Title: What is your favorite small game to hunt this time of year, and favorite recipe?
Post by: Hud on December 30, 2019, 10:45:37 PM
I prefer to hunt to hunt rabbits, or birds in season on the east side of the state where it is dryer, colder and conducive to hunting. Time to get another license for 2020.

Work is letting out early today, so I’m loading up my quiver with some small game arrows and heading to state game lands. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make some “buffalo squirrel” to ring in the new year.

Here’s the recipe:

Only small game I’ve hunted thus far is squirrels, and even though I haven’t brought any home, it’s a lot of fun! Our woods is so grown up, I don’t think you could ever hunt rabbits with a bow. If they’re more than 3-5 yards, there’s going to be crap in your way. Gotta go for game up above the brush!

Mine's rabbit. Quarter rabbit and place pieces in a dutch oven and parboil long enough for the meat to fall off the bone. Salt and pepper. Add paste of flour and milk to liquid to make a gravy. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Snowshoes.  But, with our snow and decline of the population one must make due.

Braised deer mouse is fine table fare.  You just need to get more than one..

I find that by the time I've got one quartered for packing out I'm too pooped to cook it.

I prefer rabbit hunting to everything else. Unfortunately rabbit hunting around here hasn't been worth doing for a long time.

My recipe involves a cast iron skillet. Rabbit pieces dredged in flour and fried low and slow in lard until fork tender and golden brown. Salt and pepper to taste.

The little bit of time I get to hunt after the new year with trade shows, I take what I can get! love to do some stumping/squirrel/hog/rabbit hunting this time of the year when I can. I also have friends with great rabbit dogs and love to take the stick bow out with them every now and then although shooting a running rabbit through briars with a blunt is very difficult!

I like the rabbit and squirrel hunting although I haven't done either in a couple years. Usually I would cook them in bacon grease slowly in a cast iron enameled dutch oven. Often I'll do wine reduction with mushrooms . But I like to experiment and try new stuff too.

Any way my wife cooks it.  I learned a long time back not to dictate or complain.

Archery deer season just ended for (most of) Pennsylvania.  It’s time for me to start small game hunting in earnest.  I hope to have a good enough day to make a mixed game pie.  If anyone in the Susquehanna Valley wants to join me, send me a message.
