I will not be heading out this weekend. My proficiency isn't where I need it. Post up your success and stories.
-
Good luck! I have 2 more weeks to wait!!!!

Heading out this morning for my 49th opener. Where did the time go? Good luck to all. 68 inch black locust straight ender, woodies , zwickeys and winona camo. Is this Trad enough?lol Got to love it!
-
May even give a squirrel a try with a bodkin.
-
What's really sad is that WI is the cradle of modern bowhunting, and as of last year 70% of the deer taken during bow season were with crossbows. Keep at it men..
-
Good Luck, Charlie!!!
Shoot straight Brother!!!
-
Good luck to everyone and be safe out there! Ill be taking along my new Holm Made Osprey! I have seen a few nice velvet bucks back in August.
-
Anyone make it out last weekend? Full moon, cold front... What did you see?
-
Made it out Sat and Sunday. Four sit's total. Saw deer every time. I passed on a small 8pt. opening morning, and some does w/fawns the other times. I'm in S.W. Shawano Co. never needed the Thermocell. It felt great to be back out there. I'm going to let this warm, humid air run get over with, should be back there middle of next week. Good luck to all.

I spent some time last weekend moving some stands. I will be up close and personal. I will need to be very still while sitting. I will not see as many deer but I will get shooting for sure if I don't mess up. Not a lot of options for this spot but I feel the stand location will work well.
I set up near here last year. This photo was taken in the rain an hour after hanging the stand. I have adjusted my position by 35 yards into more of a pinch. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Nice pics, Charlie! I sure hope they show up when you're on watch :archer2:
-
Good luck Charlie! I hope you get a crack at one of the great bucks!
-
Anyone making it out? I put a stalk on a young doe. Closed 60 yards, was about 30 when a guy cutting firewood spooked her.
Saw 3 different young bucks tonight on my way home chasing
-
I'll be in the woods up in Presque Isle Thurs through Sunday. Can't wait. My first hunt of the season...my dad's already up there, not hunting anymore, but still loves deer camp and my pics and stories of what I see on stand

At least you'll miss the snow. Looks like we should have a good weekend up here.

Good luck wissler
-
Good luck Charlie. Those are some good looking bucks.
-
I think it has begun!
6, maybe 7 different bucks seen this morning, infusing a couple of passed shot opportunities. Plus a bunch of doe /fawns. A great morning to be in a tree!
-
Hey Joe, sounds like a great morning in the stand. Tonight I seen 2 bucks on public land. The second I could hear tearing up a tree and grunting. I think I detected a pattern and know where to sit next time. Only a 50 yard adjustment
-
I got this guy Saturday morning.

He was only about five yards away at the shot. He was approaching head on and would pass by on the left of the ladder stand. I shot him slightly angling on. He took a couple fast steps and then stopped and stood there for a few seconds before running away. But he only got 25 yds.
This is where he stopped.

Every once in a while you don't have to track them and that is a good thing.
-
I spent the rest of the playing butcher and with a little bit of daylight left I sat down on the deck and had a cold one to enjoy a gorgeous sunset.
-
Less than a minute after I sat down from taking the sunset pic this little spike showed up.

And then he came even closer.

Congratulations Gregory! Nice deer!
-
Nice buck and a great shot Greg! Congratulations!
-
Congratulations Greg! I love it when they fall in sight. Bucks tend to know when you've punched your tag. I've been trying to shoot a doe and I'm over run with bucks. I've had over 10 bucks in range in the last three evening hunts. Ha!
-
Well done, Greg. I see you've swapped out your Robertson for an ILF on this hunt.
Only downside with shooting a buck in October is November can become pretty long unless you can shoot does in your neck of the woods. :bigsmyl:
-
Congrats greg, I saw the same sunset after seeing 2 bucks on public land. It was surreal
Nice buck!
-
Saw 2 bucks this week, they're on the move now! Messed up on a nice 10ptr. last night
-
1st afternoon at bow camp today. Passed up a 3 pt during the first 20 minutes. Saw a doe running all over just before, assumed she was in serious but didn't see any suitors. Saw a nice 2.5 year old but too far for s shot. Saw the 3 point again just before dark.
It sure is nice to be back in camp.
My dad whiffed a nice one at 18 yards. A bit low
-
The next morning I had a button buck at 10 yards. Was thinking about shooting him but the clouds sepeated and lit me up. He gave me the stink eye until outta range. No more deer seen the rest of monday by myself or my dad.
-
The next day was windy as well as monday. Forecast said 5-9 MPH. it was more like 25-30 mph with gusts of 40. Dad saw 3 bucks in the morning. After lunch I went to the stand I saw the button buck in. Brushed it in much better. Was planning on sitting it but the wind changed wasnt right so I moved to a stand we call the dump stand
-
Figured the day was a bust for me for sightings but ended up seeing 5 small bucks and a doe before dark. Most forks and a spike. My little brother made it camp so I was happy about going back and chewing fat by the wood stove. Last night it started snowing heavy and didn't let up till 11 am today.
We slept in
-
This morning we made breakfast and talked about old seasons. I prepped dinner. It's a venison shank recipe that I'd slow cook in the dutch oven while hunting. Put it in the oven at 11. 225 for6 hours. Fall off the bone excellence

Took a picture of it but my cameras pictures ste too big. I guarentee if you tried slow cooking shanks like this you'll never turn them into hamburger again
-
So after the snow stopped at 11, I threw dinner in the oven anfheaded out in the fresh fluff. I was In the stand 15-20 minutes and had a doe and fawn come up from the creek bottom. I think they winded me. This stand is on the the rounded corner of a steep hill. I'm beginning to realize that if the wind is west, north west, or north, it comes past this stand north west and is wrong. The way it funnels through its almost always wrong. Then a while later I saw a doe, I think she may have caught a whiff. A while later I saw a beautiful buck easily Pope and young. He came down the opposing hill and stopped in the creek bottom. He stood there 10 + minutes under an apple tree. After he started walking I snort wheezed but dont think he huh heard me. He stopped in thick cover again so I tried snort wheezing again. Dont think he heard me. When he started walking again I grunted and he took off. Bummer. Saw another doe or two, too far and on the neighbor's property. It started snowing heavily. Just before dark had a small buck chasing does all over. Thought I'd get a shot at one but I think it smelled me. In any event, 10 deer seen nothing close to shoot at. I'll need to rethink this area. Great spot hard to hunt ....

Took a drive around "the block" tonight deer are definitely moving. Tomorrow will be cold NW wind. Not sure what I'll do yet but I'll be out. Thinking of sitting in a mulberry tree in the middle of a corn field .. it'll be boring can only see 15 yards but might have an opportunity.
-
8 degrees this morning. Gonna be a cold one. I am delaying getting to the stand until after light to make my time in stand as effective as possible. No sense getting there an hour before light and be frozen stiff by 7.
-
Dad gum it's cold up there, good luck guys.
-
Sat a total of 7 hours yesterday. It was cold. It was even colder this morning. I accidentally overslept. I am not upset about it. Was starting to run myself down.
Had a good deer at 5 yards. I couldn't get drawn before he took off.. I tried. I dont think he actually seen me. He crossed my scent and was looking for me.
Last night was late getting little bro's deer out of the woods. He has a shoulder injury so guess who gets to drag? Well over 200 lbs dead weight up hill and huffing cold air. I felt I'll by the time I arrived back to camp.
-
Here I am, sitting in a tree, last sit for me before boom boom season. Reflecting on a good season and feeling sorry for myself for not getting as much time as I'd liked.
My little brother set this stand high in a maple tree. It's a good spot, hope to have an opportunity. But if not, I've passed shots this year, I've had chances.
Jumped one just as I was about to climb the ladder. Hope he comes back.

Saw a doe with 2 fawns. I guess I am soft, just couldn't do it. Heard a deer fall through the ice on little Caine creek. After gun season late season hunting is tough. Seldom see anything and when you do they ate cagey as all get out. I have 2 parcels that will not get hunted during gun season hopefully that helps.
-
Good luck Charlie seems like an odd rut year here in MN
-
Stay after them Charlie.
-
Thanks fellas. I'm switching gears this weekend for meat. Usually do not have to resort to other means as meat is typically plentiful free for the taking on the side of the road.
This year there has been very few and the timing has been poor.
I attribute it to the amount of corn still standing resulting in deer not needing to move much to eat.
I'll be at the bow game again soon
-
The past 2 years have been tough for me. I have moved to a new place (from ny) 2 years ago. The opportunity as far as hunting is much better but the move has created new unforeseen challenges that keep me from the woods.
I'm trying to work through these challenges but it certainly makes hunting a little less enjoyable
-
Hang in there Charlie
