I caught this critter on a trail camera early last Tuesday. I thought bear cub but the tail is not right. I thought maybe cat but the face is not right.
What do you think it is?

Definitely a bear cub. Looks like he's dragging his left foot behind and "appears" like a tail.
-
Its the extemely rare longtailed bear.An evolutionary throwback that shows itself here and their on a miniscule # of contemporary bears.I have only seen one other one in a rare picture on the cover of National geographic decades ago. That created quite a stir in the scientific community.
Fake news
Machino nailed it.Its the leg blending in and looks like a tail.
-
Looks like a baby chupacabria. RUN!!! :o
-
:scared: That's a wakalar !
Your lucky it's not full grown, but where's the mama? :o
-
Believe that’s his left leg
-
It’s a bear. That’s his left leg.
-
SEE! That's what inbreeding in then hills causes.
What's next?
-
Bear with long stride.
-
Black raccoon
-
Kit
-
Yup. Melanistic raccoon. Rare. Had an uncle that coon hunted a lot, and he had stories of few of black (melanistic) raccoons and a few white (albino) raccoons too.
-
I thought coon but the snout said cub
-
Agree coon.....

That’s a good one Jack! Fun photo :campfire:
-
I agree about the black coon.
-
Even melanistic raccoons have lighter ears, a mask of sort, and faint rings. And I've laid hands on one that I caught in PA a long time ago. You can faintly make out the foot pad on the left leg of the bear. The face looks nothing like a coon as well. But that's like my opinion.

Jack
Is that the only pic?
-
Yep that is the only picture. There are quite a few bears in the area but they have a sixth sense for avoiding cameras and me as well, LOL. I think I am leaning toward a bear cub.
Here is one of the rare pictures of a daylight bear. He is standing in the spot where I shot a deer last fall.

I vote for a bear cub in mid-stride with left leg extended back. But what do I know- I'm from New Jersey?

One more vote for a bear cub in mid stride. It looks like his rear leg to me.
-
I think it is a cub who may be running to keep up with mom who managed to avoid the camera.
-
I think its a bear cub but I dont think its a leg looks like a tail.
-
The body doesn't look to be the right shape either. Looks too humped up, like a coon. The front leg also doesn't look quite right, and certainly doesn't match the thickness of the back leg if that is indeed a leg. That looks like a very awkward position for a leg to be in.
-
Bear kicking dirt over his scat with his hind leg?
-
I think a raccoon when I blow up the photo looks like leg is a tail and it face looks different too just my two cents.
-
Tracey and I say Bear cub shaking its back leg
-
I’m goin with a black kangaroo :biglaugh:
-
To be a bear cub, I think the back leg would have to abnormally long....even then the hip would have to be twisted and it doesn’t look like it, and the other leg would be to short to match (got polio?).
If you blow the pic up...looks like a faint banding pattern on tail (leg?)
-
Its a coonbear hybrid. They interbreed a lot at night by mistake.

That’s one of those white muzzled, white pointy eared, masked bears!
