Title: Takedown longbows?
Post by: LJOHNS on April 11, 2008, 09:26:00 AM
I have tried to accuratly shoot longbows for a while but I just never got the hang of it.  I can shoot a recuve much better, more consistent, and more accurate.  The grip feels more natural and the weight of the bow make it more stable.

My question is does the additional weight of a takedown longbow (like a Morrison or Thunderhorn) make it any easier to shoot?  I would love to try to master a longbow again but the good takedowns are pricey.  I think a recurve style grip would make it easier to shoot also?

I have a 62" Woodland Spirit from Hill Country Bows. I can shoot it as good if not better than I can most recurves, it is smooth, fast and pretty. You can look at them on the Tollgate Archerys web site.

I think it is different for the individual shooter.I started out shooting longbows and I can shoot them better then recurves. For me I never really cared for a recurve style grip.I prefer a straight, dish or a mild locator type of grip.I think too with longbows that are not cut to center arrow spine can be more critical to achieve better accuracy.I've shot longbows for so long I believe it is what you get used to shooting. When I try shooitng recurves it takes alittle bit to get myself accustomed to a different sight picture and the grip. But I always come back to shooting longbows,it's just my personal preference and what I enjoy shooting.A recurve style grip on a longbow I would consider to be more of a hybrid.

Yes.  In design, the hybrid bows you mention are closer to recurves than longbows.  Their heavier mass, cut to center risers and even pistol grips if you want them, will make them feel and shoot more like a recurve than a longbow.

Yeah, I am talking about hybrids.  My first traditional bow was a custom hill style longbow.  I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with that thing.
