, there's a lot of pink left there! That damn pink just won't go away!
I have my riser ready for the 3rd glue up and it still looks like this. Probably be the last time I build one like this even if I like it.
-
Travis that looks way better than the riser I have goin. Mine is sort of a rectangle with glue booger’s all over! :)
-
I stopped off Friday and grabbed a nice looking chunk of spalted Tamarind for my victims riser. Now I have to wait on a bit more cactus juice so I can stabilize it. It's going to get an accent run through it most likely, just not sure what I want that to be.
I have a few choices of veneers but pretty sure I will go with my personal favorite... but who knows, I am as fickle as a school girl after all.
-
Got me some Claro walnut under vac right now. Hmmm
-
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Dang, Kenny, those are some nice glue lines! :)
-
Thanks Mike!!
-
Not sure yet if this is gonna be my swap bow or not. I usually try to build something clean and classy but this thing might be more of a lady of the night. What do you think, Cedar or Apple veneers?
-
Looks good to me Travis.
-
Stic, There's some surprises inside the riser I'm not sure about. I saw your post about stabilizing some walnut, does it take resin well?
-
Travis, either will look great! I would prob go with apple lams as I like limbs lighter color than riser, but that's just me...
-
I'm going to vote for the cedars.
-
That's a tough call! The apple on the last bow you built looked amazing, however, the cedar looks awesome with the knots and will give good contrast. I vote cedar as well but it's a close race!
-
I’m personally digging the cedar, but either will look awesome.
-
The last walnut I stabilized gained quite a bit of weight.I think it got some resin all the way thru but seemed more on the outside. I have some Claro vacing now for 48 hrs. They are saying let it soak for a week or longer after releasing the vacuum. we will see. I was concerned that if the wood still floated after vac that it was not penetrated. The founder of the juice said float or not does not matter. Some woods will not and some will depending on specific gravity of that wood.
-
I have picked materials for trade bow.
Handle is straight pieces of Purpleheart and Courbaril with some overlay on back.
Limbs is Walnut lams with .0015 taper, Uni-Weft, Bjorn clear glass, Purpleheart wedge and Linen Micarta tip reinforcement.
Nothing extraordinary, but I have used this combo before and it makes a nice shooting bow.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
what Cockle burr wood :bigsmyl: never heard of that courbaril wood.
-
Another cockle name for Jatoba, very strong, tough wood.
-
Guess this tells it is a TD ... :)
-
Very nice Bocote there Kenny!
-
Its only on belly, this bow is from the scrap bin... LOL
Stuff I just couldn't pitch...
-
I knew I shoulda drawn your name...
-
That's some good look'n scrap wood Kenny!
-
Nice Bocote.
-
Thinking of sending this to Kenny to get some lams out of it. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Nah Tim just send to me :bigsmyl:
Okay victim got a start today. Gnna be a TD longbow. This will be the riser. have not decide on the veneers yet. I have some blue angel spectraply. What do you think?? BTW these pics come from Imgur. could get them to work out of my files and Tapatalk aint working. Installed Imgur on my phone and transfered them there to Imgur then post them here off of the PC. Is tapatalk working for you guys?

I like the blue Stic! A lot progress happening early
-
Nice combination Crooked Stic. A lucky victim!
I am curious about you template. What are the holes and pins for?
-
They are location pins for marking to cut in two. and the main jig has pins also for locating the pieces for grinding.
-
Ooh, interesting! No room for error there. Thanks for sharing
-
Veneers, I guess they could be used for something.

Getting some things together for my victim,,,
-
I did some drilling and threaded inserts today.
-
I finally got my Cactus Juice and a silicone sheet to make a new seal for the chamber so the Tamarind is finally marinating in the juice.
-
Have all my pieces made. Getting close to being ready for glue.

That’s gonna be nice!!

Ever have pins push back up from air compressed and sealed by glue?
-
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Sand a flat on the side of the dowel pin
-
Could do that Mark! I grind a divot on each side to keep pin in riser. Have had a couple pull out with limb …
First time I've put tape on the pad before gluing, kinda like it.
-
Limbs are mounted, no pics , this is a top secret junkyard dawg … ;)
-
Kenny, from what you have showed us that's gonna be a good look'n junk yard dawg!
-
Kenny, I file a small grove on all 4 corners of the pin and then glue up with Smooth-on MT-13 epoxy.
-
For the pin fit I try to get the limb holes not wiggly loose but loose enough they dont hang up. And just enough pin sticking out to locate the limb. Prolly no more than 1/3rd of the pin sticking out.
Ok victim I have a block here. Blue stable maple and charcoal AW. So I need some input on veneers. I have this blue angel AW or sumpin else??

-
Looks good together.
-
i agree...that is a wild looking bow so go for it all....i like the lams
-
Looks like it should make a good look'n combo!
-
Is there a limit to missed weight? This is a brand new design and I’m gonna miss by 3-4 low ? LOL
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
That's pretty dang close for a new design. Maybe your victim will spill something. Twere me, I'd be happy with it.
-
How long is that riser. Dem limbs look familiar.
-
She’s a 60 with a 15” riser. May trim to 58 to get weight. String is a bit close to limb at tips to suit me...
-
And this limb is a first ... in some ways... lol
-
Seeing as experimentation seems to be our theme this year and you did something outside your norm, I would vote 3-4# to be within limits!
-
Kenny I think that ought to handle a longer draw. As long as that string aint tiouchin itll be okay.
-
Right now it goes to 29 before gaining per inch but if the tips were slimmed down it would uncurl tips more for longer draw plus give more string clearance . Why why why do I make a first for the swap??? :biglaugh:
-
I'm good with a few pounds off Kenny. Just make sure to take the diaper off the riser before you send it.
-
LOL
-
my $0.02.....I like to hunt with the bows i get at least a couple times but if I can't take it hunting due to being too light for state regs, I use it for form work/winter target practice...so, all is well. I would rather have a bow that came in under than one that came in #10 over. lol
-
I could make another set of string grooves and send 2strings with it but I don’t really like that look....
-
3 or 4 would not bother me BTW
-
3-4# low is not an issue for me.
Not sure what you don’t like in the limbs this profile looks really fast and smooth drawing to me. Do you have a picture at full draw?
-
Got the riser profiled today. being it is blue in the front I added a clear glass over and is now under pressure curing.

3-4# low is horrible. Send that bow to me right away and get started on another :saywhat:
-
Dang, y'all are getting after it!!! I've been up to my eyeballs and wasn't even planning to put real time into this until the second half of March.
Kenny, I wouldn't worry about your recipient too much. He's easy going and has no idea what he really wants anyhow.
-
That probably just made everybody think They are the victim Dave!!
-

Yup, I think it's my job to be ambiguous here... :bigsmyl:
-
I figure it must be me then I know not what I want. :bigsmyl:
-
Ready for a test run and then some glue.
-
That one will be nice.
-
Nice layout, lots of pieces too!
-
Lookin good Travis!!
I’m either gonna cut my victims bow to 58” or make a set of pink :bigsmyl: phenolic limb pad wedges to get the string off the limbs. When you strum the string it rattles on the limbs a bit...
-
Dang Kenny never seen pink phenolic before that will be cute tho. :biglaugh: Have you tried raising the brace a bit??
-
Not diggin this bow at all....
-
What are you not liking about Kenny? I was liking the looks of it.
-
Not enough preload to keep quiet . I have to build different riser or limbs ...
-
Kenny, what if you took your limb mounting hardware out filled the holes and glued a piece to the pads. Then you could change your pad angle. Not sure if it would be worth the effort. Could probably just make a wedge and glue it on the pad and still use the hardware depending on how many degrees you need. Could make some wedges just to see how she acts with a little less pad angle.
-
We think alike. Already made wedges and flattened angle. Not gonna be enough . So prob make new riser and get them the way I want em
-
What angle are your pads now?
-
well, i sent my zebrawood board to the lovely and talented Mr. Kenny. After he checks it out and determines what can be done with it, we'll see if i use it for this swap or decide to go another direction.
-
Pads were 18, was copying (gasp) a known bow for this one but now doing what I shoulda done first. Measure six times cut once!!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Tim the pic of that board made me drool a little!!
I've settled on 13* pads for it. Will see...
-
Where the limbs on the old riser floppy or pretty stable?
-
Not real floppy, just no preload to speak of. Not sure why I didn't see that. Brain gas I reckon...
Ah well, maybe I'll make a recurve with that riser someday...
-
Mailman brought me a tube with some scraps in it today. Not sure if they're useable though. You guys think I can salvage these somehow?
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Naw just send them veneers here. Then you can use that wrinkly paper for your veneers. be sure to get plenty of glue on them tho.. :bigsmyl: :scared:
-
You know, I considered ironing those rags before taking that picture
I will definitely be using an absurd amount of glue on this one
-
Pads were 18, was copying (gasp) a known bow for this one but now doing what I shoulda done first. Measure six times cut once!!
Based on what I see here I wonder if we haven't copied the same known bow.
-
The Tamarind is in for a nice long bake but I don't think it's going to make it to the bow stage. I don't recall the dark streaks being that far up so I am wondering if I didn't scrape the wax well enough. But I also wonder, would Cactus Juice cause the wax to soak in more or perhaps those dark areas were there and I am just senile. (your welcome Roy, have fun)
On top of that it took on some gnarly checks while it was in the soak.
I'll just have to see what it looks like after the bake and I can shave it down a bit. If it does make the cut I will likely have to change the form I planned to use and go with a more mild R/D
-
That is after I changed the pad angle by my usual way. Getting the nocks ahead of the back a bit...
The known bow had nocks on belly side when you put the straitedge to it...
-
Well it's all glued up. I think it's gonna finish up a couple pounds heavy. Hopefully that's okay. Made a little lower grip than I normally do just to see if I like it. Still have to glue up the tips and over lays.

-
Somebody gonna be happy. That is a sweet one.
Lonnie if you put that wood in the resin right after the wax was off it may not have been dry enough.
-
That is a beauty, must have been a puzzle to get it together. :)
-
Looks amazing 4 point, you are an artist for sure. Couple pounds heavy? Well within limits! I know I'd work out a bit to shoot that bow :biglaugh:
Good call on the flat cardboard, Stic don't like wrinkles
-
Somebody gonna be happy. That is a sweet one.
Lonnie if you put that wood in the resin right after the wax was off it may not have been dry enough.
I will remember that. I was hoping it would be good, it only had wax on the ends and it didn't really look to be enough to seal anything.
Either way, I will just have to go shopping again.... darn it.
-
doing some dry runs before glueup..
-
Got the poundage down so its in the range. Shoots good for me. Ready for final sanding and finish.

-
Great looker Travis!!
-
Those veneers look fantastic. Great bow.
-
Thanks guys, I changed the grip a little from what I normally make trying to make the pattern show more. I don't care for it. Hopefully it works for my victims shooting style.
-
Beautiful bow 4 point! Lucky victim
-
Beautiful bow Travis. Hope my build turns out even half as nice.
-
Must be a real Sivertsen, will be one lucky victim.
-
Glad you guys like it. I really don’t care for it. I had some pieces that weren’t big enough for anything but overlays. I glued them all together to make a riser block.
Bue, are there Sivertsen’s in Norway?
-
There is close to 6000 people with the name Sivertsen in Norway.
-
That’s the area my family came from when they came to America. The two brothers that came over got in a fight so one changed the spelling from sen to son. There are a lot of sivertson’s around this area.
-
Hopefully back on track now...

Hey Kenny, when are you going to stop playing around with scrap wood and start making your victim a decent bow?

-
Just trying to use up some of these things I can't throw out... Selfish huh? :biglaugh:
-
Linen Micarta tips, maybe, don’t know for sure.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Nice tips Bue…
Hmmmm, can ya say that on here? :o
-
Those look good Bue!
Kenny, that's gonna make a good look'n riser. Looks like the grip is gonna be set forward some.
-
Kenny, that scrap wood looks nice, should make a smashing riser.
-
Looking good Bue. I would take them scraps Kenny.
-
More scrap...
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
So what does a pile of "scrap" wood go for Kenny? :goldtooth:
-
A thousand?
There have been quite a few bows built from scraps here...
-
Kenny, I just noticed how you used the cut off pieces to clamp against your limb pads. Great idea!
-
Travis, ya gotta be versatile when ya scrap stuff together!!
-
A bit more progress...

Hmmm dem scraps takin shape
-
Very nice Kenny! I'm liking what you have started! You might have to put a scrap bucket section on your website, I think it would sell.
-
That .020 zebra on the back of riser was a critter to get on there with the curves!!
thanks guys!
-
Kenny if you do a lot of those risers with the thin strip here is an idea. Just have to make the top match the riser and let the hose do the work. Mine is a simple arc.
-
Mike , sadly a lot of my bows are one off ,then I change stuff. So I just don't build many jigs or special forms... :dunno: :biglaugh:
-
Now we goin ! This is more what I had in mind !!

Unbraced
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Looks good Kenny. Is that a more radical limb design compared to the plans your selling?
-
It is a test set, but adapted to a shorter riser. So a 60" bow instead of 62/64.
A side note, I ruined a limb by not taking enough care I guess in filing nock grooves. Split a 1/8"x 3" pc of glass off the edge by a nock while checking weight ... :banghead: Guess there's a first time for everything...
So new limbs gonna happen now... Not sure I have enough scrap to make em… :help:

Could you trap the limbs to save them? Would probably come in light, but would be good for a performance test.
-
I guess I think its okay :bigsmyl:
-
Can’t trap enough off with it being at nock. But found a couple in the scrap bin to go on with. Gonna have to be careful now. Scrap bin gettin low !
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
So you makin more limbs?? Did the angle change make much of a weight change?
-
Yep on new limbs. I glued the chunk of glass back down but it ain't leavin the shop. I have an old riser with same angle I think I can mess with them on.
It made about 10 lbs difference going from 18 to 13 degrees.
I figured out what split it off too, when I cleaned it up and pulled tape to glue the sliver down I found a pc of fuzz at very end of the split. I had a shop string break when I was plucking the string on the first riser and listening to her vibrate. Never really looked the bow over cause I was only pulling the string back a couple inches and the tape kept it from being obvious. Pretty sure a strand of string caught on the glass and just unzipped the corner of limb now after thinking about it....
-
Yeah Kenny I see the same thing on my risers..a 5 degree change affects weight around 8 to 10 lbs.
-
First new limb in oven.
I gotta get this thing done, my boss is gonna want me to go to work about any time now!!
-
Nice lookin bow. I was thinkin maybe could take those scraps from cutting out riser and make fishin lures out of them. But then I got to thinkin, one more hobby and Im gonna be single and homeless.
-
Yeah but you’d have fishin lures!! :biglaugh:
-
Okay victim first limb under pressure.

Nice PINK benchtop!! Lookin good.
I may have time to work on my poor victims bow the next couple days. Boss called and may wanna go back to work in the next few days...
Work is a four letter word... :biglaugh: (but helps wit the luxuries like food )
-
Went to the hardwood place on Friday. They had nothing left in 8/4 thickness for exotic wood. They should have some more coming this week.
Clock’s ticking...
-
It is kinda pink I guess. Dont tell Elroy PLZ Masking paper.
Work is over ratted Retired :bigsmyl:

Gluing overlay. I have two curves in the making.

-
Hmm I got me some overlay forms like that. :clapper:
-
Wow! Some very nice bows are to be built !
-
I get jealous every time I see a picture of Bue's shop...
-
Bue, do you just use regular tye wraps to hold it all together before you have air in the hose?
-
Yes, ordinary zip ties on top of metal strip. I pump the hose up to about 20 pounds and let it sit for about 10 minutes. If all is well up to 35-40 pounds, look it over and cut and pull out ties. Then up to 50-55 pounds.
One time I forgot to remove ties, but all was well after curing.I guess as long as ties are on top of metal strip it is okay.
I do the same with bow limbs.
-
Good to know, it seems like a better option than tape!
-
Those ties work real well on the recurve tips to bend them around the form.
Not much to show for the victim.
-
Will be a nice handle.
-
Thanks Bue hoping I hit the weight for Mr. victim.

had not had a delam like this in 15 yrs. found my air gage was off and overpressurized and squeezed out the glue

Nice bow right there. The pup prolly come around to.

Hopefully Stik but shes only 9 weeks so I have a lot of puppy time to get thru.

Looking very good.

Great job!
-
Thanks to BuddyB for turning that picture, before I scrolled down I was starting to get a neck cramp trying to make sense of the pic. Kinda looked photoshopped...
Travis, that bow is outstanding.

Dave, it was photoshopped, I'm actually making a one piece bow... :bigsmyl:
But "if" I was making a TD, where would you guys write the specs? On the riser or limbs??? :)
-
Bottom limb right under the riser. But you could write his name or something silly on the riser to.
-
Right or wrong I write the specs on the edge of the lower limb wedge. Name and other writing goes on the riser beside the limb wedge I wrote on.
-
That’s a beautiful bow Travis! :clapper:
Beautiful riser too Kenny. I second Stic for the specs
-
Here’s the belly lams on the scrapper...

-
Beautiful Kenny.
-
Nice, is it Bocote?
-
Yep, another scrap I just couldn't pitch. Usually have a barrel of em in various woods. If they won't make 2 pair and are purty they go in the barrel.
-
:shaka:
-
I’m hoping that thing is monkey arm rated Kenny. I like it!
-
I can’t say , Travis... :biglaugh:
-
Well I got limbs. Second guessed myself and they way too heavy :saywhat: Soo will make more
(https://i.imgur.com/NY6X3dK.jpg)
-
Has anybody shipped yet ?
-
Still trying to get started on mine. Currently fighting with the paint on the one I'm building now. Expecting to be finished with it tomorrow and starting my victim's bow Saturday.
-
I haven’t. Need to serve the string and make a box
-
Not much happening around here. Figured there'd be a lot stuff happening with everyone being locked by the Corona.
-
I’m tryin to decide whether to send the td or the pink bow...
-
Enough Corona will make you sillyand not want to build a bow. Pink Kenny pends on who gets it :bigsmyl:
I got the third limb under pressure to day. Hoping these will hit weight.
-
I’m fairly sure a few Corona’s will cure Corona. Maybe a glass of 40 Creek on ice to chase them down just in case they don’t do the trick!
-
I got a string made today, getting close...
-
Been avoid the corona thingee by fishing in the gulf on a guys' trip. Should be home to start bow makin' soon, assuming I can get there...
-
Another limb under pressure.
-
Dave, just stay 600 feet from people . Or was it 60 or 6??
Sent ya a pm...
-
Stay outta PA. to
-
That corona virus thing is gonna slow me down. I don’t have my own shop and I am really grateful my friend lets me use his every weekend.
But my friend is also 65+ years old and has had health issues so I decided not to go to his place last weekend. I am going to quarantine myself 2 weeks minimum before thinking about going back to see him.
I have to think about his health first.
Hoping things go back to normal sooner than later
Hope you guys all stay safe
-
Hope my name likes wood grain lol..shedua riser, bamboo cores and zebrawood veneers. When I was first thinking of shooting a recurve I knew no one who shot trad nor had any idea where to start. Did a search online for custom recurve and low and behold the Silvertips came up. On his home page was a 3 PC recurve shedua riser with flat zebra limbs and I still kick myself for not ordering one lol. So I'm building a longbow for my victim [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
That’s gonna be sharp. Gonna be hard to pick a favorite this year, some super nice stuff coming along!
-
Looking very promising!
-
Some wild grain, looking good.

Waitin for clearance to send it...

Not bad for scrap wood! ;)

You are cleared. And I know ya got my address :bigsmyl:
You must be first one done this year.
-
Turned out great Kenny!
-
Funny Kenny, I'm working on an all zebra bow right now and loving the way yours looks with one type of wood. Getting tired of the footed look I guess. That thing is a stunner!
-
Nice one Kenny.
-
look's really good Kenny
I will be waiting for it
-
wow...awesome bow sir...turned out really nice

Thanks guys! I'd like to get it gone before I get too attached to it!! :biglaugh:

Finally got a nice day so I put some arrows thru my victims bow. She's fairly well tuned in. I kinda like it. Just need to build a shipping box and its ready to go.
-
:shaka: like the pierce points too (I think that's what you call them)
-
Not really true pierce points. This one is just a bunch of pieces glued together. Pierce points are cut in with a finger joint bit.
-
Looks great , Travis!!
I shipped the scrapper Saturday , it should arrive at its new home about Thursday .
-
Test shooting number one today, to see how it behaves. Two speedtesters set up in a tandem configuration to make sure I measure straight arrow flight and correct speed. If the arrow goes through in a straight line the speed will be the same or one feet slower on the one in the back.Tested with two arrow weights.
Testing done at victims drawlenght.
Nr one, 9,14 grain pr pound draw weight. 198 feet
No two, 11,78 grain pr pound draw weight. 177 feet
I was given a range of wished for draw weight and is a 1/2 pound below the lowest, hope that will be allright.
-
-
Forgot to say that test was done with 16 strand flemish twist fast flight plus string. Fletching 4 inch helical.
-
Nice!! With those numbers, the half a pound ain't needed!!
-
Half pound doesn’t bother me a bit. Send it! Great preforming bow!

Beautiful bows guys!
I am getting a little behind. Decided to order lams and riser block to size so I will limit using my friend’s shop and reduce risk of getting him sick.
Started today by making strings. Also scarf joined and fine sanded some veneers for my victim’s bow.
-
Still liking this Kenny bow really well.

Mike looks like you are shooting it well , does that grip agree with you? The grip always worries me on a bow for someone else...

I feel bad seeing how great of work y'all are doing! Here is a couple of pictures just before glue up...

Kenny I dont really use the whole grip. My hand is at an angle and fingers loose.Kinda like an Asbel grip. If I really gripped the bow the front left corner would need tobe rounded a bit more.Size wise its perfect.
-
Dang it Kenny! I just sent you an email with a small order. I set down last night and decided what I was going to do with my riser as far as accents and then I get on here this morning and see your swap bow and it’s pretty much the same as what I had come up with. :banghead:
Oh well, I’m still going to do the what I had intended, maybe just not exactly like yours! :biglaugh:

I received a box in the mail today! I’ll post pics hopefully tomorrow!

I was thinkin a blue bow had been mailed recently. :biglaugh:

Hmm :dunno:

I made some progress and the handle(s). Did some crazy things to with a router and the handrail on my balcony. Definitely not the best way to shape flares. Here was my setup :
-
I still have to do a little correction before I can glue the handle together. Aiming at tomorrow.
-
Novel way of doing it!. Looks like a plan!.

I had a bad experience trying use a router for profiling.

Well I agree 100%. I won’t do it again. To stressful and not precise enough with this setup.
I guess I just needed my own experience with it!

I received my swap bow from BO-R this past Wednesday. I’m am very pleased to say the least. How did he know I’ve had recurves on my mind? :biglaugh: This bow is 62” NTN, 50#@28”. I put a couple silencers on the string, eyeballed a knock set, and started putting some arrows through her. I have to say she’s extremely easy to shoot very quiet and accurate.
Thank you BO-R! I’m extremely happy with this bow and can’t wait to carry this thing to the woods this fall.
As for my swap bow, I glued my riser up this afternoon. I hope to get the limbs mounted on the riser by tomorrow afternoon and get them ready to profile.
Here is a full draw pic of my swap bow.

The bow is off the form:

The bow is off the form:

Do you do anything with the lams to make sure the bottom limb is the bottom limb after glueup?

Yep bottom limb is on the left.
No I don’t do anything to my lams for that. I never had any issue getting the right tiller so far (this is only the third bow)
-
Those limbs are really aggressive! Its gonna be a sharp looking bow!
-
Looking good

Overlay and tips glued on

Can ya get two this year :biglaugh:

You are correct 4 point! I will get some better pictures next week once I can shoot it. The cedar veneers look even better in person! This bow is awesome. The grip feels great so far, and I am really noticing a lot of fine details. Thanks!!

Pretty sweet looking bow there.

Bue, I do use tip wedges in it. It’s smooth out past 31”s

UPDATE:
Reminder that the ship by due date is 6/5, or 5 weeks from today! By my tracking, we have 3 bows received and 2 in the mail. We had a couple bowyers that had to drop out early as circumstances changed, so we're down to 13 bowyers. Counting shipped bows, we're at 38% complete (23% received). Doing good. But would like to see some updates from:
- TradBowyer
- Sacred mt
- EvilDogBeast
- John Scifres
I owe an update myself! Things have been a bit crazier than I predicted, so I've put the idea of making my first 3-piece on hold until next year and am going with a one piece I have some experience and forms for already. I found this board buried in my lumber pile that I want to use for the riser. No idea what it is (it was part of a grab bag of lumber from hardwood pallets or something a friend had), and the picture doesn't show the color very well, but it's heavy and beautiful and should make a sweet looking riser.
I ordered some more glass from Kenny. Going to try BP for the first time, need to adjust my stack a bit it seems. Hopefully it doesn't take more than one try to hit my recipient's weight range. Question though for my victim if he's watching: would you prefer yew or curly koa limbs? I'm kind of leaning towards yew if I don't hear anything. I just love yew... :archer:

Yew or curly koa? That’s a tuff one! Either one would look great but I think I would go with the koa for this riser
-
I just love yew... :archer:
I love yew too, Dave. :biglaugh:
-
I just received my last shipment of parts today so I will be starting tomorrow. Pictures to to come tomorrow as well, having trouble making a decision on colors!
Dave, sorry for my silence. I'll get my butt in gear. Also, do you have a picture of the yew and curly koa veneers?
-
Got my stave just last week so I'll be working on building my exchange....Thanks.
-
I first strung the bow last weekend. Seems really heavy which is not what I aimed for. :knothead:
I will get it closer to the finish size to see exactly how much I am off. But I might have to build a plan B
-
Fingers crossed for you!!! Although I'll have to say I've had to go to a few "Plan B" bows in past years myself. I think there was one year where I ended up on plan d before it was all over.
:campfire:
-
I sent my trade bow on April 20, usually it takes a week to cross, maybe this Corona crap is slowing down shipping too.
-
Bue, some shipping in the states is dragging too...
-
Well, I have the finish sprayed on the riser and was getting ready to spray my limbs this afternoon. I put them on the bow and string it up to make sure filler and everything was ok one more time before spraying. I went ahead and shot it a few times while I had it strung. Seems it’s developed a creak whenever drawing and seems noisy on the top limb. I was shooting it several weeks ago before spraying finish on riser and it was super quiet and had no creak at all in the limbs. Just curious what could be causing this? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Dannon
-
It fairly common on takedowns. A little string wax on the pad will fix it after you get the finish done
-
Thanks 4 point! I never thought of that! :biglaugh:
-
Yep , I have to put some lube my td on occasion . Maybe if I used something better than chapstick ... lol
-
Toilet ring wax works really good. Just be sure it is not used so your bow does not shoot like crap----

Fairly dead around here for only a month left before the dead line.
-
Come Monday it is three weeks since I posted my trade bow. Maybe it is in quarantine with everything else these days. Usually takes only a week to cross the Atlantic.
-
Hopefully they didn’t loose it Bue. Was it shipped thru the postal service?

Word of caution, when you put a TD back together after spraying it needs to have had a lot of time to harden. Otherwise that creaking can be the two fresh finished pieces kind of sticking together and getting stuck. From experience!
-
USPS, the tracking says it left Norway on April 27, so it must be some place in America now.
-
Well it ain’t in my mail box, just checked. Made me sad
-
Dang it, not here either. I will say USPS has been a little slow lately. Well, maybe quite a bit slow...
-
I sure got nothing. Oh wait I already have mine
-
I'm hoping to start mine next week. Got all the supplies and ready to rock
-
I worked on the bow this past week. Sanded all I could but it is still way too heavy for my victim.
I see two options:
1- I start over but will most certainly not be able to ship by the deadline
2- The last bow I built fits my victim’s specs. I could refinish it and send it to my victim
Let me know what you think I should do
-
I’d be fine with one already built.
-
All settled on my wood choices and trimmed veneers to size. Pistachio veneers with red elm and walnut cores, bubinga I-beam with wenge sides and canarywood accent strips. Tomorrow I build the riser and then time to glue!
-
One already built will be fine.
Evil that should be a fine one.
-
How do you delete a post?
-
I’ll try to get a string built this evening. I’ll be ready to ship here shortly.

Looks good, what woods are you using?
-
Looks great!!
-
Thanks guys! Buddy, it's bubinga, wenge, and canarywood.
-
:shaka: :shaka:
-
That’s a good combo Chris. Those are the same woods I used in my swap bows riser.
-
Crap, didn't mean to be a copy-cat. Need to pay more attention :banghead:
-
That will be a nice riser :)

Shaping a plan B riser
-
Good looking work guy's!

Last tracking says, your item has been processed through our facility in ISC New York NY (USPS) at 8:10 AM on May 12.
Package should be home soon.

First, apologies I've been AWOL. All is good here, just can't figure out where the time goes lately. Things seemed kind of turned upside down the last couple of months. I'll respond to the messages y'all have sent shortly, just wanted to look through the thread first.
Great to see all the awesome progress. No pressure, but we're less than three weeks away. Theoretically, that should be enough time for Bue's bow to make it to the final destination. Next week is all rain here, so I plan to put some time in down at the shop and get this thing glued up. All the supplies are in and I don't want to be the guy who doesn't make the deadline!
-Dave
-
Today I prepared veneers and sanded a new set of lams for my plan B. Hopefully I ´ll get it glued up by end of the week
-
Moving along slowly. This riser block is giving me fits. Can't seem to get rid of this hairline gap around half the blasted thing. Making a pattern sander when this is finished. :banghead:

I fought those hairlines too and unfortunately my equipment doesn't lend itself to pattern sanding, so.... I take a strip of 36 or 60 grit that is wider than the piece by a bit and tape it onto the form with at least an inc or a bit more longer than the riser block at each end. If the sand paper is not long enough you. Might need to splice. Set your block on top of the paper paying close attention to the centering. Put some serious pressure on it and work it up and down the form in short strokes.
You can follow the progress by looking at the sand paper. The areas with no sawdust are the areas that are not yet fitted.

Just to clarify before I do it, you move the riser length-wise or width-wise on the form? Thanks for the help!
-
Cross.
-
up and down the form in very short strokes. I think across will end up rounding the back of the rizer side to side.
-
I received a box from the other side of the Atlantic this evening!!!
Pictures to come tomorrow...
-
You lucky dog Dave! I’ve been checking my mail hoping to find it!
-
Thanks monterey!
-
You may be right about ronnding the riser side to side a bit. either way it is gonna take awhile. I always went cross ways for making template patterns but they are 1/4 plywood.
-
Just been to the post office to pick up a package from America. Must be the arrow shafts I ordered. :goldtooth:

Man Bue that is a lot of arrows. :bigsmyl:
-
I am a happy man today. I was lucky to receive Mike’s nicely made blue bow, even comes with a blue colored bowstring. I shot a few arrows last evening and it fits me very well, nice shooter. I will have lots of fun with this one. Thanks Mike.
I am trying to post pics, but the attachments option do not seem to work, I’ll try again later.
-
Maybe.

That's a great looking bow! You are very lucky!
-
Evil. Even if you get your handle block to fit your form it may not fit when you get your lams under it. That changes it all. Better to place your lams on the form and mark your handle after that.
-
Glad you are liking the bow Bue. Everybody seems to like that grip. What do you think?

What Bue said.

Evil, found this from 2012, bit time consuming, but works

Thanks for the help guys. Bue, you are right about the lams and I remembered them yesterday and got the block squared away. Wish I hadn't forgotten that before, probably would have saved some time and trouble.
-
Plan B bow all glued up and cooking
-
I hope you hit the weight on plan B. Good luck.
-
Ok, it took a couple of days to find the batteries in my sock drawer to power the camera, etc, etc... but here are some pictures of the amazing bow that I was sent from Bue. I feel a bit guilty getting such a nice bow as the guy pulling the strings, but there was a little change up as someone had to drop out and I ended up with the short stick somehow.

I sat around the firepit on a work conference call yesterday afternoon and tied on some nocking points. While sitting I went ahead and shot the arrow I was using to check fit down the hill a ways. First arrow fired out of the bow, apparently there's a little luck packaged in with it:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
After that I was able to get my daughter to take some full draw pics as I searched for the arrow that would fly best out of it. (I ended up with some full length Axis 400's with 250 up front and pink fletching that fly like darts.) Ignore the fact that I haven't had a haircut since the end of January:

Thanks again Bue!
I've got my lams laid out and the riser block will go into the oven this morning. Should have a bow shooting by the end of the long weekend. Hope everyone else is getting close as well, deadline to ship is 2 weeks from today!
-
UPDATE
Out of 13 remaining bowyers, we have 5 bows confirmed shipped and received (38% complete) and another bow should be ready to ship if hasn't already with two weeks to go. It does look like everyone else is making good progress, so there's still a chance that if we keep at it we'll make it by the deadline. I've heard from everyone now, and although John Scifres hasn't posted yet he assured me his victim's stave is mostly tillered.
I recognize I haven't set the best example, but I'll get on it this weekend and will post some pictures as I go. We need to get this thread a bit more active in the 11th hour.

-
Dave,
I haven’t shipped mine yet, I’m waiting to get something else finished up that I’m sending with the bow. Should be ready to ship by the end of next week.
Thanks
Dannon
-
That is a nice Bue bow for sure
-
I have the bow just over the target weight. Should be just about perfect once I finish tiller. Glued tips an over lay. Starting to shape the handle today
-

I'll bet that drop out is kicking himself about right now.
Nice work Bue.
-
Good looking bow Bue!
-
Bad news my plan B blew up during tillering. I Think it has to do with the glue. I might have spread too thin. :banghead:
-
.
-
Man! What a bummer!. Feel for you.
-
Hey z, feel for you as well. One year my plan B bow failed, my plan C failed to get off the launchpad, and I think I may have been on E or F by the time something was successfully shipped to my recipient. It happens. I've also learned that more glue is more better...
-
Ok, made some good progress this weekend:

And pulled it out last night before bed to see how she did:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
FAIL! I'm not sure exactly what happened, I've never had Smooth-On fail me like that even with multiple trips through the oven. I still don't know what kind of wood this is, but it's dense and oily and purdy. I may be re-thinking my oven temps going forward, room temp cure or very low oven temp cure may be less risky...
I just gave up for the night and went inside. Best not to start messing with stuff when you're upset or in a speed wobble. I still have to make sure the bow will meet weight for the recipient, so I'll get it tillered out. I can always cut that block off and put a new one on, but not 100% sure of the matching seam already deeper in the bow. I guess when I cut the shelf to center I'll find out. Want to be sure before I send it to my victim, although from a strength perspective the seam isn't carrying any load.
I may be moving to Plan B as well. Be a shame to have wasted those curly koa veneers.
-
That sucks. Be happy it did not get out the door first.
-
I've also learned that more glue is more better...
Guess I had to learn it myself!
I’ll try to save the riser and start over. I have to get more supplies too I am out of glass and glue
-
Well, cutting into it to shape the riser it looked worse than it is. 1/4” down you can’t split it on the glue line with a chisel and it only separated on exposed edges. So it seems structurally sound and most of the bad parts will be cut away during shaping. And the koa looks amazing so I think I’m going to try to finish it out. If it’s still good at the end and after shooting in, I may send it after all. If not, I’m sure it’ll still be good for someone, someday. But of course if my victim isn’t satisfied in any way, it’ll come with a no questions asked exchange policy...
:bigsmyl:
-
Dang, a lot of bad luck going around lately!
-
Ok here we go...laid up, glued and cooking as we speak. Shedua riser with beautiful zebra wood veneers with a boo core and a set Osage just to set the color off a bit. Hopefully she cooperates and turns into a nice piece.
-
That’s gonna be another nice one by the looks of it!
-
That Zebrano is stunning, will be goodlooking bow.
-
I just glued a zebra bow blank and the limbs both turned to one side. I usually make an x with the grain on zebra if they angle so the lams counteract each other. .035 veneers shouldn't make a limb twist but I'm sure thats what did it. I've glued prob 15 blanks on the form this past winter with nothing like this.
The bow checked perfectly straight with a string before profiling limbs.
When you are in a hurry it isn't good...
-
My victim should be seeing a box on his doorstep in several days.
-
Oh boy! I better start checking my mail.
-
Well, I think it's totally shipable; shoots strong, looks kinda purdy, and I'd be happy to receive myself. Will start final sanding and finishing this evening.

Ok...bow cured, profile roughed out and the tape peeled off..nothing was cleaned so lots of residue but peeling off the tape is always a big step. Never know if all your work is for naught until the tape comes off. No milky spots and good clean glass, I'm happy so far. Now time to get a string on her and see where we are with poundage
-
Very nice stuff getting finished up!!

2 beautiful bows to come for sure!

Nice bows being made.

Kenny, your bow still needs finish sprayed.
On an unrelated note, I hope to spray a second coat tomorrow.

I’m just kiddin everybody, no rush here. No time to shoot most days. About once in three weeks ! So take your time... :)

Calibrated a new set of lams. I hope to glue up a plan C bow by the weekend.
I will not be done by the deadline. Sorry in advance for my victim

I think you have as good a reason as anyone to stretch into the grace period. Keep at it Sam, those lams look nice.

This year has been a very unusual and scary one with the Corona and now the riots in America. I watch the news every day and I hope all of you are safe and stay healthy. I think it must be understandable that bow building had to take second place this year.
All the best from Bue.

I’m just glad it made it ok all the way from south Arkansas! Hope you enjoy it.

Working on the final touches and should be in the mail by Friday.
-
So the weather lightened up and I headed out to the range to this beauty to work. First off, top notch craftsmanship Dannon! Your wood choices were great and compliment each other well. The veneers are beautiful and I love how the shaping on the riser runs into the accents to create that asymmetrical X in the throat. Fit and finish is spot on as well. I was nervous to put it together for fear of dinging or scratching something!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Once I settled down a bit it was time to string her up and head out to the range. After waiting out the last of the rain and setting up on the 15 yard target box I was finally able to let the first arrow fly.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The shot was effortless and the arrow impacted right where I was looking. The draw was silky-smooth and the bow was dead in the hand on release. This led to many more shots, all just as pleasant as the first.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
After 20 shots the rain closed in on us again and I had to head back home. I can't wait to get back out there once I finish my trade bow. Thank you again Dannon. you have crafted a wonderful bow that I am not worthy of.
-
I’m glad you like it! I hope it serves you well!
-
Nice bow, lucky you.
-
Awesome, what a great bow!
I'm tracking 46% complete plus one in the mail still.
I had the brilliant idea of filling the grain in the riser with a brushed on coat of T-bird, full strength (no thinner). It wasn't super pretty, but I didn't care I was just going to fill the grain and sand it back off. I was doing a second bow at the same time for myself that I started last December and when I went to sand it down after 48 hours, things didn't go as planned. It sanded ok on the surface like you would want between coats, but it was not fully cured (they say 7 days or something) and so in areas I got back down to bare wood it didn't feather out nice but left a slight edge. Not sure how it will look when recoated, so I left for a couple more days and I'm going back today to revisit the sanding and see if I can get the bow sprayed today. Which means I can hopefully support shipping by Friday. At this point if it's still a bit difficult I may just fully sand every bit of it off and start over. Ugh...
The good news is that with some finish on it the bow looks amazing, the woods really pop.
-
Got my bow today from Mr. Nicholi...thank you sir...well done. I'll be putting the hero shots up a little later. Cant wait to shoot her.
-
Dang, I keep checking my mail box only to find disappointment!

It'll come...

Wow! Those veneers are nice!
-
Thanks! I am really happy with them. Actually kind of sad I have to taper the limbs :biglaugh:
-
I bet, those veneers look pretty sweet.
Well, I got a coat of finish on last night. Letting the finish set another day or so before sanding really helped. In the future I'm just going to use their filler/sealer though.
Problem though when I went to today to look it over and get ready for a second coat. You can see a slight milkiness (almost irredescent) over the dark wood in the right light. I had this happen last year about this time over the koa in my daughter's bow as well as with the ERC bow I'm doing now for myself. It's subtle, but it kinda bothers me. It may disappear under the satin top coat anyhow, but if not I'll have to sand it all off and try again. I know It's not the glass as the ERC is Gordons and this bow is BP and I see it on both. I've got a call into Dave at T-Bird to hopefully help me troubleshoot what's going wrong. Humidity is actually pretty good right now and temp in the shop is also ideal. In all likelihood I may nudge into the grace period myself which kind of hurts, but I don't want to send my very deserving recipient something I wouldn't be happy with myself.
Poor guy, on top of waiting he's going to know every flaw in this bow before it gets to him as I probably post too much of the problems I have vs the stuff that goes well...
-Dave
-
Is it satin or dull. How many coats on it. too many coats make a purple haze buy the flatting agent.
-
1st coat of gloss. It's subtle but it happened to me on a recent bow as well and after a couple of coats is was more substantial.
David had no ideas. I'm starting to suspect minor amounts of oil or moisture in my line. My filter/separator is a fairly cheap one. Just bought a good one. In the meantime I'm going to see if I can get enough flow out of a dive tank and regulator setup I use with my nailguns when I don't want to pull an extension cord to a little compressor. I know that air is clean and dry. If that doesn't work I'll assume my finish has some contaminants in it somehow.

Is that The Grim Reaper peering out the window under that cloak?
-
Maybe, you scared?
Or a bandsaw I want to keep overspray off of...

Well seems that the bow reaper has been on the move and he got me to. Closer inspection showed some milky spots on my one limb and I didn't want to send that out so I decided to go back to my first love...a nice hickory self bow. Research on my victim led me to believe they would be OK with this. Decided on this one to just leave it as natural as I could...no color dyes, overlays, etc. I'm glad i did. I really like how it turned out. Hope it fits the bill. If not I will gladly build any bow the victim would ask for and I do mean that sincerely. I also decided to go a little crazy and twist up a red white and blue string. I know it doesn't fit the selfbow theme but with all the mess going on right in this nation right now my patriotism is rising up. Nice self bow. Like the way you allowed the bark camo on the back.
-
Well seems that the bow reaper has been on the move and he got me to.
You aren't the only one. I nearly ruined the trade bow yesterday while tapering the limbs on the table saw. The blade grabbed the belly glass and ripped a 1" x 0.100" chunk out. Luckily it was mostly contained to the taper cutoff so I was able to trim it out by making the tapers 1/2" longer. Now I just have to make weight...
-
Dog, I don't do it with the table saw anymore but when I did, I used an abrasive wheel in place of the blade. Never a problem.

I used a 60 tooth blade on the last bow I built and it went without a hitch. Guess I got lucky. Either way I won't be doing that again. I'll pick up an abrasive blade next time I'm at the store, thanks for the tip.
Trad, that's a beautiful bow. Love the natural look!

Shipping is crazy lately. I ordered a tool over a week ago that was to arrive in 2 days. It might arrive tomorrow!! :dunno:
The irony is it was available at HD a few miles away but Shipping was free and promised in two days so why drive to get it? So, HD shipped it from New York which seems odd.
It's this virus thing I guess.

Got the bow shot in. Hit weight and nice shooter. I wanna keep it. I hate letting my babies go! She's got some character, 58.5" NTN, 1.25 wide for half the limbs, semi-Holmegardish narrowed tips, flipped a bit. Osage (of course).

Roy in the swap?
-
Nice bows being made!
I got my plan C bow strung this weekend. Still some work left to reduce weight but coming along nicely. I like the curly maple veneers.
-
Sam, that looks great!
Chris, I would try piking and even then I think your recipient would be ok with a few pounds under versus having you start over. But your call in the end...
As for my update, after more thinking and talking with David @ Thunderbird, I think there's an even better chance I've messed up the finish by cleaning my gun out with regular lacquer thinner instead of the TB solvent and leaving some in the gun. In this case, I went to start spraying and the pattern wasn't great. So I poured my finish back into the beaker and re-cleaned the gun with lacquer thinner and then put the finish back in and sprayed without giving it time to dry out or rinsing with the TB solvent.
Later today I'll sand off the offending coat of finish and get the bow prepped to re-spray. But I think I'll also wait until the end of the week when the new filter/mist separator/regulator shows up so that just in case it is something getting into the airline I don't have to start refinishing all over a third time.
Apologies to my recipient for making you wait a little longer...

USPS Tracking says delivery on Monday.

Got the bow piked and we are back in limits for weight. Had the (dis)pleasure of visiting my local archery shop/indoor range for a string and a new spool of B55. Guy starts off the conversation by telling me, "That's not a longbow, that's a reflex/deflex [sic] bow!" Just give me the string there bud...
Edit: Grammar
-
Heck I love to shoot a Deflex/Reflex bow and I guess I don't like real longbows!
-
Heck I love to shoot a Deflex/Reflex bow and I guess I don't like real longbows!
They have their place...
Most shops I visit have no idea what the difference between and R/D and a more traditional longbow style even are. They only know they don't have wheels. I'd consider yourself lucky to have a shop that is at least a little enlightened...
-
USPS Tracking says delivery on Monday.
Awesome!!!
-
Dang, 6 days since anyone posted anything on this thread and there are still bows to be finished and delivered yet. We (and myself included at the front of the line) are kind of sucking at this!
TradBowyer shipped his bow over a week ago, so that should have arrived, looking for pics!
Sacret mt said his was scheduled for delivery yesterday, should be more pics!
John Scifres said his was ready to ship, hopefully it has and will also be showing up any day, hour, minute. And then more pics!
Which leaves EvilDogBeast who sounded close, ztontonz who was getting close with plan C, and your's truly who just wanted to make those two feel better about being late but is closing in on the finish line. I don't see this going past the grace period which is something given all that has gone on this year, but I'll knock on wood after saying that. :banghead:
That means we're either 69 or 77% shipped, and 54 but close to 77% received and complete.
Anyhow, personal update for my poor victim: The filter/mist separator arrived on Friday. I got it installed, but the weekend went sideways on me. Last night I got the old finish finally sanded completely off the bow, and just moments ago I got it re-sprayed with clean air and hopefully no solvent contamination. We'll see when it dries, but so far it looks promising. If this doesn't work, I may just buy a bow and ship it...
-
If this doesn't work, I may just buy a bow and ship it...
Or now that I think about it, I can always sand it back down and ship it to you unfinished along with a fresh quart of TBird. I hear DIY kits are popular gifts these days...
-
I just checked my mail. Nothing for me
-
Did some progress last weekend. Rough shsped handle and tips. Lost a couple more pounds on the limbs. It needs mostly touch up and sanding before I can spray the bow
-
That one is looking good so far.
-
1st coat looked good. 2nd coat on this morning. Won't be long and I can ink it up and put the final coat on. [knock on wood...]
-
Inked it up and 3rd coat this morning, I'm in my happy place. I expect this bow to be in the mail by Monday at the latest. Will need to twist up a final string and put the shelf and strike plate on, plus I like to give it a couple days for the finish to more fully cure before putting in a shipping box. And I'll be honest, I kind of want to show it off to a couple of friends on Saturday before I never see it again.
*****
And because no one else is writing much here, I'll tell my story: Two years ago at ETAR I bought my first ThunderBird in gloss. I liked gloss finishes. Last summer I finally bought a satin kit but didn't use it until I did a couple of bows at Christmas, and even then in my rush I didn't think about the solids that make it different from gloss settling out. I didn't think to stir/shake sufficiently and was surprised to find the finish on those two bows looked identical to the gloss finishes prior. I haven't tried satin since until today.
Now I've always been frustrated with my finishes on bows, and I know some of that is that gloss shows all the imperfections. Sometimes I get it good enough (still not perfect), and sometimes I go all in and wet sand and then polish it to perfection. But as you can imagine, I hate finishing bows. What is super pleasurable up to that point becomes a challenge to keep motivated to get across the finish line as my recipient now knows.
I had two coats of gloss down on the bow and gave it a light sanding with 320 to take a couple little fish-eyes and a touch of orange peel off before the final coat. I inked it up and went to mix the finish only to find that the solids in the bottom of Part B were like a rock. I finally got it all free and had this giant ball of goo that I could never imagine dissolving. I got ahold of David and he assured me that was normal if I left it on the shelf for awhile, and to stir/shake it long enough and it would be good to go. (Part A wasn't too bad.) He was right and I was off to the races.
Now the bow is still hanging, and I won't know for sure how close to perfect it is until I can grab ahold of it and roll it around in the light, but dang does satin go on easier and more flawlessly. I expected it to be less likely to show any flaws, but it seems that the solids in it changes the way it lays down and it skins over/partially drys much faster so that I finally understand what is meant in the instructions about multiple very thin coats in quick succession.
Anyhow, I'm a bit slow to the party sometimes, but now I know why almost every bow I see (even from custom bowyers) is satin and not gloss. Sigh.
:banghead:
-
I have everything all shaped out and will be shooting in and finish sanding tomorrow. I am hoping to ship on Monday as well.
I am a big fan of a gloss finish as well. In my opinion it brings out the beauty in whatever you are coating much better than satin or matte and seems more durable. The only reason I don't use it on bows now is because I know no one else likes it.
-
Dave, you can polish that satin with some xtra fine steel wool a it will smooth it up and take out any imperfections. I rub mine aggressively with a micro fiber towel after I get done with steel wool.

Good to know. I'll know when I fondle it in the morning, but so far it doesn't look like there are any imperfections. That said, full sun may change my thinking and out will come the steel wool. When you say extra fine, is that 0000?
-
Yes, 0000 is what I use.
-
I have a bow!! Not sure how long it's been here. It got put in my shipping/receiving box in front of shop and no note in mailbox as usual. Found it today since I'm not at the day job...
Will be back when I get some pics, raining a bit this morn...
-
Could ja hurry it up some :bigsmyl:
-
Still rainin , maybe tomorrow
-
Dear *********,
I shot your bow tonight. It’s fast. I underestimated how stiff an arrow I would need, but got there eventually. It seems pretty smooth and quiet given i didn’t put any silencers on and I was shooting lighter arrows. It has a bit of a purple glow to the riser, not sure why or what wood it is but folks seem to like it so hopefully you do too. If not, I’ll pay return shipping.
I’ll get it boxed up this weekend and in the mail on Monday. Maybe a pic or two tomorrow too. I got some of Kenny’s rain over here at the moment.
-
Well I got 30 arrows through her yesterday before work. Picked it up to string it yesterday and noticed this spot on the shelf that needed some more shaping... 2 hours and several pieces of sandpaper later I realized I had better start shooting  You can't finish sand before you shoot it in! Off to the garage with me then.

Nice tailgate bow there

Ok finally time to play a few minutes . This thing is silent as a mouse fart!!
I have spoken to Tsosie and If memory works I believe this is a hickory selfbow double shelf with a touch of backset . Very nicely done and shoots better than I can I think.

Thank you Dave for running this show .

That is a nice one Kenny.
-
That is a purty selfbow!!!
Nicely done
I had to look up “backset”. Pretty much the same as reflexed. Correct?
Kenny must be scared to shoot lefty. I see an arrow in the right hand pic, but not in the left. Don’t worry Kenny. I’m right there with ya. I couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn left handed. Even if I was standing inside. :biglaugh:
-
Nice bows being made and received. Can’t be many left now?
-
Dear ********, your bow was shipped today.

Now I still don't know what the riser wood is, it had no no real purple to it until the finish hit it, and now it does this cool thing where straight on it still looks more red/brown, but at an angle it gets real purple. A bit different, I hope you don't have anything against purple...

Very nice bow David. The wood could be Jarrah, maybe.
-
Nice bows being shipped.
I will be in the swap next year
-
Grain filling and finish sanding today, should be able to start spraying tomorrow!
-
Unless I missed something, TradBowyer's bow should have been received by now. Looking for a recipient to post... That would put us at 69% complete and 77% shipped with a week and half to go to the end of the grace period. Fingers crossed everyone makes it!
-
Very nice bow Dave!
-
Nice bows guys!
I have been really busy last week moving into a new place. Finally resumed making Dust Sunday. Still have to work on the tiller some more. The handle almost ready for grain feeler coat
-
Looks awesome Sam.
I got confirmation that TradBowyer's bow has been received and pictures should be coming shortly.
I'm not sure how Priority shipping on Monday shows an expected delivery of Friday, but if you're my victim keep your eyes open Friday! If you haven't received a bow yet, I know you have at least a 25% chance of getting one this week, and if John was able to ship you have a 50% chance!
-
My victim's bow arrived at the distribution center in their state at 2:25 this morning. Still doesn't show delivery until tomorrow though...so close but so far.
Just a gentle reminder for the few remaining -- grace period to ship ends on July 5th. Since that is a Sunday, preceded by 4th of July and a federal holiday on the 3rd, if you're going to ship before the end of the grace period you'll have to drop it off by July 2nd. Progress has been looking good though, so I can easily see everyone shipping by early next week.
-
Someone got a bow today
-
I hope they post more info soon...
-
Had a little scare when saw the box but it was all good. USPS was rough on it. It's storming tonight, I'll try to get some pics and shoot it some tomorrow evening. It's a beautiful bow!

Holy carp!!!! Glad the contents are ok.

A new marketing slogan:
"PVC, because shipping people just don't give a crap."
-
Unfortunately, some bows don’t fit well in pvc.

Unfortunately, some bows don’t fit well in pvc.
When you shipped the kid bow to me in the 2018 swap it was packed with a wood surround inside the cardboard box. Picture
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Did you make that or ???? I haven't reused it yet but the time will come.
-
No, I didn't make one of those this time. :banghead: (I also sometimes just put in two pieces of 1/4 plywood cut to the shape of the box and make a bow sandwich, which seems pretty secure.)
I actually thought about it this time right as I was about to tape up the box. But you know, I never seem to see a professional bowyer ship in anything except cardboard, and I've never had any problems, and this box seemed pretty sturdy, and ...
... I guess I just got a little complacent. At least it doesn't seem like there was any harm to the contents based on his post, so I guess it's a cheap reminder not to take handling for granted.
-
I finally got pics of the beautiful bow Dave built for me. To start off the craftsmanship and finish work are top notch. All the corners are rounded over nicely, no sanding marks and perfect fades on the tips and overlays. I shot it some in the short time I had before dark. Seems similar to my one piece recurve for speed. I discovered that I can't bare finger fast flight strings like I can dacron, I didn't have time to dig out my archery box to find my shooting gloves. I might twist up a dacron string for it because I don't care for the feel of fast flight. The grip fits my hand like a glove and is the type of grip I prefer. I love the woods its made out of, the pics don't do it justice. Thanks Dave for the building it for me! I would've been proud to have any of the bows built in the swap this year. I see this bow drawing blood this fall!

Glad you like it. I took the sister bow out to 32” on the draw board and it didn’t show any stack. Was still a little nervous until my buddy with a monster wingspan tried it out and fell in love with it. That Kenny M FHLB design is pretty killer.
Let me know what you think of it with Dacron, haven’t tried it.
-
That is a good lookin Bow...Form looks good too
-
I put a couple coats of feeler this week. I really like the way it makes the wood pop.
Today I shot the first coat of gloss. Should be ready to ship next week

What kind of feeler :bigsmyl: you using. Looks good

SWEET!!

Looking great Mr Z. :) :)

WoW..!! I am impressed with all the bows y'all are building this year... Great job guys...

This is what I am using as feeler. A friend introduced me to this stuff. You really don’t need a lot and it cures in minutes in the sunlight.
Second coat of gloss tonight.
-
Thanks. It does make the wood pop.
-
Wow, Solarez. I thought they only made surfboard repair resin.

I may have to try some of that

Just a quick update, sanding my little heart out! It's always "just a little more and it'll be perfect" right? Spraying tomorrow and on track for mailing this week. Pictures when I don't think it's still too ugly (later today).

Sweet looking riser

I put the last coat of finish on last night. I got the leather rest cut and fitted. Still have to decide on the dye color for it and twist a string
-
Nice color combo there Z
-
Chris, the more I look at that riser pic, the more I like it. Good job on the sanding... Look forward to seeing it with some finish on it.
Someone is going to get lucky with these last few bows. Looks like we are heading for everything shipped before the end of the grace period! Not bad for a crazy COVID year.
-
Thanks for the kind words guys. Makes me feel better about the bow as I'm not exactly happy with it. This bow will ship with a standing offer to replace if my victim isn't happy with it.
-
Final coat of sealer. Spraying tomorrow.

I have shipped as well

Sam, does that bow have a black fiberglass core?
And what material is the dark red?
No it’s not fiberglass. I wasn’t happy with one lamination and ended up replacing it with a veneers (that was too dark to make for a nice veneer).
The red is 1/16 phenolic from Kenny

Thanks, unfortunately it's just a loaner

Seems like percentages are the way to go, so:
92% shipped with 2 days until the grace period deadline
77% complete/received
If you are one of the 3 people who have not received a bow, you have a 66.7% chance of receiving a pretty awesome bow in the next week.
-
I'm shipping today. Just waiting on the mailman to bring me the last accessories so I can dress her up properly! Pictures in about 4 hours.
-
The last few waiting for bows should be getting excited. Some nice ones getting sent off to finish off the year.

Confirmation received that the last bow has shipped!!! Three very nice bows are in the mail and I expect pictures at full draw of all three sometime next week.
Thanks to everyone for their hard work getting bows shipped on time (most) and before the end of the grace period (a few of us.) It’s awesome not to have these swaps drag into the fall, and there were definitely some challenges to overcome this year.

Well done by all those involved in the swap this year. :clapper:
This may be the finest collection of swap bows. Y’all went out of your way this year. :notworthy:

Great job on the bow Tsosie. Kenny that hickory is from Missouri so it has magic in it. Tsosie traded for that stave from me.
-
Someone has a package.
-
Hope it didn't get stolen!

Well i recieved my swap bow from Ztontonz and what a great job he did!
Fits well in hand, well mannered and great workmanship...
46#@28" 58" overall length..
Nice addition to the bow arsenal.
-
Congrats on fine bow!
We have another bow that shows delivered, just need to reach out to the recipient to make sure he got it. And there's another that should be showing up any minute!
Almost there...
-
Nicely done Z
-
I know I got a bow but I'm not home to check out out. I'll post next week.

So that means Z just needs to receive a bow. Any luck?
-
No bow showed up at my door yet
-
Any luck gents?
-
Not on my side. Little address issue :knothead:
-
The wrong address was given to the bowyer for the last bow, it seems like it should be returned before long to John and then we can attempt to remail it again. But in the meantime, it’s hard to get definitive answers from USPS on the status.
-
I know I got a bow but I'm not home to check out out. I'll post next week.
John does owe us some full draw pics of that great bow he got though...
-
I am so frustrated with USPS. I cannot get them to reply or even talk to me. I know this is a jacked up time and we are all struggling but at least update me on my claim. The tracking status hasn't changed in a week. I fear the worst. If it has disappeared into the abyss, I will make good somehow.
In the meantime, thanks to EvilDogBeast for an awesome bow. Too hot to shoot right now but here are some inside pics. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

That last picture is awesome John. I hope you enjoy the bow and it meets your expectations. If you aren't happy with the bow for any reason please let me know and I will replace it.
-
That bow could show up today or _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So the USPS called me, on a Sunday evening (!?), and said that the package is being returned to me. They said it can take up to 2 weeks. It has been over 2 weeks but he assured me it hasn't been lost. The tracking status did change slightly. They added "Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way." We'll see. I'm guessing returning a largish package due to an address error is not high on their Priority (Mail) list. I'll let you know if anything changes.
-
Great to hear it isn't lost! Keep us posted once it gets back.
:clapper:
-
The status of the return hasn't changed still. I am not sure what to do here. I can ship a different bow or we can wait.
The USPS had the nerve to send me this survey request "We want your feedback regarding your case ..." when they haven't even sent the package back. I have no faith left that they would read it, but I'll give them a piece of my mind.
-
I don’t mind waiting a little more.
It’s usps after all :bigsmyl:
-
So "Craig" with the USPS got back to me:
"The item could take up to 6 weeks to get back to you as sender."
Let me know if you'd rather not wait that long.
-
Gotta wonder how USPS can justify six weeks!
-
6 weeks!?!? :o
-
Long live USPS. A while ago I ordered som goods from Lancaster Archery and they advised not to use USPS. I chose Fedex and the goods crossed the Atlantic and was delivered to me in five days.
-
I ordered some string wax, USPS, Tracking shows Accepted 12 days ago at USPS, no more Information :dunno:

I ordered an item from Illinois that was sent to colorado by FedEx and it took ten days!
-
None of the shippers are perfect, but consider how many packages they move every day(or don't move) :)
-
Soooo...guess what just showed up. And the bow is relatively intact :) The packaging looks like an ape has been running it around the country though. I mean they have TRY to bang crap up like they do. I'm going to do a full checkup on the bow and then send it on it's merry way back across the country. I should have just taken the thing there myself with the low cost of flights today. Probably cheaper than the redo :) Although I've seen how the airline baggage (mis)handlers treat stuff too.
-
good
-
At least that was a quick 6 weeks!! :biglaugh:
-
At least that was a quick 6 weeks!! :biglaugh:
Well, it was shipped in June and now we’re in August. 6 weeks about does it.
Glad to hear it made it back largely intact. I recommend the obvious recipient reach out to John to triple check the address before it gets mailed again. Just sayin...
:goldtooth:
-
ztontonz,
can you PM me your address? Thanks.

Does this mean the USPS finally got it back to you?

Or maybe the 3rd post up where I already replied?
Yesterday was a long day...

So, any progress? John, did you get confirmation of the right address? Any word if the bow has been shipped or better yet, DELIVERED???
-
TTT :)
-
Update on my swap bow dave built me. I built a string for it in the off time at elk camp last week. It shoots great! I think I'm gonna hunt with it after I shoot it a bit. Hopefully I can have some luck with it this fall. It would be kind cool to have a swap bow harvest thread. Not sure how many other guys hunt with the bows they receive.
-
You know, I've taken some of my received swap bows hunting over the years, but have yet to launch an arrow at a deer or other large game with one. It's only a matter of time before it happens. I haven't made one my primary bow for a season yet though, maybe that's what's needed... I would love to get one with this bow from Bue.
Would be great to have a bow swap kill thread. Not sure how many there are out there though, perhaps open it up to prior years as well and we might get a few.
-
So did John Scifres bow ever get delivered???
Pictures?
-
I haven’t received the bow yet
-
Daaa yahhhhh munnnnn
-
I've reached out to John for a status update. Will update as soon as I hear something.
-
Someone should have received a bow...
-
Usps tracking says it’s arrived but I haven’t received anything yet. Checked again this morning.
-
Oh my, the fun still hasn't ended. Good luck tracking it down, I'm not sure what kind of force field is trying to keep you from your bow!
-
Maybe the post office has it?

I had 8' LED lights shipped and the drive would not load them for delivery(too long) so I went to the post office and they brought them out.
