Hey guys. Last summer I took my first stab at making a selfbow from a hickory stave that I had. Unfortunately it only survived a couple hundred shots before popping a big splinter off the back. I've been warned how addicting it is to build these, and even though this one broke I want to try another for a summer project. The only problem is that I don't have a stave, and being away at school doesn't really allow me the time to go cut and split and start drying one. It sounds kind of dirty, but the only thing I can think of right now is buying one. Looking online there are tons of sites with staves for sale, but I'm just not sure whether or not these are trustworthy as far as getting a decent piece of wood. I know there is no guarantee on getting a working bow, but I'd like to make sure I dont end up with something all punky and rotten or something like that. Is there anyone you guys would recommend or have bought from? Thanks for the help!

There are a lot of osage staves on ebay, if you look at when they have been cut many are green, one group have been cut almost a year ago, these are probably still a little green but close to bing workable.

Thanks guys. I'll check those out. Hopefully this summer at the very least I can go cut something and get it split and drying for future use. We'll see.

I've made a couple of those which came out ok. Working a stave just seems more enjoyable to me.
