Title: Dyed Wood Resource
Post by: J. Holden on September 01, 2019, 09:31:26 PM
Do any of the bowyers here have a place to buy dyed wood?  Maybe maple or elm?  I turn game calls and the only dyed wood I'm finding is the laminated stuff.  It's pretty, just not what I'm looking for.  Also, how about micarta blocks?  Only need 1.5" square by 6"-12" stock.  Thanks!

Big Jim might be able to help.  Google Big Jim Bow Company.

I have some. Haven't had time to stabilize anything new lately. I do however have more than an entire container full of "scrap" ebony and some other stuff.
Scrap to me, but treasure to others.

Quite a few guy's here stabilize and dye their own wood. Might be worth looking into if you are using it often. "Micarta" is about the easiest thing to make yourself, lots of videos on the process.
Best part about making your own raw materials is you are not limited by someone else's creativity.

Thank you for the encouragement.  I did search out Micarta and found some great tutorials on how to make the stuff.  Didn't realize how simple (although messy) it appears to be.  I'll be trying my hand at making my own on the future.  Regarding dying and stabilizing, I'm not in need that often.  So for now I'll stoke the economy and pay for it!
