Ive been tossing around the idea of gluing up some simple straight limbed longbows in a design similar to a hill but without the glass. My main question is how does hickory backing compare to what i normally see here which is bamboo. What i have as far as a plan is something along the lines of hickory backing, core lam with built in power lam and osage belly with a 14" stiff riser so all will look like a hill. I prefer for the limbs to be narrow and deep but am not sure if this style will work with the materials im considering or if im barkin up the completely wrong tree

Bamboo will be better.
Find someone that sells bamboo tapered thickness and width will be your best bow.

Hickory would be an excellent backing for these bows. It may not give you quite the performance as boo but it is easier to work and IMO way more durable. Sound hickory is almost indestructible and has been a go to wood backing since way back when.

Pat, I gave him a link to bamboo ready to glue up from someone.
I also agree with you on Hickory too.
Good luck with your bow.
what ever you choose we will help you through it.

That sounds like a great combo to me hickory is a very tuff wood and if you could put a lighter mass wood like maple for the core with osage belly you would probably have a good performer !

Is it James, Mark? He's a good source.
