I wanted to go up to 50gr. inserts in some 5575s that had glued standard inserts in them. So I put a field tip in and heated it up...carefully so as not to heat it too much or touch the shaft with the flame. I would heat it and try it with some pliers, heat a little more, etc. The shaft cracked. This is just a warning. Next time I will be using hot melt wax for inserts if there is any thought of changing out inserts!

Only heat to use on carbons is hot water, otherwise your in trouble as you have found out. Get yourself a small calibre rifle cleaning rod to tap out inserts no problem. Or as I use a small section of brass rod that fits inside shaft, say 8" long. I just remove knock and drop brass rod in and flick shaft back and forth and it nocks insert out no problem. I use crazy glue or fast set glue provided with shafts and they always come out using this metheod.
Put a metal rod inside the shaft, grab the shaft and snap your wrist down, causing the rod to "jack hammer" the insert out the other end. Two or three "snaps" usually will dislodge the insert. A drill bit will work if you don't have a metal rod the right diameter.

Thanks for the tip guys! I have used a cigarette lighter in the past with OK results-but have damaged a few shafts in the process.
Just be careful using the "jack hammer" method. If you whip the shaft too hard, the insert and the steel rod may come flying out at a high rate of speed...causing a dent in the recroom wall...don't ask me how I know this. :banghead:
I always use hot melt, and just a little heat and the inserts pull right out with no damage to the shaft.
I no longer use super glue.
