Title: The Magic Bow
Post by: Killdeer on April 13, 2008, 12:12:00 PM
Dear Mr. Neaves,

We are all looking for that Magic Bow. It is out there, traveling its circles as we travel ours. I ran into it one year at ATAR. It shot dead center at the target butts, and the next arrow shot a half inch away, and the next an inch. The fellow selling it was manning a booth for a vendor, and this was his personal bow which he was trying to sell. I didn't quite wed to the finger grooves on the Centaur, but it shot well enough to ask the price. A lot of money. I reluctantly left it there, but the Centaur stuck in my mind.

I bought one in the TG classifieds, not a double carbon as the first was, but in my weight range. The grooves did not fit, and I found that I could miss with it. I sold it to a club member, it was #15 in your site's gallery.

I just found another Magic Bow, in New York. I fear that the owner will not part with it until he is in the ground, especially since I so glowingly waxed rhapsodic about it to him. The grooves fit perfectly, and the bow shot every arrow in my quiver to wherever I looked. Embarrassing, when my eye wandered at the last moment of release! It is a double carbon, 58" and it was around 45# at 28".  My fingers had to be pried away from the grip, as they felt so at home there.
It was serial #00146.
I think.
It belongs to Larry Marshall. The stingy curmudgeon. I want one just like that, a pound or two more in draw weight would be fine. You have one just like it in stock? No? GOOD! That gives me time to save up for it. How long is the wait on your bows?

(yaddayaddayadda,)
Kathy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This letter was penned on the cusp of February and March of this year. I had spent the previous two weeks vainly trying to wheedle, strong-arm, sweet-talk and cry a bow away from a curmudgeon whom I had the misfortune to meet in All-bunny, NY. I was fine, having the Magic Bow on the back burner of my brain kept me alert and anticipatory, eagerly perusing the classifieds and eyeballing used bow lists. That all changed when I went bunny hunting.
I met the bow. The scene is an ice-covered flat of ground, with motley clots of archers slipsliding arrows into 3D targets and shattering shafts on a steel plate. I was bombarded with the faces and handshakes of old new friends, folks with whom I had chatted and shared hearts' journeys with yet never seen before, and those whom I was meeting for the first time ever.
Tables nearby were stacked with donated prizes and bows for all to try. I heard a voice. I turned around. There was a table with a bow that glowed black as the pits in Satan's eyes.
I innocently asked, whose Centaur is that? Satan sneered and triumphantly hissed, "That's my bow, go ahead and try it!"
One arrow...hit! Two arrows, dead bear! Three, four, all the arrows in my quiver, ash, aluminum, cedar, all were killers save the last one, where my eye wandered as the fingers slipped the string. It hit where I looked. Not just a few, but all of my arrows, two quivers full. People were watching, I went to put the bow down. My hand hung over the table, immobile as I commanded it to open gently and lay the bow down. It heeded me not, until I drew upon my last wisp of will and used the other hand to pry open my fingers.
Larry leered triumphantly. I had to ask. My offers were spurned. I memorized the serial number.
For two weeks I bargained with the devil, and all that he would offer was paired with parting me from my newly acquired Morrison, (just the riser...just the heart!) No way! The Cheyenne had rekindled my hopes of one day becoming a true archer, and I would not bargain with that dream. Finally, I realized that Larry would never part with the bow that Killdeer loved, and one that he had taken one of the elusive JLMBH bunnies with on that historic hunt.
Front and center:
See the triumphant leer? Look at him...NO! Don't look at his eyes! You don't want to know what's in there!!!  :scared:   Poor bunny.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Killdeer/TG%20Uploads/JLMBH/TheMagicBow.jpg)
Yes, two weeks of pestering and suffering that smug smiling smarmy visage posed next to the noble weapon was all I could stand. I wrote the above note and sent it to Mr. Neaves, my would-be rescuer. I sent him two tracings of my hand, because I am compulsive and the first tracing was of my hand which had only been washed twice, so i washed it some more and retraced it. I also sent him a sizeable check to show how brave and earnest I was. I want curly koa, please, Mr. Neaves.
It will be done in May of '09, he said. Will I live that long? Will he keep his hands out of the bandsaw? I have grown old enough to know that a lot can happen in a year and however many months that is. It would be worth the wait and the expense to be able to thumb my nose at the devil and his temptation, though. I would sleep well and wait, knowing that waiting, self denial and the overcoming of whim and wistfulness builds character and nobility.
Beer break. Tea my aching aspidistra!
Two weeks...a letter, a deposit, a dream, a plan.
Enter the dragon. I get a PM from my tormentor, who will never get my Morrison riser that fits me like a glove and took TWO bunnies that weekend, informing me that he was perhaps sortov maybe thinking of perusing the possibilities of and contemplating placing his Centaur in the classifieds.
"I think I may put the centaur up for sale..." it started,  and finished thusly, "if you've got any interest I'll give you first shot...or I'd take xxx.00 and your cheyenne riser."
Well, not capitalizing the name Cheyenne immediately told me the depth of disrespect he held not only for the bow, but the bowyer, me and the entire Cheyenne Nation. That made up my mind in an instant. I played hard to get, and put my foot down immediately.
"'Course I want it.
No, I won't trade my riser."
This resounding reply registered as a tinny whine, translating in his mind to "She pouted, arms folded, and stamped her little foot." so he tried again. I countered.
"So, when do you think you may be listing said bow?
(rummaging through pockets and finding lint.)
Gotta get to bed, it is an hour past my bedtime but I was up late waiting for PMs.
Did I mention how much cheaper this would have been if you had stopped sitting on that bow  before  I sent Jim 200 bucks and  two  handprints???    :bigsmyl:
David, from the dictionary:
1 : variegated in color
2 : composed of diverse often incongruous elements
Now, tell me, thinking back on the collection of camo, blaze orange, tan, blinding white, plaid and yes, ickyicky pink, do you still consider "motley" to be a term af disparagement?
Oy, I write for such as these?
"Killy...I've owned a couple "magic" bows....of course they were the ones I kept in my hands 5-6 hrs EVERYDAY! "
Rod, I know that the more one practices, the luckier one gets, and you can shoot a smiley face on the end of that one!
If I shot these bows that much my arms would fall off! I hate stopping, but my shoulders start to hurt in the AC joints, and my muscles weaken and let the whole set-up collapse.
I had a lucky day. And a magic bow!
Larry, nothing lasts forever. Not bows, not magic, and certainly not your hair.  :p  That is one reason that Jim is making me another bow.
Kathy, You really scared me there for a moment. I thought the Morrison was gone forever!   :scared:
So I must ask, what is to become of the discarded Morrison riser? You have thrown it to the wolves for the devil. (Momma always said those Centaurs were the devil)I see the tears slowly trickling down the riser onto the ground. The relationship could never be the same. The bond has been broken. It will never shoot straight again(for you anyways). No self respecting Morrison will ever sit on a peg second to anyone! So I must declare that since you have taken the magic out of the Morrison for the intruder from NY, it could never be yours again. The mojo is gone! You must ship your Morrison back to Ohio whence it came and we will try to restore it's "magic" And only then, when the magic is restored, will we think of returning it to defeat the devil at his own game. I will await the arrival of your dear,departed friend. Regards.
A true Morrison magic man
"That Riser."
"I have never had indiscreet disrelationships with That Riser, Morrison Cheyenne, nor have I ever had indiscreet disrelationships, with any Riser, while I have been serving in my posts here that the Administrators have not pulled."
That Riser, he calls her. There she sat on the Stock Bows page like a sad-eyed puppy, a queen in a slave market, a thoroughbred amongst the draft horses. I took her in, fed and loved her, bought her the finest limbs. Once paired, she sang, warbling merrily through the woods and mountains, secure in her place in the world.
Discarded? Like some used trollop on the side of the road? Sent luggageless out of state to Lord knows what fate? What rough hands? What questionable purposes?
Nay, sirrah, I say thee nay! I can no more squeeze the magic from the heart of a bow than I can squeeze money from a stone, or pity from a government agency. Nor would I have the callousness of conscience, nor the thorny heart to try.
She is going to the woods today, also. Along with a certain BBO, and a Fox Maverick. And the bow that let magic flow up my arm like silken sleeve, to infuse my heart with joy, and to show me what famed marksmen of old saw when they loosed their lightning'd bolts from risers long turned to dust. For it is the honest truth that a bow's magic can never be drained, nor can one remove magic from a bow through force or deceit. The magic is part and parcel the bow, which, in finding a kindred spirit, allows the magic to bubble forth as clear cold water burbles from out a joyful and exuberant spring.
Indeed, that mighty foursome and I will be laughing in the trees, leaving ill-conceived ideas of lost innocence and schemes of acquisition far behind us in the haze of a dimming computer screensaver.
I must say here publicly, as the mistress of the trees has spoken. I bow down to the godess as killdeer has once again put me in my place.   :notworthy:  The great "riser" we speak of will not have to sit second chair but merely make room for another at it's side. May they become as one like no other and shoot like twins. Names mean nothing except to classify one. Only the magic can sing like the songbird on the mistresses trees. Goodbye is not the words we utter but say "welcome" to the new comer. Great godess cast out the devil in the newcomer and bring out it's magic you once knew on that snowy day in NY.
One day I can only wish to have found the "magic" bow and enjoy the journey that it will take to find it.
I will say goodbye to "the riser" and wish it many happy trips to the trees with it's new found friend, Mr. Centaur.
Cheers!
Mike       :goldtooth:
I must say this has been fun. I must go for now for I have received the great tag from the postal gods. "You have a package" from Bob Morrison. Tomorrow my new Morrison will meet it's new owner and I too can only hope it's "My magic bow".
BTW- If I go to the post office tomorrow and my new Morrison is gone, I have to take a road trip to Fibber McGees Closet, Va.    :D
As Brent Rudolph is wont to say, "I have no idea what he just said, but he sure writes purty."
I gotta go shop for boots...chest waders, I think oughta do it. Hope you have your camera charged and an empty memory card in it. You will love your new bow, ya lucky skunk!
I don't know, I think Larry might have been framed.  Killkeer seems smart -- like supernatural smart -- too smart if you ask me.
And it's kinda spooky how her fingers seem to CHANGE the grips of every bow she picks up.
Glad I'm safe here in Wyoming and shooting a bent broomstick with a piece of rope for a bowstring.  "Nothing to see here, move along!"
Keep the writing coming Killdeer, I've been enjoying it since I started lurking on this site.
Great read and I love the banter!
Thanks for allowing us to sneak a peek into a magical world that only few can see or understand... without good meds.
Me thinks that Fibbers McGees closet might be filled with.... white coats with tricky belts and buckles attached..lol
God bless,Mudd
Larry, have you been licking hogwire around Woodstock again? I look at the rack, and there The Magic Bow hangs, sharing a hook with my Koa creation, Ember.
The poor dear. Much like poor Gollum, he is.
Svein, thank you!
Fact is, I have gotten the new bow, and another as well.
And I still have The Magic Bow.
Then came Larry again, groveling in the classifieds. You ever see those velvet paintings of matadors and Elvises and hobos and sad-eyed children and puppies? (I have one of hoboes roasting sad-eyed Elvis children for poker-playing puppies.    :)   )
Anyway, here comes Larry the waif, raggedy bow in hand, looking like a velvet puppy in a shopping mall puppy-mill window, whimpering for any member of a small spectrum of Centaurs. Well, wouldn't you know it, The Magic Bow sat squarely within the specs he was looking for.
What to do, what to do...   :rolleyes:
Well I sent a PM to Larry and offered my Shrew,my Widow,my wife,my incxome tax return. All he could do was laugh and say fine offers but not fine enough. Whats it take to get a Magic Centaur??? Killdeer, if you have have the Magic bow look into Larrys eyes. It would be eaiser to talk Larry out of it than you.
Kathy,
You must realize that I gave Larry the whereabouts of another  to his specs before the thought of the magic bow once again became his dream. I can only think that is was not purty enough for him. I hope it was the right decision or it could be a lonely xmas watching his add.
Oh, I caught that the first time.
Actually, until I got a clue that Larry did indeed really truly want The Magic Bow for real and always, I figured that it would stay here. I enjoy it for target, stumps, 3D and light hunting, but its draw weight is a bit under what I like for large game. This drawback (sorry!) does not extend to Larry's use, as he has longer arms and can utilize the bow's potential. My short draw limits the thump.
I have shot this bow many places, and have made some awesome hits with it. I love its smoothness, the fit of the grip, the snap of the limbs, and its uncanny knack of hitting whatever it was that caught my eye at release. But I have not brought game home with it. I am holding it back. I have had my own Centaur made for me... and am contemplating others! O faithless, wanton, me.    :o
Larry has taken more critters than I can relate here with The Magic Bow. I think his hand has been achingly empty since he mailed it to me. It is time for it to go home.
But if he ever sells it again, and does not ask me first, he is dead meat walking.   :readit:
I expect notification from any potential buyer if Larry the Curmudgeon ever makes the slightest gesture toward transfer of The Magic Bow from his custodianship.
That's what Family is for!    :readit:
Kathy and Larry,
      As soon as it is done I will post some pics of  two centaurs that would not be possible if it was not for one of our great family members. We need some new pics on this site as most have been deleted. As such the "Bluegoose" and the new "Mexican Blackbird" who is still in the germinal stage will show up in January. tom
Way to go Killy!  She is a beauty.  I too have a magic bow.  It was on the shelf at the Scheels store in Des Moines.  A 58" Kota Prairie Fire.  I have never shot a bow so well.  Just did not have the bank, then she was gone.  Glad you have yours!
Killy ,    :clapper:     , perchance would I build thee a magic bow only to read thy pen.
Enamoured I would be of a book of prose penned  by your enchanted hand.
Suffice it to say that I enjoy your wit and  skill with the written word. You stroke with words as Michangelo with brush scenes that meander within the soul and cause to explore with great anticipation of that which is not yet seen,neither anticipated.
Greatness lies within your heart awaiting the strike upon the key and the indelible timelessness of the written word.
It was good too!!! Merry Christmas , Steve
Ya know killdeer your not the only one that was wanting that magic bow when Larry had it in the first place LOL In fact after shooting her I now own a Centaur since somebody  sweet talked Larry out of said bow before I could   :saywhat:
If I recall that sweet talk may have involved knee caps but that coulda been another my memory sometimes mmmmmmm   :biglaugh:
Maybe I'll hold her again in Feb,my own is now in full dress and looks as purdy as she shoots I may get another someday
