Title: Splinters lifting on 57" Osage

It looks like spot that I got a little too thin on one edge of the top limb so that it is slightly concave.The splinters are very thin and do not run very deep. I noticed it this morning while shooting. They are more pronounced while strung. Wondering if I could flex the bow and get some thinned titebond or super glue under them then unstring it and put a spring clamp on it? I'm thinking it will need rawhide over it after that for added insurance.

Yeah, looks like you went through the back ring. I think it time for a hickory or boo backing...or set it aside until the pain has lessened.

Couldn't sleep last night so I got up at 2 am and applied a sinew patch to the offending area. Once it is dry I will string it and have a look at it under tension. I plan on rawhide backing it if it looks sound. Cheaper than wasting snake skins over it if it fails. Will post pics in a few days.

Do use deer rawhide or cow rawhide when you back your bows?

I buy my rawhide from Mike Yancey at Pine Hollow Longbows.

Deer or goat rawhide work well. Both are strong but thin. Cow will work but it is thick and must be thinned.

When it's good and dry sand the patch and around the perimeter so it's smoother then do the rawhide over the whole back. I like to put rawhide down in 2 pieces, one piece on each limb with an overlap in the center of the handle.

The rawhide is dry and the patch appears to be holding. I shot a few times yesterday.

Want to stain and seal the rawhide also. Recommendations?

Anything you would use on the bow will work over the rawhide. I use Tru-Oil to seal my bows and it works with rawhide. Sometimes you will get a splotchy affect but I kind of like that for the camo effect. Leather dye, Rit dye in alcohol also works as does acrylic craft paint if you wast to do some graphic design or drawings as does India ink.

I have been shooting this bow to make sure it is going to survive for a while. I weighed it yesterday and it is drawing 49lbs @26". Will keep shooting it as I finish sand. Will go get some stain today, I think it just might make it!
