Title: Problems with my arrow retriever!
Post by: Islandlongbow on April 11, 2008, 03:44:00 AM
My arrow retriever keeps putting dents in my wood arrows, some times it even slobbers on my fletching. Any one else have this problem?   ;)

I don't know what you are complaining about.  My over sized  Cocker, last fall, first tore the feathers off my arrow before he retrieved the pheasant I shot.

Cool dog! I love her spotty tail!
Just keep making arrows. The companionship and fun is worth the wood.

My older Lab Josie has a thing about fletching, she seems to think it doesn't belong on the arrow! When she's retrieving  or finding lost arrows she will carefully strip it off, if I'm not watching her closely.

No problem with my younger lab, a black female named Sunny.  She just loves to retrieve, be it birds, arrows, balls, what have you...

My buddy use to have a lab that could find any arrow he shot. She would sit patiently by his side while he shot until sent to retrieve an errant shot. never lost one that I know of. Of course it wouldn't know a pheasant from an cow, but who cares. He and I both miss that dog!

Geez Jerry, she's getting so big! That is great to get them to retrieve arrows for you...
But if you wanted and arrow retriever, I know Frank would'nt mind me flying out to help   :D

Besides Cara needs to teach me the hula and check out some of that surf.

I don't see a problem at all!  You have a beautiful companion there and I'm sure she just loves helping you get your arrows.

yeah mine stops half way back plops down and proceeds to rip every inch of feather off the arrow.  Then goes for the plastic nock and doesnt stop till that is a thousand little pieces in my yard.

I envy you the dog... I came to the very difficult decsion that I shouldn't get another... I'm too old and my wife might well be left with it.   However, I will comment that the dog has done its part... the rest is up to you if you want this partnership to work... you obviously need to go to alum/or carbon arrows and vanes...

A small price to pay, for the affection of such a beautiful animal.

For those whose "arrow retreivers" have an affinity for chewing up your fletching, a quick spray with "Bitter Apple" treatment, which is available a most pet stores, and vet's will keep most dogs from chewing them up. (this didn't work for my Chessie. . . he'd eat anything.   :( )

Didn't lose any shafts with him around though!

I am training my Brit to find them now. Being a bird dog, Im leary to let her retrieve them as she cannot help but eat/chew feathers. She is great at finding the missed shots though...

He's a lab/healer mix about a year old named Maka'ala ...Vigilant. I've decided I don't mind a few teeth marks and I think the dog slobber acutually makes my arrows fly straighter   :bigsmyl:

Lucky we have a lot of room to roam

Mine leaves dents also and sometimes pulls off feathers. She put a hole in my buddy's carbon the other day.
She actually seems to like the taste of Bitterapple (she is a Chessie too)
Haven't lost an arrow with her around though.

jdeck,

Gotta love them 'Chessies. As hardheaded as all get out, but they will work till they drop for you.

Two of mine seem to have liked the taste of bitter apple. Like I said, hardheaded!   :)

Jerry,
When I was a kid, I had a yellow lab that would retrieve carp after I shot them with a solid glass fish arrow.  No need for a reel and line.  What a cool sight to see when he'd come back to shore with a fish hanging from the arrow.  No dents in the glass arrow either.
