Looking good Kenny. What kind of wood is it?
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: kennym on January 10, 2020, 03:36:30 PM
Its gonna be an all Zebra with amber boo cores.

He said just build it whatever I wanted. The veneers have a white bughole thru them about the size of a pencil lead. So I sanded them full of dust and put a drop of superglue on them before final sanding. Lookin good!

And Roy don't want a GLASS bow! That's fer rogues and pierats… :)

Kenny is this a trad guy?  If not, I bet he will be.  That zebra will be pretty.  Your 64"?
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: kennym on January 10, 2020, 05:26:22 PM
He is a selfbow guy, said he has built 127 of em but he is over it and I let him shoot a FHLB and he wants one just like it but one piece and not painted black. LOL

So it's gonna be a 58" FHLB , he says he shot the other one better than any bow he has tried... Hope this one is as good !

BTW he has a 29" draw and no stack or pinch...

The grain pattern on that wood is like some art or a Rorschach image. Thats going to make a exceptional looking bow for your buddy. Lucky guy

Rough profiled and strung. Looks pretty good , tiller off a quarter and 8 lb heavy. That’ll work!

Prifile looks nice, will you sand belly glass?
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: kennym on January 13, 2020, 11:45:08 AM
May have to sand glass a little , think belly is better than back?  About 4 lb heavy now after working on tiller. I could trap it a little...

Veneer looks great. I usually sand belly glass if needed, I believe most do.
I usually map limbs at brace and at 20 inches draw to see if limbs are bending the same. I draw the profile on a long piece of paper and then flip the bow over to see if the lines correspond. I believe it helps both limbs slam home at the same time and eliminate hand shock, vibration and noice.
This is my square head approach, which works sometimes. :)

Yes Bue limb timing.

I’m with you on timing but don’t folks trap the back to gain speed ?

Also been told it makes no diff where you trap... :)
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: Buemaker on January 13, 2020, 03:07:48 PM
I have not tried trapping glass limbs so don’t know if speed gain is achieved.
I think Black Widow does it, at least they used to.
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: kennym on January 13, 2020, 08:39:20 PM
I don't have any notes on that, but think BW does the back.
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: Crooked Stic on January 14, 2020, 07:17:36 AM
I only really trapped two bows. Did them both with a file. (I would screw up big time with power tools  :nono:)
Dont know either about performance. I did it for weight loss on the front. I do find that about 4 light passes on each corner with a spindle sander and then even up with a flat block will get about 3-4 lbs. off.
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: Carpdaddy on January 14, 2020, 07:33:39 AM
I have shot a Black Widow with the limbs trapped on back, don’t know about speed though. Did it on one bow using a file hoping to lose a few pounds, didn’t help as much as I had hoped it would. Sorry but no solid data in it, looking good!
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: monterey on January 14, 2020, 11:48:00 AM
Breakdown or set in ASLs is the result of tension of the back overcoming the compressive resistance of the belly.  Some ASL Bowyers trap the back to defend against set.

Started putting overlays on but haven’t made it far. Here are the limbs under glass and what I’m gonna use as final overlays . Got some black glass under em ...

Yup on limb timing, I achieve my equal limb timing making the trees pull rope follow the black vertical line on the tree/wall.

https://youtu.be/cf7CnshkW7I

Equal limb timing makes a smooth, quiet, no hand shock, accurate, fast bow.

I trap back and belly edges of limbs.

Looks real nice, Kenny.

Grip overlay glued on . Shaping and sight window next …

NOTE :  When you do a grip overlay like this one, note the relief cut on grip center. Easier to get good fit cause it flexes a bit. Don't cut deep enough to get in grip throat!!

Also when you sand your glass for the overlay, use a curved block, it'll surprise you how bumpy the glass surface is from the lams and riser! If you smooth it out with a block the overlay can be shaped on a disc sander pretty easily...

And if you take a piece of 2x6 and cut out the riser hump and lay the bow in it you have a flat surface for your clamps to go on.

Yup on limb timing, I achieve my equal limb timing making the trees pull rope follow the black vertical line on the tree/wall.

Hey Roy, I made something similar to time my limbs but it didn’t work at all. Do you secure the riser in the timing tree, or is the bow free to tilt from side to side? The problem I had with mine was that I couldn’t even get the bow to sit level before I went to pull the rope. I messed with it for a while and just gave up on it.

May be a little off topic but what are the general dimensions and material you are using for the tip wedges on your FHLB’s?

Nathan
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: kennym on January 17, 2020, 03:50:18 PM
They get the superlam, a .001 taper with wedge built into both ends. The wedge is about 12" one each end to get out past the riser, and you cut part of it off on the tip end so this 58" has about 6.5" wedge in it and longer bows have more at tips

Ok , 2 lb over after trapping the back. Final sanding will get at least one of em so may be one over. It should make him happy.

Looking great Kenny!  What numbers you get out of chrono on this one?
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: kennym on January 20, 2020, 09:36:53 AM
This one did 178 with a
531 grn arrow ,
49.14 lb at 28" draw
10.81 gpp .

I noticed the arrow tailed way right into the target, and hadn't finished the sight window, it will do better after I worked on that. (with that arrow anyway)

He draws 29" so that will help it too.

Title: Re: Bow for a buddy
Post by: TradBowyer on January 20, 2020, 04:07:24 PM
Little late to the party on the trapping topic but my testing results are trapping the back has more effect than the belly. Trapping the back allowed me to lose between 5-10lbs (depending on the degree of trap) but not lose much if any performance so in essence made the bow a lot more efficient. So I made it part of my design. Overbuild the bow by 10 lbs, trap down to weight.

Does this one has a superlam built in?

If so I am curious to know how it compares to degressiv lamination in terms of stability.
My experience with the last bow is that I get good speed and smooth draw with the superlam but loose stability
Title: Re: Bow for a buddy>>>------------> DONE
Post by: kennym on January 24, 2020, 06:09:26 PM
Yes it has the S/L , only taper in it, a .001 PI

degressiv lamination  -- not sure what this is?

I haven't noticed any loss of stability.  Possibly if the limbs are very narrow it could twist a bit in the thin part of the S/L. ?

Mike uses the S/L also so maybe he will be along with a theory too.

Title: Re: Bow for a buddy>>>------------> DONE
Post by: Crooked Stic on January 24, 2020, 06:15:31 PM
Built quite a few with SL. No reasonfor stability loss. Still a .001 taper with wedges.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I find the tips move a lot on this design. But that’s probably just the hybrid design. I would like to try it with a bo tuff lam next time and see it it makes a difference.

By degressiv lamination I meant taper. Sorry for my French-glish
