I know that a fair number have moved south recently, so I just want to let you guys know this event is a very important shoot. You northern and western friends will find it worth the ride to get there. The venue is great, there are lots of vendors, and the course is fun. I didn't learn about it until year 3, but I haven't missed one since. Bring money, because there is lots of gear of all types to be found. This is a must do on my schedule.

Folks, I didn't mean to leave the small children out, OUR FUTURE SHOOTERS, the Cubs.

Cubs, 8 years old and younger, of course shoot free.

ANOTHER FUN CHANGE FOR THIS YEAR:

The Cubs will now have their own "Cubs Range".  Their range is THEIR competitive range for parents to take them through.

The Cub's Range will make a very easily walked area right up from the Sign in Pavilion and completely shaded.

A few of the Targets for these youngsters are a Mosquito ~ Vampire Bat ~ King Cobra ~ Dinosaur........ don't want to give away all the surprises here.  Twelve targets in all and they can shoot them all they want, just like the adults on their range shooting over the weekend.

Check out the "American Traditional Archer" medallion each participating cub will receive when they are signed up.

Folks, speaking about the Cubs Course, here are many Vendors and individuals that have committed donations to help me buy these RINEHART Targets.

Acadian Woods Bows ~ Selway Archery ~ Art by Broughton ~ Bear Archery ~ Black Widow Bow Co.~ Chain Reactions Archery ~ Full Moon Bar BQ, McCalla, AL ~ Golden Rule Bar BQ, Hoover, AL ~ Lancaster Archery ~ Rock Pile Farms ~ 3Rivers Archery ~ Tom Rowan Traditional Archery ~ Northern Mist Longbows ~ St. Joe River Bows ~ Michael & Terri Morgan (a couple that want to help children in our sport)
Thompson Traditional Archery will donate a cubs bow
CD Archery, donating one of their risers along with Dryad Bows, donating limbs for this riser, to be raffled off for this Cubs course.  I'm sure other will also contribute as well.

Folks, as I wrote earlier, there will be some extra divisions added.  A Men's Super Seniors, also a Junior Girls class.

I'm excited to see these youngsters competing, as well as the Junior Girls now having their own class.

The shooting stakes will be a little different, the Women will now go back to the same stake as the Men, Juniors and Youth will have their own Shooting Stake.

The Cubs in the past have had NO stake, with parents using their own discretion.

In all fairness, the Cubs will now have to shoot from a Marker.  Cubs 7 & 8 will have their marker and Cubs 6 years old and younger will have theirs too.

Folks, those who have attended the Howard Hill Classic know I've raffled off many, many bows over the years for the Boy Scout Camp I also use to extend my target course.

I expect this year to be no different and Acadian Woods Bows has already committed one of it's fantastic bows.

NOW, I've got a bow donated to help me cover the cost of the Cubs Targets.

Calvin Smock & Dewayne Martin "CD Archery" along with Mike Westvang with Dryad Bows are collaborating.  CD Archery is donating one their outstanding risers and Mike is putting a pair of his great "Longbow Limbs" on their riser.

As soon as I receive this bow, I'll post pictures.

More exciting new to still come folks!!!

Here's the entrance gate coming into Tannehill State Park.  When first entering the Park, if you're not camping and are staying in a local motel or just live close enough to come every day, there is an entrance fee, BUT, once in the Park I'll give you a Park Pass so you may come and go.

If you are camping in the Park, you'll automatically get your Park Pass.

FYI, Tannehill State Park gets NO FUNDING from the State of Alabama, this is why there is an entrance fee.

In bringing up camping, Tannehill Historical State Park has approximately 300 camping areas for RV's.  There are three camp grounds, all with power & water, with many having sewer hook-up as well.

Post by: T. W. Harris on January 19, 2020, 08:19:31 AM
Folks, let me talk about the competition at this year's Howard Hill Classic.

The HH Classic is a multi-round format event, where your FIRST OR LAST round can win.  There are 1st, 2nd & 3rd place for all divisions.

If you pay to shoot the All Day Fee or SPECIAL Weekend Rates for single or family, you can shoot as many rounds as you can get in.  THE HIGHEST round you turn in counts.

Again, your VERY 1st ROUND will determine if you qualify for the "Championship Shoot-Down", Saturday afternoon.  The top 30 men & 15 women will get to compete.

As I stated earlier, the Men's Senior's, 62 to 69 will have their own Class as well as there is now a Men's Super Seniors Class.  For these two Classes, the Men's Seniors can also compete in the Men's Recurve, Longbow & Self Bow.  The same also goes for the Men's Super Seniors, BUT, the Men's Super Seniors CANNOT compete in the Men's Senior class, 62 to 69.

Anyone that competes in more than one Class will have to pay an extra $20.00, and they can also shoot that Class as much as they like as well.

NOW, SOMETHING COOL FOR THE "CHAMPIONSHIP SHOOT-DOWN" WINNERS!

The 1st Place Winners of both the Men & Women will also have to compete with their 2nd & 3rd Place  Peers for the New Howard Hill Classic "TOP SHOT AWARD".
This should be fun, not only for them, but for everyone watching.

Shown here is what the "TOP SHOT AWARD" looks like, there's also one for the Women's Winner as well. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  :archer2:

Folks, I mentioned earlier the the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Winners will compete against each other for the"TOP SHOT" award.

The past Championship Shoot-Down competition had ONE Winner from the Men & Women and received a Custom Howard Hill longbow.

As you see, there is now THREE from the Men & Women.

What I failed to mention is that the "Championship Shoot-Down" will now have a Cash Award for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Winner for the Men & Women.

The 1st Place for both is $300.00, the 2nd Place for both is $200.00 and the 3rd Place for both is $100.00

Folks, that is $1,200.00 Cash Awards.

These Cash Awards are Sponsored by "Traditional Bowhunter Magazine" & "American Traditional Archer".  Start practicing y'all!!!

Just got the CD Riser from Calvin Smock & Dwayne Martin and the longbow limbs from Mike Westvang at Dryad Bows. :archer2:

This combination is worth approximately $1,200.00 and as I stated earlier, will be raffled off with the proceeds being contributed towards the Cubs Targets.

Rumor has it that Calvin will be at this year's Howard Hill Classic.  Pretty cool if he'd present the winner with the bow.

Kinda hoping that Mike will be here and be with Calvin for this presentation.  Of course I'd like for Dwayne to make it also.

Will post some pics soon.

Folks, some more exciting news about camping at this year's HH Classic.

Every year since I began, there has been a Gem & Jewelry Show at Farley Field the same weekend as the HH Classic.  All the camping hook-ups along the creek, right as you cross the bridge into Farley Field was reserved for them.

NOT THIS YEAR FOLKS!!

They won't be having their event at Tannehill this year, SO, for those of that want to camp along the creek by the newer bathrooms, get here first and and grab a spot.

Folks, a quick survey:

I've been asked to get a few Howard Hill Classic 2020, Long Sleeve Shirts this year.  I have also been asked if there would be an interest in a Hooded Sweatshirt.

If I do the Sweatshirts, I would probably have to have them pre-paid.

YOUR THOUGHTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Here it is folks, the Hatchet that Roy Hall has refurbished.

The head was made by Vaughn Circa between the 1920's & 1950.

The handle is made from Bocote and Roy had the Deer Head engraved on it.

It's valued at $250.00 and I'll be auctioning it off sometime on Saturday.  Time to be announced later.

The proceeds from this hatchet will also go toward the Targets purchased for the Cubs Course. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  :clapper:

I also spoke with Tim's friend, Sean Craig today.  He's donating one of his Youth Bows, resembles an old Bear Kodiak, w/ 48" limbs.  I'll be raffling it off to help with the targets of the New Cubs Course.

Folks, events of all types are closing everywhere, but, with the Howard Hill Classic two and a half months away, shutting it down isn't even a consideration at this time.

I'm hoping by much warmer weather, things will be getting much better.

I hope and pray the other upcoming traditional archery events are still going on and will do very well, after all, we're all in this sport we love together

Let's keep our citizens in all walks of life in our prayers that this will pass quickly and with as little harm as possible.

Back up, trying to be positive folks and trying not to panic.

Again, my plans are still to have the Howard Hill Classic.

I will say one thing: and with all due respect, I will not ask anyone, because some other event CANCELS, to come to my event, bring money saved by not having spent at these events and take the vacation you saved because of them canceling.

There's so much work, planning and anticipation that go into their events, AND, some have already spent money up front for these preparations.

I want everyone to be safe and cautious.

If the Howard Hill Classic doesn't come off and has to be canceled, THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR!!!

Be safe, be smart, take care of yourself & your families and God Bless America.

Now, something pretty cool!

Byron will also be conducting one of his "Shooting Clinics".

Folks, the cost of this is minimal and truly well done, not only if you're just getting into traditional archery, but it also helps get rid of bad habits, even if you've been at it a while.

Y'all can get on his list anytime, between now and Saturday, June 6th, 2020.

Byron's "Shooting Clinic" will be on Saturday, June 6th, 2020, starting at 10:00 AM until 12 Noon.  :archer2:

Folks, with all of us hoping for the best for our country, I'm feel the last thing we all  are concerned about is having fun flinging a few arrows.

That's who we are, Americans caring for other Americans.

With that said, I haven't read here or other places where someone has criticized any organization for canceling their event over the caution of looking out for their archery family member.  NO, all have offered their support.

Again, I'm not planning on canceling the Howard Hill Classic, HOWEVER, anything could happen by May 16th, 2020, my cut off period for making a final decision.

NOW, I am having to make a few necessary early decisions.

Because of the late date to decide to continue with the HH Classic, I've decided to try and keep from spending extra funds

I know I've said I'd like to put out a New Cubs Course, and have already had many to commit to helping me with the funding of these targets.  Because of the late date I might have to order the targets and to possibly cancel, I decided this project can wait until next year.

I have contacted those donors and explained this to them and they have all been extremely understanding and told me to either hold on to the monetary donations or items they donated, OUTSTANDING PEOPLE HERE FOLKS. :clapper:

I also contacted Kerri Doyle with "Traditional Bowhunter Magazine"and explained the situation with her.  If y'all remember "Traditional Bowhunter Magazine" was co-sponsoring the "Championship Shoot Down".  She is good with whatever I decide to do and will work with me for next year.  What a  CLASSY YOUNG LADY Kerri Doyle  is. :clapper:

A couple of other things I'd like to add.  I won't be ordering t-shirts this year, I'd hate to have a box full of dated t's and have to eat the cost on them.

Folks, last but certainly not least. when people compete, we like to try and reap the reward with the reward of placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

This year, because of the uncertainty, I won't be ordering the plaques I've given away for those places.

I DO, HOWEVER, have 1st Place Belt Buckles for each "Division".  SO, everyone will be shooting and trying to kick butt for 1st place only, GOOD LUCK, LOL.

Let me also say, if the Howard Hill Classic goes on, regardless of the turn-out, there WILL be a "Championship Shoot Down" and each 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Winner will receive the $300 ~ $200 ~ $100 Prize.

FOLKS, LET US ALL PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY, and hope the remaining traditional archery events happen for our great Traditional Archery family.

I am thinkin out loud here.

So, I am seeing all these companies that are still open and mitigating the threat of contact and passing this Wuhan Disease.

Thinking there is a way to get a shoot in! We might as well spitball this now because I think this will be here on ground for some time.

We need to enlist guys on all these sites to come up with a program of actions for these while mitigating risks involved.

1. Holding a Shoot:
2. Payment procedures
3. Shooting course (group sizes)
4. Pulling arrows
4. Scoring and card turn-ins
5. Camping
6. Food
7. Vending

If places we frequent all the time on the local economy can still exist and to bisness everyday there must be a good safer way to conduct a shoot. Maybe not today but in a month, two months, fall, next spring.  . . . . You get my meaning here.

My concerns aren't actually about contracting the virus at an event. I'm more concerned with low attendance, or even the fear of people shopping in the close quarters of a vender tent. It takes a lot of money to be able to travel and set up... time off of work at the shop and generally small margins on product. Many events are near break even in a good year.

Having said that, I have tens of thousands of dollars worth of product that I will have to pay for and carry through to next year to sell even if we are able to do a few events.  Many items like the bigger targets just don't ship well UPS.

Hoping...hoping, BigJim

A thought on shoot schedules.  As I read the three phase Federal reopening plan, large public gatherings (more than 50 people) like an archery shoot would not be allowed until phase three.  Assuming states follow the plan and meet all the ‘gate’ criteria, it would take a minimum of six weeks to get to phase three.  Six weeks from today is June 7.  I don’t see how the Classic will fit this schedule.  Alabama may already have the first two weeks of data to begin to move into phase one.  But that would still mean a minimum of four weeks to get to phase three and shoots being allowed.  And that assumes each phase criteria is fully met on time.

Terry, I really like the shoots you have done in the past.  Well organized, safe courses, great vendors.  But I think there is enough data to make the call right now.  Comptons has made the call to cancel their gathering later in June.  I suspect Cloverdale will not be far behind.

Even if the state can get open, Big Jim makes the good point of what will the attendance be.  Makes one wonder if anyone could break even given the current situation.

Think the states are hadlung as they see fit.

Those are guide lines not enforcement Laws.

GA is opening lots today. They will be the test bed for nation really.

Potus is leaving it to states i believe.

Lowes has 200 people in it every time i am in there much as i dont like it. If they can sell lumber we sure as chit can shoot some!

Just a little over two weeks away folks before I'll make the decision as to whether or not to hold the Howard Hill Classic.

I've spoken with those valued friends that have helped me for years and asked them if they felt comfortable in doing this, they all said they're on board.

Now, the only thing i'm waiting on is the State of Alabama's decision whether or not the number of people that can gather for an event outside.  Right now, it's only TEN PEOPLE.

KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED!!
