Any tips for making your release quieter? I can hand my bow with my arrows to someone else and the shot sounds more like a poof than a pow, if that makes sense.
-
Might be a "plucking" or "double clutching" issue. Maybe try a static/dead release if you're not doing that already.
Another possibility is a draw length issue; could be affecting spine resulting in the arrow bouncing off the riser.

Solid release and well spined arrows, sounds good.

Have someone record you. You can check for a bad release (pluck, finger drag, etc.), loss of shoulder tension (forward creep, shortened draw length, etc).
It would also let you check to see if the noise is just a matter of perception.
I always think I have a soft “thump” on the shot....have had my wife and kids try to listen ...they heard nothing...didn’t even know when I shot if they had eyes closed. Long story short, I didn’t believe them, so I had them video tape it. Played it back and could hear nothing. I had about gone crazy trying to quite....what was already silent.

I videoed it last night in the garage but the sound of it hitting the target is also there so it's hard to tell, need to video outside.
As for the arrow tune, with 3 under its shooting bullet holes and if I walk down the string I get a nick low tear. The noise does get louder as I walk down the string.
I think I'm plucking or something, but I purposefully tried changing how I release last night in the garage and the noise always seemed to be there. What is a static or dead release, I'm not familiar with that terminology, I may be doing it but just not sure what it is?

As others have suggested, there might be several causes. Personally, when my release is loud, is because I "actively" opened my fingers to let the string go. A better form is to stop holding the string instead, and let it move your fingers away. See if that works for you.
Hope it helps

Torquing the string

You can do that with almost any bow. It will always sound louder to you when shooting it versus someone else shooting it because it’s so much closer to your ears!!!!

What I want to know is is the other person standing next to you saying it's loud?
I know for a fact when my boys loud..... And if you think it's loud you need for someone else to verify it for you
-
I'll try to get someone to pay attention and tell me. I did have a guy comment on how quiet my bow was the other day and he was shooting right next to me.

A "dead" release means keeping your string hand in place upon release, best combined (I find) with a bit of expansion on the shot... like a slight push forward with your bow arm/shoulder. Still gotta watch for torquing.. meaning not keeping the back of the bow hand parallel with the string. And not "cupping" the fingers.
-
I feel like I torque the string a little with my hook, maybe I need to work on that. When you say cupped, is that just what it sounds like, forming a concave face with my fingers?
-
If you really want to see how bad your release is, watch a youtube video of Rick Welch shooting. He's like a mechanical release!
-
Yes, cupping is like you're describing.

I have had the same problem over the years and I think Terry and others have given you the answer. I have discovered that I am very bad about cupping my hand. May sound a little unorthodox but for me I try to make sure my hook has no tension and the most important thing is that the bone on my wrist points out and not down. This gives you a flat draw hand and not a cupped hand that torques the string. Also you will find that your alignment is much better putting the arrow under your eye instead of off the side of your face. Works for me and might be worth a try.

Just for the record when I say torquing The String, I am not talking about a deep look.
