Title: more FHLB
Post by: bigbob2 on September 02, 2019, 09:40:44 PM
Some shots here of two bows both in the fhlb design. first one was a monumental stuff up!. Prepared all the lams , did several "dry runs" all in readiness for lay up following morning, when I noticed the tapered lam had a noticeable dish  in one spot. Cut out another lam, ground it parallel and took a break for coffee. Got distracted by phone call, and so forgot to taper grind. Laid the bow up without detecting that issue, obviously came in way heavy with the three parallels. It is black bean riser.Second bow has a riser of Tasmanian Sassafras , red box accent strip and the limb veneers are Black bean heartwood /sapwood.Getting to be a fan too of the green glass. This bow is 45# @ 28'' and 60'ntn. Nice work it looks like you carved it out from a hunk of marble.

Thank Bue. We do have a few nice species.

I was in Australia one time in the early seventies, a few places on the west coast and one place on the east coast. I was a merchant seaman then and did not think much about woods. :)

We have a lot of Acacias , and Eucalyptus, a lot of which are not  so good. Think you would find the country has changed greatly since you were here, and not all good either. Very bad droughts all over country right now. Many cattle farmers are in a bad way, and little sign of any rain

That green glass and your art work looks awesome !! Bob how does the FD look on the three parallels ?

I haven’t done a f/d graph Ritchie. Got to crapped off when I realized my blunder. Came in at 55#. Still draws smooth. Watching your 12” riser model with interest too! I really like the green glass myself.

I meant full draw limb profile does it bend nice ? The green is my favorite, the 12" should be done this month squirrel hunting next couple week ends !

Far as I can tell, it doesn’t feel a whole lot different to one with a tapered lam. I am just loving this design ( with a taper)! I stayed with the belly down form, with air hose and boy it is finicky to get laid up. Been using zip ties but am going to packing tape as well to “snug” it down.

Good looking bow... Like that side view of the riser...

Yeah, unfortunately a bit of the riser is a bit bland, but I think the rest of it compensates a little. Also my lousy photography wouldn’t allow me to highlite the wild grain in the belly veneers

I like the 2nd one.
that white marble look and the belly lams look awesome too.

Thanks for the info Bob I have great interest in trying the three parallel bow your mistake is to my benefit  ;) your brace shot looks good I think Kenny tried one no super/lam and .001 taper but he didn't like the bend maybe the parallel might be the ticket any future shooting reports would be appreciated !

Ok thanks , I made a 64" a while back & missed my draw weight a lot ,like 10lb & double trapped the bow was able to dropped about 6 1/2 lb or there about, I hate it hitting really heavy, I would rather be light you can usually pike  :)

This one was double trapped too , to get it down to 55#!

managed to get this fairly ordinary shot of the bow with all parallels at full draw. I have it at about 29'' in shot which would be about 58#. String angle is very small so could draw heck of a way more in my opinion.what are the thoughts on the profile{ NOT the archer!} of the bow ? [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I got a chance to study you Full draw Bob looks great, I was comparing it to one of my 60"s & one of the 64"s ,to get the aproximate same angle as you & at my 31" draw I have to go to the 64" with carbon which gives it a slightly better string angle ,your 60" has a superior string angle to my 60" with .001 taper ,so the question in my mind does the superior string angle of your bow compensate for the extra mass of the parallels ?? But I have a good idea for a new test bow use a .000 taper super/lam and adjust the stack & narrow the tips like a molly !

So Ritchie, you putting the super lam and a reverse .001 taper in the next one to get the tip wedge and power lam?
Title: Re: more FHLB
Post by: Forwardhandle on September 06, 2019, 06:01:22 PM
I was thinking about setting the S/L sled on top of the .001 taper sled Kenny ,but wasn't sure how much it would effect the wedges ? It sure looks like Bob's has a improved string angle ! I didn't think about a reverse .001 taper  Do you think the double sled set up would work ?

That should work too Ritchie.

Was going for 40#\ 45#, came in at 55# so around 15# above or thereabouts

Post by: Forwardhandle on September 07, 2019, 07:32:43 AM
Wow that's heaver then I thought it would be Thanks !  Have you got a chance to shoot that bow much , how is it ?
Title: Re: more FHLB
Post by: bigbob2 on September 07, 2019, 07:36:52 AM
Probably closer to 10# as I allowed a bit of wriggle room to be able to thin it all down width wise just to see if narrower was beneficial. Apart from not grinding a taper of course ! Lol

Only had dozen or so shots out of it can’t notice any vices Performs well.

Post by: Forwardhandle on September 07, 2019, 07:46:52 AM
Well that's what's good about here when you got a few guys making these you can share info saves time & $$ & aggravation...lol your mistake is my fortune...lol
I would bet your bow has great early draw tension ?  Looks like it moved more stressed working limb lower  in a good way , I think you just came up with the Ausy Rocket Launcher Mate   :bigsmyl:
Title: Re: more FHLB
Post by: bigbob2 on September 07, 2019, 07:52:59 AM
It does have early tension . I should do a force draw graph and check it out. I have learned stuff of your builds too so it is reciprical! The only problem I see with these is using veneers. I have used full length veneers so far, as the tight curve in riser might make it problematic with scarf joined veneers bending around those curved
Title: Re: more FHLB
Post by: Forwardhandle on September 07, 2019, 08:01:24 AM
I haven't used veneers but a bow back I had a lam pop at the scarf line during a dry run so I increased my joint length now I don't think there will be a issue now, when I finish this 58" I will make another with the parallels not much time this time of year I may just order the lams from Kenny so I can get it out faster or have him make me a parallel S/L sled !
Title: Re: more FHLB
Post by: bigbob2 on September 07, 2019, 08:08:15 AM
What do you join them with , CA? I thought with most veneers only being around .0015 there wouldn’t be much surface area in the scarf. My full length veneers are actually just s lam in size ie, say 065 along with couple of ‘boo lams
Title: Re: more FHLB
Post by: Forwardhandle on September 07, 2019, 08:32:23 AM
I don't use veneers Bob , I just make pretty is as pretty does hunting bows , nothing like your art, I was talking about the lams & I do use CA The last couple bows I have just been using 3 lams 2 parallel & 1 .001 S/L less glue lines and easy line up !
Title: Re: more FHLB
Post by: bigbob2 on September 07, 2019, 11:18:49 PM
Yep mine have been 3 lams too.One at back and two on belly side.

Post by: Forwardhandle on September 09, 2019, 04:13:17 PM
With my belly up form I do it opposite of you I do 2 lams back & the super/lam on the belly if I have small imperfections on the riser the 2 lams together snug it up , I'm working on getting the parallel super/lam together hoping to get the short riser glued up this week end !
