Title: Roy and Bue’s trilam project.
Post by: Buemaker on December 18, 2019, 09:46:52 AM
Many moons ago, actually it was back in autumn 2015 Roy and I made a trade with bow building materials.
Two Osage slats have been sitting on a shelf until now, so it is about time.
Will make a RD trilam, Osage belly, Jatoba powerlam, Purpleheart center and bamboo back. It is now clamped up. Did it a little different this time by gluing up the Osage, powerlam and Purpleheart and will add the bamboo later.

Wuz the best I had and I wanted you to have it, Bue...

Do you guy's need to use a photo hosting service, or could you load them from your computer?
Title: Re: Roy and Bue’s trilam project.
Post by: Roy from Pa on December 19, 2019, 06:02:55 AM
I load them straight from my pc, But they need to be the proper size so they don't time out when uploading.

But photobucket sucks.

Imgur.com is a good photo transfer app.

So I refer guys who can't seem to get photos right to imgur.com

Bue do you have the app Mspaint in your pc?

Its standard with windows.

Very simple to resize pictures smaller with mspaint.

I do not use Windows so no Mspaint.
How come Tapatalk can be used from IPhone, but not from IPad. The Tapatalk sign is on TG on the iphone, but not on the iPad.

Did a little more today. Roy here a pic of the RD shape. When the blank is 66 inches ttt the tips are 1 inch in front of back of handle.
Forwardhandle, I first flatten the bamboo full width on the jointer, then cut the width roughly to finished bow shape and taper it by hand on the bandsander. About 1/8 inch at center to 1/16 inch at tips.
Bubinga strip that will be cut in several 12-13 inch pieces for glued on handle

I like the power lam idea..

Post by: Buemaker on December 22, 2019, 06:52:14 AM
Bubinga strips 13 inches long 1/8 inches thick to be glued on the Osage belly as handle. I find it easier to get a perfect fit against the belly useing thin flexible strips, instead of one piece of wood. A bit more glueing though

What kind of machine is that the bow is laying on?
Title: Re: Roy and Bue’s trilam project.

Belgian made Robland, combination jointer, planer, router, circular saw and mortiser

Post by: Roy from Pa on December 26, 2019, 12:14:29 PM
What's it weigh, Bue?

Bout 700 pounds?
Title: Re: Roy and Bue’s trilam project.
Post by: wood carver 2 on December 26, 2019, 12:38:53 PM
I’ll bet it weighs at least half a ton. That’s a 12” jointer if I’m not mistaken. I have an old combo machine, 10” jointer, saw and mortiser and I can barely move it. And that’s with the saw table removed.
Dave.

About 1100 pounds, all solid cast iron tables. When I had the house built I made them reinforce the floor where it is located. It has three 3 horsepower motors. A good sturdy machine that has served me well. :)

Starting to look okay, a bit more adjusting to be done. Right limb is bending a bit more than left,or?
Drawn to 26, three more to go.

Bue, that thing looks to have a massive handle. Is that typical on a Tri-lam?
Title: Re: Roy and Bue’s trilam project.
Post by: Buemaker on February 26, 2020, 10:36:26 AM
Flem, the glued on handle is 12 1/2 long. Total thickness including lams is about 1 1/4 and width an inch or slightly less. Fades will be thinned out some. Don’t know what others use, perhaps Roy will chime in.
